Subject: RE: Program Revisions for BS Degree in Science Education Date: Friday, February 12, :14 PM From: McConnell, Thomas J <MCCONNELLT@ecu.edu> To: <crawleyf@ecu.edu> Conversation: Program Revisions for BS Degree in Science Education Frank, Preliminary indications from our Undergraduate Curriculum Committee are extremely positive concerning your proposed changes in mathematics for the BS degree in Science Education. It is clear that all in Mathematics consider your proposed changes to be a very positive. I therefore am providing my official endorsement of the proposed changes, and thank you for supporting strong mathematics in education. If I can do anything else, or if you need any other documentation, please let me know and IÕll gladly provide it. Sincerely, Tom McConnell Interim Chair, Department of Mathematics From: Crawley, Frank Sent: Tuesday, February 09, :52 PM To: McConnell, Thomas J Subject: Re: Program Revisions for BS Degree in Science Education Dr. McConnell: It must first complete the curriculum review in the College of Education. To date it has passed review in the Department and in the College. Since it changes requirements for persons seeking degrees to teach, it must first be reviewed by the Council for Teacher Education Curriculum Committee, followed by a review by the full Council for Teacher Education. We will present the program to the CTE-CC on February 17 and, if successful, the entire CTE on March 15. I donõt know when the next meeting date is for the UCC. Frank
From: "McConnell, Thomas J" Date: Mon, 8 Feb :17: To: <crawleyf@ecu.edu> Cc: "Ries, Heather L" <RIESH@ecu.edu>, "Ravi, M. S." <RAVIM@ecu.edu> Subject: RE: Program Revisions for BS Degree in Science Education Dr. Crawley, Thank you for notifying us of these proposed changes. IÕll forward this information to our Undergraduate Curriculum Committee (Heather Ries, chair) and to our UG Math Area Coordinator (Ravi). My thanks to Ron Preston for directing you to us. I am asking our UGC for a recommendation on your proposal. When does this proposal come before the UniversityÕs Curriculum Committee? Thank you for writing to us. Tom From: Crawley, Frank Sent: Monday, February 08, :08 PM To: McConnell, Thomas J Subject: Program Revisions for BS Degree in Science Education Dr. McConnell: The purpose of this is to notify you of program changes we are proposing for students who seek the BS degree in Science Education. We are strengthening our requirements in each of the four science concentrations (Biology, Chemistry, Geology, and Physics). A key part of the changes we are proposing is strengthening the Mathematics requirements for persons seeking concentrations in either Chemistry or Physics. In particular, we propose that persons seeking a concentration in either physics or chemistry be
required to complete Calculus I and II (MATH 2171 and MATH 2172) rather than Calculus for the Life Sciences I and II (MATH 2121 and MATH 2122) as has been required in the past. I hope these changes in requirements in the Chemistry and Physics concentrations meets with your approval and that you will be able to support them. If you have questions, concerns, or need to talk about the changes we are proposing, donõt hesitate to contact me.
Subject: Proposed Curricula Change<BS Degree in Science Education Date: Thursday, March 11, :47 AM From: To: "Row, Kathleen" Conversation: Proposed Curricula Change<BS Degree in Science Education Dear Chairperson Row: Greetings. I ask you to forward this memo of request and notification to the appropriate undergraduate coordinator or committee. As part of a Council for Teacher Education (CTE) mandated curriculum change (as prompted by the State Board of Education or SBE), the science education area in the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Instructional Technology Education has a curriculum proposal working its way through the approval process. This proposal is with respect to the BS degree in Science Education (SCIE). In the past we have required all undergraduate majors in SCIE to complete the Developmental Psychology course PSYC With the changes being proposed we will no longer require completion of PSYC Instead, SCIE majors will now be required to complete a ÒCouncil-for-Teacher-Education-approvedÓ diversity course, selected either from Psychology or Sociology. I have crossed this message to Dr. Vivian Covington, Director of Teacher Education. Does the Department of Psychology support the changes being proposed for the Bachelor of Science Degree in Science Education? It is my understanding that the Department of Psychology is in the process of submitting a course that meets the diversity requirements, namely the PSYC Is this correct? I appreciate your attention to this request.
Subject: Proposed Curricula Change to the BS Degree in Science Education Date: Thursday, March 11, :56 AM From: To: "Wilson, Leon" Cc: "Covington, Vivian" Conversation: Proposed Curricula Change to the BS Degree in Science Education Dear Chairperson Wilson: Greetings. I ask you to forward this memo of request and notification to the appropriate undergraduate coordinator or committee. As part of a Council for Teacher Education (CTE) mandated curriculum change (as prompted by the State Board of Education or SBE), the science education program area in the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Instructional Technology Education has a curriculum proposal working its way through the approval process. This proposal is with respect to the BS degree in Science Education (SCIE). In the past we have not required undergraduate majors in SCIE to complete a course in the Department of Sociology. With the changes being proposed we will require completion of a ÒCouncil-for-Teacher- Education-approvedÓ (CTE-approved) diversity course, selected either from Psychology or Sociology. I have crossed this message to Dr. Vivian Covington, Director of Teacher Education. Does the Department of Sociology support the changes being proposed for the Bachelor of Science Degree in Science Education? Will the Department of Sociology offer a course that meets the CTE-approved diversity requirements? I appreciate your attention to this request.
