9 2005 INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE Indiana soccer has been well represented at both the World Cup and the Olympic Games. A former Hoosier appeared in every Olympiad from 1980 to Angelo DiBernardo and Armando Betancourt were the first two Hoosiers to represent their country at the Olympic Games. DiBernardo played for the United States while Armando Betancourt wore the uniform of Honduras at the 1980 games. DiBernardo was joined by Gregg Thompson on the U.S. team in 1984 and John Stollmeyer represented the United States four years later. The 1990s saw Steve Snow suit up for the U.S. in 1992 and Brian Maisonneuve wear the red, white and blue in Maisonneuve proved to be the team s leading scorer in those Olympic Games. Maisonneuve scored a pair of goals for the U.S. Olympic team that finished ninth. Maisonneuve s first goal sealed a vicotry over Tunisia, while the other brought the U.S. to a 1-1 tie with Portugal. A former Indiana player has taken part in three of the last four World Cups. The first Hoosier to compete for a World Cup was Betancourt as he once again represented Honduras in the 1982 World Cup. Stollmeyer competed in the world s largest sporting event for America in 1990, and Juergen Sommer did the same in Sommer would return to the World Cup in 1998, and he would be joined by to two other former Hoosiers, Chad Deering and Maisonneuve. I remember telling both Chad and Brian that I felt they had the sort of special talents to achieve this honor of representing our country at the highest level, former head coach Jerry Yeagley said. Maisonneuve played well in exhibition games leading up to the World Cup which solidified his place on the team. Deering made the team although he had not played in any World Cup qualifiers for the United States Three former Hoosiers are currently listed as U.S. National Team Pool Players. Nick Garcia and Chris Klein from the Kansas City Wizards are members, along with the New England Revolution s Pat Noonan. All three have played for the U.S. National Team in CHRIS KLEIN PAT NOONAN Garcia, the 1999 College Cup Defensive MVP, was also a member of the U.S. U-20 National Team which played in the Junior World Cup in In total, 13 Hoosiers have earned international caps for the U.S. Men s National Team. Stollmeyer leads the way with 31 international caps for a Hoosiers, while Angelo DiBernardo and Klein are tied with three career international goals. The latest Hoosier to make a splash on the international scene for the U.S. National Team is Noonan. The three-time All-American has been a mainstay on the U.S. Roster in 2005, including playing in World Cup Qualifiers. On June 9, Noonan made his first career qualifier start in a 3-0 victory over Panama. He made his first internationl start and scored his first goal, the game-winner, for the U.S. National Team in a 3-0 win over Colombia in Fullerton, Calif. A number of current Hoosiers have enjoyed time with United States National Teams as various levels. A pair of Hoosiers have made appearances in each of the last two FIFA World Youth (Under-20) Championships. Ned Grabavoy, currently of the Los Angeles Galaxy, and Drew Moor, a member of FC Dallas, played with the U-20 National Team at the 2003 World Youth Championships in the United Arab Emirates. At the World Championships, the U-20 team advanced to the quarterfinals for only the second time ever. The team also won its group for the first time ever, won the most matches by any U.S. team in any FIFA Men s World Championship (three), and tied the record for the most goals scored in any FIFA Men s World Championship (nine). Grabavoy played in eight games in 2003 with the U-20 team,, scoring two goals and dishing out three assists. Moor played in 11 matches in 2003 for the U-20 team while making eight starts. Junior Jacob Peterson and freshman Lee Nguyen were both on the U.S. Under-20 National Team to play in the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship in Holland. The team won Group D, the so-called Group of Death, with international powers Argentina and Germany. The U20s also advanced to the Round of
