Specialized Admissions Health Careers Most of these programs have specialized admissions requirements in addition to the college s standard admissions process. Some of these requirements are mandated by state or federal legislation. Others are based on the standards set by accreditation agencies. If you have a disability that requires special assistance, your counselor will work with our faculty and the Center for Students with Disabilities to meet your needs.
Objective To inform students who have identified a Health Career discipline as a major emphasizing the specialized admissions procedure and ranking process.
Specialized Admissions Application Process A student s primary major will be declared as an Associate of Arts or a major that is not under a specialized admissions process until official acceptance into their designated health career is received. Students may declare up to two secondary Health Careers majors during an academic year.
Specialized Admissions Application Process The admission criteria will be applied in accordance with the current college catalog. The admission process requires the student to satisfy all general requirements and pre-program specific requirements to include any mandatory course work prior to ranking.

Mandatory Courses Example of mandatory courses in the Nursing program: BIOL 2401 Anatomy and Physiology I BIOL 2402 Anatomy and Physiology II RNSG 1301 Pharmacology MATH 1324 Introductory Mathematics for Business and Social Science or MATH 1314 Pre-calculus I College Algebra and Geometry or Higher level MATH. Note: Mandatory course requirements will vary by program.
Ranking Courses Ranking Courses: are identified by the Health Careers Coordinator are courses within the degree plan that establish the ranking score. may have an expiration date
Ranking Courses require a grade of C or higher cannot be substituted Note: Ranking courses will vary by program.
Ranking Courses Example of ranking courses in the Nursing program. BIOL 2401 BIOL 2402 BIOL 2420 RNSG 1301 Anatomy and Physiology I Anatomy and Physiology II Microorganisms and Disease Pharmacology The ranking of qualified applicants is based on most recent ACCUPLACER test scores and the grades on specific program ranking courses.
Ranking Process Once the specialized admissions requirements have been satisfied, the student will automatically be ranked based on their individual performance on the ACCUPLACER and GPA of program specific ranking courses. Seventy percent (70%) of points come from GPA of ranking courses. Thirty percent (30%) of points are derived from ACCUPLACER scores.
Ranking Process 1200 is the maximum possible ranking score. Cumulative Ranking Points Course Ranking Score 70% = 840 ACCUPLACER Score + 30% = 360 Total Max Ranking Score 100% = 1200
Calculating Your Ranking Course Grade Point Average (GPA) BIOL 2401 A = 4 grade points = 16 points BIOL 2402 B = 3 grade points = 12 points BIOL 2420 B = 3 grade points = 12 points TOTAL=12 credits = 40 points 40 points/12 credits = 3.3 Ranking Course GPA
Calculating the Course Ranking Score (Ranking G.P.A) (Successfully Ranking Credit Hours Completed) (Factor) = Course Ranking Score Example: Ranking GPA= 3.3 Ranking Credit Hours Successfully Completed = 12 Factor = 17.5 (3.3)(12)(17.5) = 693 Note: The factor will vary by program.
Calculating the Factor To determine the Factor for course work, divide 840 by the product of Max GPA and Max Ranking Course hours. 840 / (Max GPA) (Max Ranking Course hours) Example: 840/(4.0 x 12) = 17.5 = Factor
Activity Calculate your GPA using the following data: BIOL 2401 B BIOL 2420 A BIOL 2402 A Calculate your course ranking score. (Ranking G.P.A) (Successfully Ranking Credit Hours Completed) (Factor)
Activity answer Calculate your GPA using the following data: BIOL 2401 B = 12 points BIOL 2420 A = 16 points BIOL 2402 A = 16 points 12 credits / 44 points = 3.6 GPA
Activity Answer Calculate your course ranking score. 44 points/12 credits = 3.6 Course Ranking Score 3.6 X 12 X 17.5 = 756
Ranking Process Now that we have finished computing the Course Ranking Score (70%= 840), we will proceed with the ACCUPLACER Ranking Score (30% = 360).
Calculating the ACCUPLACER Test Factor Thirty percent (30%) of ranking score is based on ACCUPLACER assessment results. Programs will have different weighted percentages in reading, writing and math based upon requirements of the program.
