Open Data Open data is data that can be freely used, re-used and redistributed by anyone subject only to the requirement to attribute and share alike The idea is that public information should be easily accessible to the public online Key components of Open Data Access Availability Distribution Interaction Open API Re-use Source: Open Knowledge Foundation

Technically Open Data Legally Open Data Open Data Technically Open Easy online access to all unrestricted datasets Data catalog with metadata Available for download in multiple formats (CSV, Excel, PDF, JSON, etc.) Provide Open API access to the data Legally Open No restrictions on use and/or redistribution The data must be available under an open license Open Data Commons Attribution License (ODC-BY)
5 What is an API? Application Program Interface, is a set of routines, protocols, and tools for building software applications. The API specifies how software components should interact and provides programmatic access to published datasets using industry-standard methods and procedures API s are essentially the blueprint for datasets

7 Factors influencing the need to provide Open Data Cont d Expectation Prevalence of smart phones and use of social media is creating a more sophisticated end-user who expect data on demand Technology The availability of cloud based data delivery platforms is lowering the cost associated with deploying open data portals and in some instances eliminating the need to build these systems in-house Legislation Federal and State legislation is mandating more free flowing access to data. For example in California S.B.573 among other things would require the creation of a statewide Open Data Portal
