1 NURSING About the Profession Nursing Assistants to Practical Nurses to Registered Nurses, provide varying levels of day-today care for patients as they recover from illness or injury, strive to maintain good health or to manage daily living. They assist the patient to optimal wellness, comfort or a peaceful death. Career Options Nurses work in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, home health, surgery centers, flight nursing, clinics, mental health centers, industry, schools or health services agencies. Others choose administration, education or research specialties. Nursing Assistants typically work in hospitals, home care and long-term care facilities. Working conditions Nurses work up to 12-hour shifts in around-theclock schedules. The work can involve lifting and a lot of time on your feet and is demanding but rewarding. Income Potential According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the annual income ranges from $44,970 to $96,630 for RNs, $29,680 to $56,010 for PNs, and 17,790 to $34,580 for Nursing Assistants. Career Advancement In each area of the nursing profession, advancement is possible by receiving additional education and degrees, and through specialization. About the Program The nursing program prepares students to safely and effectively fulfill the roles of caregiver, demonstrating caring, competence and critical thinking. Licensing RN and PN graduates will be eligible to take the national licensure exam for nurses. The programs are approved by the Arizona State Board of Nursing and accredited by the ACEN. The CNA program is also approved by the ASBN. In addition,cnas must meet the requirements of the Arizona Nurse Practice Act, Statutes, Rules and Regulations.

2 Registered Nursing - RN - A.A.S. The Associate of Applied Science in Registered Nursing (RN) is designed to prepare the student for a career as a Registered Nurse. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, the graduate will be prepared to take the national licensure examination for registered nurses. The program is approved by the Arizona State Board of Nursing and accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing. Students wishing to transfer to four-year institutions will have the academic foundation to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with concentrations in nursing including neonatal care, cardiac care, surgical nursing, and advanced programs for nurse practitioners. Note: A majority of students will be required to travel to Las Vegas, Nevada, for a portion of their clinical experience. Students may be required to attend mandatory training/orientation at various clinical sites or the Nursing Department laboratory before the official opening of the summer session. For a course to be eligible for transfer, the student must receive a C or better. Acceptance of a transfer course is determined by the receiving institution. Student must be a graduate of an accredited high school (or hold a GED certificate), be 18 years of age or older, demonstrate evidence of potential success in the community college, and/or be a transfer student in good standing from another college or university. 2. Successful completion (with a C or better) of Fundamentals of Chemistry and a 100-level biology course. Acceptable college courses are: a. BIO Biology Concepts or BIO General Biology (Majors) I or one semester of anatomy and physiology with lab. Students are given the opportunity to, by examination, demonstrate competency in BIO 100. An examination will be available by appointment on each campus site. If competency is not demonstrated, the course must be taken. b. CHM 130 Fundamental Chemistry OR CHM 151 General Chemistry I 3. Application Requirements A completed application must be submitted for admission to the RN nursing program once the prerequisite courses have been completed. Present evidence of two-step tuberculosis testing within the past year. 3. Provide documentation of measles, mumps, rubella immunizations, a varicella titer and flu vaccine during flu season. 4. Provide evidence of HBV vaccination series or declination. 5. Provide documentation of physical examination within the six-month period immediately prior to admission to nursing program demonstrating the student s ability to perform the essential functions of the profession with or without reasonable accommodations. 6. Provide evidence of a negative drug screen. Students gain understanding of physiological, psychological, pathological, and basic nursing care needs of medical surgical patients across the life span, pregnant and post-partum patients, neonates, infants, and children while maintaining a safe environment for patients and their families. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, the graduate receives a certificate of proficiency and is eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nursing (NCLEX-PN). Upon successful passage of the NCLEX-PN, the graduate is eligible to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the state of Arizona. The Practical Nursing program is located on the Neal Campus in Kingman. Requirements for Graduation: Passing all core nursing courses with a C grade or better and an 85% predictability of passing the NCLEX. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, the graduate receives a certificate of proficiency and is eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nursing (NCLEX-PN). Upon successful passage of the NCLEX-PN, the graduate is eligible to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the state of Arizona. The student must also have an acceptable background check and the physical requirements for the course. These institutions offer seamless transfer of most MCC credits and programs to bachelor degree programs.