Test Ranking Score Test Factor = (Max total points) (Percentage) (Max raw score) Weighted % Test Area Max Raw Score Formula Test Factor 5% Math 120 (1200)(.05) / 120 =.5 20% Reading 120 (1200)(.20) / 120 = 2 5% Writing 8 (1200)(.05) / 8 = 7.5 Programs will have different weighted percentages based upon academic requirements of the program.
Dental Assisting/Dental Hygiene Diagnostic Medical Sonography Medical Assisting Technology Nursing/Vocational Nursing Surgical Technology Physical Therapist Assistant Weighted % Test Area Max Raw Score Test Factor Ranking Score 10% Math % Reading % Writing % Max Test Score 360
Medical Laboratory Technology Radiology Technology Weighted % Test Area Max Raw Score Test Factor Ranking Score 12% Math % Reading % Writing % Max Test Score 360
Health Information Technology Weighted % Test Area Max Raw Score Test Factor Ranking Score 6% Math % Reading % Writing % Max Test Score 360
Pharmacy Technology Weighted % Test Area Max Raw Score Test Factor Ranking Score 15% Math % Reading % Writing % Max Test Score 360
Radiation Therapy Weighted % Test Area Max Raw Score Test Factor Ranking Score 15% Math % Reading % Writing % Max Test Score 360
Respiratory Technology Weighted % Test Area Max Raw Score Test Factor Ranking Score 10% Math % Reading % Writing % Max Test Score 360
Test Ranking Formula (Test Area Raw Score) (Test Factor) = Test Ranking Score Weighted % Test Area Max Raw Score Test Factor Max Test Rank Score 5% Math % Reading % Writing % Max Test Score 360
Test Ranking Score This is an example for students with test scores less than the maximum possible points. Weighted % Test Area Test Score Test Factor Test Rank Score 10% Math (63) (1) = 63 10% Reading (82) (1) = 82 10% Writing (6) (15) = 90 30% =235
Total Ranking Score Course Ranking Score Test Ranking Score Total Ranking Score
Ranking Once applicants satisfy all Specialized Admissions requirements, including: General Admissions criteria Pre-Program Specific criteria Mandatory course work Applicants will be placed in a qualified pool and will automatically be ranked based upon individual performance on the ACCUPLACER assessment and GPA of program-specific ranking courses.
APPLICANT RESPONSIBILITY Applicants are responsible for: verifying correct status of their application file maintaining compliance with any changing requirements taking effect during the current academic year that effects eligibility working closely with their designated Health Counselor
APPLICANT RESPONSIBILITY adhering to deadlines and/or ranking dates submitting all required documentation prior to ranking deadline verifying official High School transcripts or GED scores have been received by the EPCC Admissions Office
APPLICANT RESPONSIBILITY Applicants will not be ranked if all documentation is not submitted prior to ranking deadline. For instance: Hepatitis B vaccinations series of 3 (can take 4-6 months to complete) Posting ACCUPLACER scores will take between 24 to 48 hours, hence we highly recommend ACCUPLACER test s be completed at least 48 hours prior to ranking date. Background clearance may take several months to process Note: It is highly recommended that you complete all requirements one month prior to the ranking deadline.
Notification of Acceptance Students offered seats into their desired health program will receive a certified letter containing the student Acknowledgement Admissions Form. Students must follow and satisfy all requirements as indicated in the certified letter and return the student Acknowledgement Admissions Form to the Specialized Admissions manager at the VV campus within 10 days.
Notification of Acceptance Students declining or failing to respond to an offer of a seat into a Health Career will be removed from the qualified pool and as an applicant for ranking. A student who has declined acceptance into a specialized program and desires to be considered for other health majors, will be required to submit a change of major form with a health occupation counselor.
Notification of Acceptance After a student accepts a seat in a particular health occupation program, the student will then be removed from all other existing Health Careers pools. Students who were not selected will remain in the qualified pool as long as they continue to satisfy all current specialized and program specific admissions requirements.
Post Specialized Admission Requirements Students are responsible for the following requirements after accepting a seat in the program. Program Orientation Community Wide Orientation - online Specialized Equipment and Lab supplies Liability Insurance Uniforms Required HIPAA - online Substance abuse screening Background clearance CPR Physical Exam Note: This information will vary by program based on pre or post specialized admissions requirements. Check with your designated counselor or Health Careers coordinator.
