FROM THE CHAIR The year to 31 December 2009 saw continued progress in and expansion of CONROD s activity in addressing the economic and social wellness of society with respect to issues arising out of trauma. At year s close an inaugural appointment to the position of CONROD Professor of Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery at the Royal Brisbane and Women s Hospital is imminent. The establishment of this Chair as a joint clinical/research position involving collaboration between Queensland Health and The University of Queensland heralds CONROD s intention to maximize and expand its role as a clinical/research operation for the betterment of Queensland society. CONROD aims to secure additional clinical/research chairs to optimize the treatment of and outcome for persons suffering trauma with a particular emphasis on injuries sustained involving a motor vehicle. During the year, the Queensland Trauma Registry (QTR), a major component of CONROD s Acute Trauma Care Programme, was expanded to include public hospitals at Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Logan and Maryborough. The QTR is now arguably the most comprehensive trauma registry operating in Australia. The operation of Trauma Review Committees under the direction of local clinical directors at each of the 20 hospitals within the QTR should ensure optimal trauma management and outcomes. A perusal of this Annual Report will give evidence to the outstanding performance over the year of the individual programmes. In this regard Professor Justin Kenardy as Deputy Director and Associate Directors Professor Luke Connelly, Professor Elizabeth Kendall and Associate Professor Michele Sterling deserve high commendation for the success of their teams and their own personal achievements. Associate Professor Cliff Pollard and Ms Kathy Harvey also deserve special recognition for their performance making the Queensland Trauma Registry such an important contributor to the improvement of trauma treatment and management. CONROD continues its strong international links with its involvement in the biennial series of fora on disability management and is contributing to the planning for the 5th International Forum on Disability Management scheduled for Los Angeles in September Future fora are scheduled for London in 2012 and Auckland in Additionally, CONROD continues its international activity supporting the publication of the International Journal of Disability Management Research with Professor Nicholas Bellamy the editor, and Professor Elizabeth Kendall, a member of the Editorial Board. CONROD s governance structure was strengthened with the establishment during the year of an Advisory Council. Membership of the Council is comprised of significant persons with a wide range of skills and experience. A major component of CONROD s success and achievement during 2009 was the contribution by its excellent administrative staff of Ms Deb Sunners, Ms Chesne McGrath and Ms Katherine Green and I extend to them my sincere thanks for their effort. I would also extend best wishes to Ms Robyn Clapshaw who left the Centre during the year after a decade with CONROD. Robyn was an excellent and talented employee and her cheerful manner is remembered fondly. In closing, I recognize with gratitude the support of the Queensland Government through the ongoing funding support from the Motor Accident Insurance Commission. Dr Graham Hughes AM Adjunct Professor Chair CONROD As in past years an acknowledgement of the leadership and qualities of the Director, Professor Nicholas Bellamy, should be recorded. Professor Bellamy has presided over and constructed CONROD to be one of the leading and most influential disability management and rehabilitation research centres in Australasia and to him I extend my congratulations and thanks.

