After obtaining the list of author s publications using from Step 1 to 8 from the Web of Science Basic Level Guide. 2. While viewing the list of author s publications in the Author Search Results window, click on Analyze results 3. In the Results Analysis window, there are various ways to analyze the results depending on the option chosen under the Rank the records by this field column. Page 1

Under the Set display options, if you want the entire list of analyzed results, ensure that the number of results chosen tallies with the number of records to be analyzed and change the default setting of Minimum record count (threshold): to 1 5. In this example, select up to 100 results and set the Minimum record count (threshold): to 1 Determining an Author s collaborators and extent of the collaboration 6. In the Results Analysis window, under the Rank the records by this field column: select Authors. Leave the default as Sort by: Record count and click on Analyze. Page 2

3 7. From the analyzed results, it is possible to determine a list of Prof Yeoh s co-authors. She has collaborated 23 times with Huang S. Page 3

4 Determining the Author s Name Variants 8. Let analyse the results by authors again. Scroll to the top of the page and this time, sort the results by Selected field, click Analyze. 9. Scroll to the bottom of the list of results to Y, and it will display the possible variant names that were retrieved by the search. Determining the Co-Author s Institutions 10. Scroll to the top of the page, under the Rank the record by this field column, scroll down and select Organization. Sort the results by Selected field and click Analyze. This is to gain some insights as to which institutions the author s collaborators are from. Page 4

The following table summarises the options to use for further analysis of the results To find out: Who the author is collaborating with and the frequency of collaboration The author s collaboration in terms of institutions The author s collaboration in terms of geographic distribution Which universities/organizations the collaborators are from The scope of the author s research Use Rank the records by this field: Author name Affiliation name Country Organizations Research areas Saving Analysed Data to Excel 12. The analysed data can be saved for further analysis using Microsoft Excel. By default, only what is displayed on the screen will be saved. To save all the data, select the button for All data rows and click on Save Analysis Data on File Page 5

6 13. At the following window, click the Save button. By default, it will be saved in analyze.txt file. 14. The file can be opened with Microsoft Office Excel. If you have Microsoft Office Excel program installed in the same PC, open Microsoft Excel and click on File Open. Select All Files (*.*) in the dropdown list and browse the file directory and select the File name analyse.txt and click Open. 15. At the Text Import Wizard pop-up window, select Delimited and click Finish. Page 6

7 16. This will display the worksheet containing the data formatted in columns. You may save the file in Excel format by using the Save As function. Analysing the Citing Articles to the Author s Works 17. From the list of citing articles, it is possible to gain some insights into who is citing the author s works, identify possible new collaborations and the impact of the author s works in other disciplines. Determining who are citing the author s works 18. From the Citation Report for the author s works, click on number against the Citing Articles without self-citations, to obtain a list of citing articles by other authors Page 7

8 19. At the Total Citing Articles window, click on Analyze Results 20. Refer to Step 3 to 9, for how to use the Analyse features 21.
