7 Human Services Department Mission Statement The mission of the Human Services Department is to prepare professionally and culturally competent students who integrate theory and practice in order to effectively deliver human services. The department stresses a flexible, student-centered approach, which includes multiple learning strategies, in meeting the needs of student from diverse backgrounds. Learning opportunities provide student with theoretical knowledge, practical skills, professional attitudes and application of knowledge through experiential learning. Our curricula emphasize advocacy, social justice, empowerment, and a strengths-based approach.

8 Human Services Program The Human Services department offers three majors and a licensure track, within the Alcohol and Drug Counseling program, for student who already have a bachelor s degree who want to become licensed alcohol and drug counselors. 9 Human Services Program Six minors are offered in the Human Services department: Disability Studies Family Studies Gerontology Human Services Administration Training & Adult Development Violence Prevention Student pursuing a BS in Human Services may minor in any Human Services department minor as long as the minor is significantly different from the major. 13 Alcohol and Drug Counseling (BS) Major is designed for students who have a variety of needs and interests related to substance abuse problems., students wanting to qualify for licensure, and those who already have a license and want to complete their undergraduate degree. 15 Some Things to Look Into Human Services Club is a student organization for students with majors, concentrations and minors in Human Services. The purpose of the Human Services club is to support students in deepening their understanding of Human Services as a discipline and profession, as well as providing opportunities for students to get to know one other. Alcohol and Drug Counseling (ADC) Student Association - is a student organization for Alcohol and Drug Counseling students. Monthly meetings are held to provide an opportunity for students to network with other students, learn about academic, licensure and other community resources. Human Services Career Fair Human Services students, faculty, alumni and staff are invited to participate in an annual Human Services Career Fair. Students will have a chance to visit with agencies to discuss internship possibilities or future employment. 16 Understanding Your Degree Requirements The various course and credit requirements for your bachelor s degree were reviewed in the Plan your Program section of the Online New Student Orientation. Admitted students have access to a degree audit or DARS report, showing how transfer and Metropolitan State credits apply to the degree requirements. You can access an interactive DARS report in your student portal. Be sure to check your DARS report regularly to keep track of your progress toward meeting your degree requirements. Be sure to contact your advisor if you have any questions about your DARS report.

19 Registration tips and tools General Education courses may fill early, since they are in high demand. Be proactive about registering when your window opens for these high-demand classes, if you need them. Be sure to refer to the notes section of a course description prior to attempting to register. This is where information about prerequisites, course meeting dates, as well as other important details are listed.