2009 CONROD ANNUAL REPORT 3 FROM THE DIRECTOR The last 12 months have been very productive for CONROD. The Centre has successfully implemented the recommendations of two external reviews conducted in In particular, recommendations regarding the Queensland Trauma Registry (QTR) have seen the appointment of Associate Professor Cliff Pollard (Director QTR) and Ms. Kathy Harvey (Manager QTR), expansion of the QTR to encompass 20 Queensland hospitals receiving major trauma cases, the conduct of several research projects and the provision of data to support a large number of quality assurance and research initiatives in Queensland and Queensland Health hospitals. QTR activities have informed both policy development and practice improvement. CONROD has continued, along with others, its involvement in co-contributing to the implementation phase of the Trauma Plan for Queensland through its membership of the Statewide Trauma Clinical Network. Discussions between CONROD, the UQ School of Medicine, the Faculty of Health Sciences, and the Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC) have resulted in CONROD launching a submission to Government for the future funding of CONROD on a rolling-funding basis. CONROD has also been involved in discussions regarding the recruitment of a senior academic to a new Chair to be called the CONROD Professor of Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery. A candidate has been identified and is expected to be appointed, with a commencement date in This position is expected to further enhance trauma research at CONROD and add clinical capacity in trauma service delivery at the Royal Brisbane & Women s Hospital (RBWH). CONROD has continued to support educational activities both within and outside the University. The Centre s Research Higher Degree programme is well subscribed with Masters and/or PhD level students in each of its programmes. CONROD, in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Northern British Columbia has been successful in supporting and progressing a new Journal entitled the International Journal of Disability Management Research, which as of next year will be termed the International Journal of Disability Management. CONROD has been successful in attracting interest in the Journal from the Organising Committee of the International Forum on Disability Management to be held in Los Angeles, U.S.A., September Programmes The Acute Trauma Care Programme is led by Professor Bellamy and is engaged in the development of a major longitudinal study of outcomes in road traffic crash victims, which will explore both process and outcome and the role of compensation systems. The appointment of Associate Professor Pollard and Ms. Harvey has brought considerable clinical and administrative expertise to the QTR. A QTR Advisory Committee and a QTR Research Subcommittee have been convened and have met regularly. The Acute Trauma Care Programme continues to pursue its research agenda, which will be still further enhanced by the impending appointment of the CONROD Professor of Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery. CONROD continues to provide support to the development of The Trauma Registry Consortium (Australia and New Zealand), and a Bi-National Trauma Registry. The Rehabilitation (Medical & Allied Health) Programme has continued its strong development under the leadership of Associate Professor Michele Sterling, successfully securing over $700,000 in external competitive funding in 2009, for a study exploring the development of chronicity in low back pain. Associate Professor Sterling is currently the recipient of a four year NHMRC Career Development Fellowship award. Associate Prof Sterling has developed a fully functional laboratory at RBWH associated with the CCRE initiative in Spine. CONROD s evidence-based whiplash website continues to be extremely popular. The website has received endorsement from the RACGP and other federal authorities. The Rehabilitation Programme has a very active research higher degree programme, with several students being supervised or co-supervised by Associate Professor Sterling. A Review of the American Medical Association Guidelines for the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment was completed for the Queensland Government and has been distributed to MAIC, QComp, Justice in Queensland as well as compensation authorities in other States and overseas. Impairment ratings under the AMA Guidelines are used as one resource in assigning compensation awards.

FROM THE DIRECTOR The Social and Behavioural Sciences Programme under the directorship of Professor Justin Kenardy is currently conducting research projects focusing on the psychological health and wellbeing of adults and children following medical trauma, with particular reference to the areas of whiplash, traumatic brain injury and PTSD. Professor Kenardy was awarded a National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant from the U.S.A. to develop PTSD tools. He was also appointed to the NHMRC Project Grant Review Panel. PhDs have been conferred on two students supervised by Professor Kenardy. During 2009, CONROD s Children s Accident Response website for children and their parents proved popular, and provides a much needed resource in an area of unmet need. The Social and Behavioural Sciences programme, Health Economics and Health Systems programme and the Rehabilitation (Medical & Allied Health) programme continue to actively participate in the CCRE and have extensive collaborations both internal and external to CONROD. The Health Economics and Health Systems (HEHS) Programme operates under the directorship of Professor Luke Connelly. It was a productive year for the Health Economics and Health Systems Programme. In addition to ongoing projects with national competitive funding (totalling approximately $6.7m), two new NHMRC grants and a grant from industry (totalling approximately $930,000) commenced in Staff and students from the Programme were well represented at the International Health Economics Association meeting in Beijing (4 papers), and at the National Australian Health Economics Society (6 papers) and Economics Society meetings in Hobart and Adelaide, respectively, and were also represented in a number of other international and national meetings. 