1 States and their nicknames There are 50 states in the USA. Every state has its own symbol and a nickname. Some of these nicknames are on the car licence plates in that state. The nicknames usually come from features of the state, or events in the state s history. Florida, the Sunshine State, for example, gets its nickname from the warm, sunny climate. Hawaii s nickname, the Aloha State, comes from the well-known Hawaiian greeting Aloha! (Hello!) Other state nicknames come from important natural features in that state. Arizona is the Grand Canyon State and West Virginia is the Mountain State. Michigan, in the north of the country, is on the border with Canada. Parts of four of the five Great Lakes in Canada are in Michigan too, and that is the reason for its nickname, the Great Lakes State. Some states get their nicknames from the state s important industries. New Jersey produces a lot of flowers, fruit and vegetables, so it is called the Garden State. Georgia is the Peach State because there are a lot of peach farms there. license plate targa feature (n) caratteristica border confine A peach tree California is the Golden State because there were a lot of gold mines there in the 9 th century. 3 THE LONDON UNDERGROUND In the 80s, the only way to get from London s new main railway stations to the city centre was on foot or horse-drawn cab. London needed to have a faster form of transport, so work began on the London Underground. London was the first city to have an underground transport system. The first line, the Metropolitan Line, opened in 86. A man called Harry Beck designed the original Underground map in 9, and it is still almost exactly the same today. He invented the system of different colours for the different lines. Harry Beck did all this work for very little money. He isn t very well-known. There is only a small notice about his work, at Finchley Central station. Today the London Underground (its nickname is the tube ) covers 408 km of railway, and nearly,000,000 people travel on it every day. There are 2 lines and 275 stations. The Tube has a very interesting history. During the Second World War, lots of Londoners slept in the Underground stations at night, because they used the stations as bomb shelters. The Underground can have a strange atmosphere. Some people say that there are lots of ghosts there. Farringdon Station s famous ghost is -year-old Anne Naylor. She was murdered in 758 in the place where the station is now. 4 4 Exams The High School rom The high school prom in the USA is a formal party at the end of the final school year. High schools can have two proms: a junior prom for students who are finishing their th Grade, and a senior prom for students who are leaving high school. For most students, prom night is a very exciting night. US High school year Students known as: 9 th Grade (age 4 5) Freshman 0 th Grade (age 5 6) Sophomore th Grade (age 6 7) Junior 2 th Grade (age 7 8) Senior The word prom comes from promenade ball, a type of formal dance in the 9 th century. High school proms began in the early 900s. At first they were quite simple events, but with the arrival of the car in the 920s, they became more formal and extravagant. In the 980s, it became an important part of growing up in the USA. On prom night, boys usually wear dinner jackets and bow ties and girls wear ball gowns. The boys often give the girls small bunches of flowers, called corsages. The girls wear these on their arm or their dress. At the prom the students eat, drink and dance. During the evening they choose a Prom King and Queen the most popular boy and girl from the senior year. The Prom King gets a crown, the Queen gets a tiara and they have a special dance together. Traditionally, prom night is a very romantic evening. For this reason, it can be stressful: some students feel they have to find a date for the special night. For seniors, the prom is the last time that they see their school friends before graduation, when they begin their lives as adults. Perhaps this is why the prom is such an important part of teenage life in the USA. Leggi il brano e scegli l alternativa corretta. 5 5 To: From: Subject: My date with Emily! Dear Rob, Help! I m really confused. Yesterday was the most embarrassing day of my life! Did I tell you about Emily? She s a girl in my class and I really like her. Last week I asked her to come out with me and she said yes! I was nervous, but really pleased, too. I arranged to meet her at the cinema at half past three. The first problem was that the bus was late and I got to the cinema at four o clock. Emily was still there, but she was a bit annoyed. Because I was late, there were no more tickets for the new James Bond film. We were both disappointed, but we bought tickets for a different film. It was a war film and it was terrible! We were really bored. We left before the end and we went to a pizzeria instead. We had our pizzas and then it was time to pay. But then I couldn t find my wallet, so I had to borrow money from Emily!
