ONLINE PROGRAM INFORMATION MEETING FOR PSYCHOLOGY MAJORS AND EARLY CHILDHOOD STUDIES MAJORS PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT Created by CHCPS Advising Center February 2013 CPS 47219
What will I learn from this online PIM? My assigned Academic Advisor Components of the BA degree (GELS, Electives/Minor, Major) Psychology Major overview Early Childhood Studies Major overview Degree Planning with Academic Advisor Consortium Agreement Importance of using University account
College of Health, Community and Professional Studies The College of Health, Community and Professional Studies (CHCPS), known for Quality and Innovation through Partnership, and innovation in teaching, advising, research and services, is comprised of the School of Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Human Services, Psychology and Social Work Departments.
Psychology Department Metropolitan State University s psychology program enables students to develop an understanding of the methods and substance of the science of behavior and achieve skills in applying this knowledge in a variety of contexts. The programs is responsive to community and student needs and incorporates a multicultural approach, experiential learning in a community setting. The Psychology Department offers a wide range of courses and other learning opportunities to meet student s needs. These student include those preparing for careers in psychology related fields at the BA level; preparing for graduate study and professional careers in psychology; or pursuing a liberal arts degree with a major in psychology.
The Psychology Department offers two degrees Bachelor of Arts in Psychology Bachelor of Applied Science in Early Childhood Studies The Early Childhood Studies major is offered through the Psychology Department and is designed for individuals working or interested in working in the child care or child development field. This major does not lead to a teaching license. If this is your major you are in the right Program Information Meeting. The Early Childhood Education major is offered through the Urban Teacher Program. This major leads to a MN teacher s license in Early Childhood Education and is designed to train and prepare students to teach in the public school system. If this is your major you are in the wrong Program Information Meeting.
Psychology Department Location Metropolitan State University Midway Campus 1450 Energy Park Drive St. Paul, MN Front Desk: Welcome we look forward to working with you to attain your bachelor s degree!
College of Health, Community and Professional Studies Ann Leja, Interim Dean DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY Faculty Gary Starr, Interim Chair Heidi Frankard (Sabbatical thru Aug.2014) Carmen Cook Kelly Hazel August Hoffman Kerry Kleyman Susan Rydell Glen Spielmans Mark Stasson Caitlin Mahoney Michael Earhart Psychology Dept. Support Staff Michael Goggin
College of Health, Community and Professional Studies Academic Advisors The name of your advisor is listed on your transcript, DARS, and your Portal. If you are not assigned to a faculty advisor you will be assigned to one of the following: Jill Beaulieu-Wilkie: Joseph Flores: Juan Rangel: jill.wilkie@metrostate.edu joseph.flores@metrostate.edu juan.rangel@metrostate.edu If you are not assigned to any advisor contact Adriane Clark, Advising Support Staff: adriane.clark@metrostate.edu or See your academic advisor to: Evaluate transfer credits Review course planning and progress Declaring your major Applying for graduation Receive information about academic support
Degree Planning Once you are admitted to the university and to the program, you may want to set up an appointment with your academic advisor to complete your official degree plan. Your advisor s name should be posted to your student portal, transcript, DARS, and your CHCPS Program admission letter. If you are assigned to a faculty advisor you should contact them to find out when they available to meet with you. Faculty have busy teaching schedules and are especially busy at the beginning of the semester and during finals month. Most faculty are also not available between semesters so you need to plan ahead to schedule a meeting with your faculty advisor.
Transfer Credits Your DARS should show which of your ten General Education & Liberal Arts (GELS) goals were satisfied with your transfer courses. However, your DARS will not reflect which of your transfer courses satisfied your Major requirements until you submit the CHCPS Program Declaration for your major. Many community colleges teach psychology courses that Metropolitan State will accept as equivalent to some of the PSYC upper division courses but these courses will transfer only as lower division courses. Community colleges only teach lower division courses. At Metro State lower division courses have courses numbers and upper division courses have course numbers Example: Century College s PSYC 2043 (Intro to Child Development) will satisfy our PSYC 308 (Child Psychology) but the credits transfer as lower division.
Declaring your Major The university requires new students to declare their major one year from the date they are admitted or by the time they have earned 80 credits. Also, some Colleges or Departments have additional conditions that need to be fulfilled before students can declare their major. However, the Psychology Department does not have any prerequisites for declaring your major so students can declare their major at any time. The CHCPS Undergraduate Program Declaration form can be obtained from this site: Some academic advisors want to meet students about this. Contact your assigned academic advisor to see if you need to meet with him/her to declare your major.
Declaring a Minor Students that need to take more than 20 elective credits to reach the 120 credits for the BA degree have the option of pursuing a minor. What is a minor and is it required? A minor is not required, it is optional. This could be an interest in a discipline outside your major Most minors require the completion of credits The courses for the minor are determined by the department or college Psychology majors cannot minor in any Psychology minor focus area. Students interested in a minor need to submit an Undergraduate Program Declaration form to the appropriate college. All Undergraduate Program Declaration forms can be obtained from this site:

To receive college credit for your work experience you need to get assessed. For more information about this contact Charlotte Nitardy at the Early Childhood Assessment Program. Charlotte can be reached at or at You can also visit the Early Childhood Assessment Center s website for more information.
Academic Expectations Academic Honesty Cheating subject to dismissal from class & the university Plagiarism subject to dismissal from class & the university What is plagiarism? visit Civil Behavior in classroom Student Conduct Code Procedure 112 available at this link: Attendance First two weeks of attendance is critical: faculty can drop students for missing the first two weeks of class.
Registration and Closed Classes High demand classes get full early and most classes start getting full by the middle of the registration cycle each term. Registration strategies The best strategy is to register as soon as your registration window opens. Your registration window is posted your Portal page and on your E-Services page. For closed classes contact the instructor for the class you want to enter to see if they will admit you, or to see if they keep a waiting list and are willing to put you on it. They are not obligated to do either of these, however some do. Keep monitoring (2-3 times a day) the status of the courses you want to enter. It is common for students to adjust their schedules so seats do open up but they fill quickly. Check for openings on the tuition payment deadline when the University drops students from courses because they have not paid their tuition. Take a class at another college using the Consortium Agreement process.
Consortium Agreement Metropolitan State students can take classes at other HOST colleges using the consortium agreement process. Academic Advisors must approve the course selection and sign off on the consortium agreement. Courses taken at Metro State and other schools are factored into financial aid award. Students can obtain the Consortium Agreement form from the Financial Aid Office website: Students need to submit transcripts as soon as grades are posted at the HOST school.