39 2009 CONROD ANNUAL REPORT 37 Programme REPORTS Programme 1 - Acute Trauma Care Programme Report by Professor Nick Bellamy, Associate Professor Cliff Pollard, Dr. Fumiko Irie, Ms. Jacelle Lang and Ms. Kathy Harvey The Acute Trauma Care Programme focuses on all aspects of injury management from the time of injury through to discharge from acute care health services. This programme was developed to incorporate and expand upon the role of the Queensland Trauma Registry by being multi-disciplinary and multi-speciality in nature, crossing boundaries between pre-hospital and in-hospital arenas. The goal of the Acute Trauma Care Programme is to enable improved trauma care by facilitating quality improvement and practice change and informing policy and legislation. Specifically, the programme aims to: \\ Provide a state-wide evidence base of serious trauma \\ Optimise the standard of trauma care provided throughout Queensland \\ Identify innovative, cost-effective and integrated trauma care services \\ Identify the factors that impact on recovery and resumption of usual lifestyle of injured individuals \\ Benchmark trauma care nationally and internationally through the National Trauma Registry Consortium (Australia and New Zealand) More specifically, the objectives of the Queensland Trauma Registry are a focus for the Acute Trauma Care Programme and include: \\ Determining the incidence, cause, location, explanatory variables, treatment and outcomes of serious injury in Queensland \\ Establishing benchmarks and identifying variations in accepted standards of care for people who experience serious injury in Queensland \\ Facilitating clinical review and making recommendations for changes in trauma management throughout Queensland \\ Conducting scientific research to reduce future incidence and burden of injury and improving trauma management and outcomes The Queensland Trauma Registry (QTR) component of the Acute Trauma Care Programme underwent an external review in 2008, initiated by Queensland Health and performed by KPMG, as part of due process for considering CONROD s funding submission for the QTR. The recommendations of the KPMG review were very favourable for CONROD, which was able to achieve several of its key QTR objectives. In particular, with substantial support from MAIC, funding has been confirmed by Queensland Health to support the QTR operation for the period 1 July June This has facilitated the appointment of a QTR Director from the trauma surgery environment and a QTR Manager, with high-level clinical service improvement experience from Queensland Health Corporate Office. This role has supported the core QTR operation, and considerably assisted CONROD in strategically planning QTR activities that can inform and influence policy and practice development at state, hospital and health professional levels. A new QTR Advisory Board was established which closely aligns QTR s activities with the goals of the Statewide Trauma Clinical Network and the Queensland Trauma Plan. The first meeting of the Advisory Board occurred in February, with a second meeting taking place in October. The Advisory Board established a new Research Subcommittee, which held its first meeting in August. The KPMG review also recommended expansion of the QTR to Logan, Bundaberg and Hervey Bay Hospitals, an expansion that CONROD has been striving to achieve for several years. All three hospitals came on stream as QTR sites in CONROD will remain a School Centre within the School of Medicine for the foreseeable future. This decision has had positive consequences, one of which has been the availability to CONROD of accumulated Research Quantum funds for the period. These funds are being used to support, together with clinical sessions from RBWH, a new Professorial level appointment in the Faculty. The new Chair will be called the CONROD Professor of Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery. The clinical component will be located at RBWH and the research component at CONROD. A position description and announcement were prepared and advertised. The appointment of the CONROD Professor of Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery is a key component of further enhancing the Acute Trauma Care Programme and bringing

