6 An online reputation is the publicly held social evaluation of a person based on his or her behavior, what he or she posts, and what others (such as individuals, groups, and Web services) share about the person on the Internet.

People will judge YOU based on what they find online. Once it is posted online, YOU are no longer in control of your content. Digital content stays online forever. YOUR online reputation is a very real permanent record one that reflects every good or bad decision YOU make.

13 Why is YOUR online reputation important? 81% of singles in their 20s have searched their dates A bad online reputation can kill potential jobs, business, or relationships without you ever having the chance to defend yourself. Employers use the thoughts & judgments that you make available to the public as a reflection of what you will do with clients, team members, and them. 17 Take Charge of Your Online Reputation Think about what you want your reputation to be online..start NOW! Use technology to your advantage Monitor and manage your reputation Learn what employers want to see Publish your personal interests (blog, join groups) Create separate accounts for personal/private Own your domain Have multiple profiles that establish your unique persona Create an online portfolio Work together with friends to check your work

18 Use search engines Type your full name into several popular search engines. Search for images as well as text. Search all variations of your name other names you have used, nicknames, or middle name or initial. Include personal domain names (yourname.com) in your search. Search sites you frequent online directories and sites that compile public records, genealogy sites, the websites of organizations to which you belong even your own pages. Search blogs and social networks Review what others have posted about you in comments, pictures, or videos. Explore blogs, personal pages on social networks (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter), or photo-sharing sites like Flickr and Snapfish. Think about the story this information tells. Does it reflect the reputation you want to have? If not, what is missing? Is it accurate? If not, what should be deleted or corrected? Do you need more than one online profile whether professional, personal, or for an area of interest, like a hobby or volunteer work? If so, is it okay to mix info from different profiles? Do you want your profiles to be public or more private?

20 Remember the Ad Council s slogan: Wouldn t wear it? Don t share it! Be proactive. Show the online world your better side. Regularly Bing yourself. Check out your Friends photos. Un-tag yourself in any compromising photos. Don t use technology as a weapon. Really angry? Walk away from the keyboard. Protect your system and information by using genuine software. Create strong passwords, change them often, and don t share them with friends. Steer clear of locker room language and sexting. Don t post compromising photos or videos of yourself or your friends. Don t say negative things about anyone. That includes your school, teachers, or family.