Programme REPORTS another high level academic clinician into the CONROD environment. It is anticipated that this appointment will result in additional opportunities for CONROD to shape policy and practice and successfully compete in competitive research grant competitions at the national level. The appointment will also expand orthopaedic surgical capacity at RBWH. The Queensland Trauma Registry has been fully operational in 20 sites across Queensland during These sites include Bundaberg, Caboolture, Cairns, Gold Coast and Robina, Hervey Bay and Maryborough, Ipswich, Logan, Mackay, Mount Isa, Nambour, Princess Alexandra, Redcliffe, Rockhampton, Royal Brisbane & Women s, Toowoomba and Townsville Hospitals. In addition, two paediatric sites of Mater Children s and Royal Children s are operational. QTR data were used to inform the development of A Trauma Plan for Queensland (2006), and subsequently the establishment of four Major Trauma Services at the Princess Alexandra, Royal Brisbane & Women s, and Townsville Hospitals, and a Statewide Paediatric Trauma Service (2008). In 2009, QTR data were used for Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) Trauma Verification processes for the 4 major trauma services. QTR staff data coding skills were kept up to date with a statewide training workshop held in November 2009, which was attended by 28 of the 30 member QTR team (see photo). The 2007 and 2008 QTR Annual Statewide Reports (3) and Site Reports (14/16) were completed in The QTR web site has been reviewed and updated to include publication of all QTR Annual Statewide Reports. These reports provide a summary of demographic, injury, treatment and outcome data and facilitate review of current trauma care as well as planning for future trauma care. At the end of the year, 2009 data collection was well advanced and expected to be completed, along with completion of data quality processes, by mid The University of Queensland previously received prescribed entity status under the Health Services Regulation 2001, legally permitting Queensland Health staff to release confidential patient-identifying information to the QTR for the purposes of evaluating, managing, monitoring and planning health services for trauma patients. These data support trauma audit and quality assurance activities at participating hospitals. Data collected by the Queensland Trauma Registry are also utilised within each of the hospitals in which QTR operates and by other interested parties, including government and university staff. The QTR provides data for activities such as research, education and auditing. Release of data follows strict guidelines and a data request form is required before data are released. During 2009 the QTR successfully responded to 100 data requests from hospital clinicians and external researchers, for application in activities directed at informing policy and practice. Policies and procedures for data collection have been reviewed on an ongoing basis, including upgrades to the Data Collection Manual and implementation of the new edition of ICD-10-AM (6th Edition) for external cause coding, as well as a new edition of Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) coding for all admissions from 1 January, These changes necessitated major upgrades to the QTR database, which also continuing. Adherence to coding classification systems (including ICD- 10-AM and AIS) is reviewed on an annual basis through the procedure of data cleaning. Predefined queries that identify common data entry errors are also included as part of the data cleaning process. These checks, along with annual site audits of subsets of included and excluded cases via dual coding of patient health records by a senior Health Information Manager and ad hoc data quality checks, are performed on a regular basis. Results of these quality assurance processes, as well as results of the coding exercises, inform the training programme which is provided on a continuous basis within the Registry. The training programme is multi-dimensional and includes monthly staff meetings, biannual workshops, a quarterly QTR newsletter and an /telephone help desk for coding assistance. In addition, In November 2009 all QTR Trauma Registry Nurse Coordinators (TRNC) and Health Information Managers who commenced with QTR in the past twelve months, that is those who were not previously accredited in November 2008, were provided with accredited training in AIS 2005 coding. EDIS has now been implemented in each hospital emergency department across Queensland Health, and all QTR staff continue to identify relevant patients through standard reporting. The process of matching QTR cases to discharge diagnoses reports provided by the Health Information services of all QTR hospitals, continues to identify approximately 5 10 per cent of cases who bypass ED or who are not identified through routine screening mechanisms.

2009 CONROD ANNUAL REPORT 39 Programme REPORTS Newsletters continue to be distributed to all TRNCs for the purposes of ensuring they are aware of activities happening throughout QTR, as well as to provide education regarding the coding process. In addition a number of QTR hospital sites publish a local newsletter which is distributed throughout the hospital and associated health care areas and reviews aspects of care related to trauma patients. Trauma Review Activities The trauma review and practice development activities of the QTR are coordinated by the Trauma Review Committees (TRC) operating in most sites. The TRCs meet on a regular (between monthly and quarterly) basis to review cases that have tripped a performance indicator or have been identified as being worthy of review for an additional reason. Regular reports of summary data regarding performance indicators for each hospital are provided to these forums as requested. Recommendations are made, and policies changed that influence trauma care throughout the region. Examples of recommendations and policy changes brought about by the TRC process include: \\ Development/revision of trauma forms to improve documentation \\ Improvement of communication between tertiary and regional hospitals via improved referral information \\ Development of protocols for spinal clearance procedures Staff Development QTR staff have attended relevant conferences, workshops and seminars and have themselves delivered educational and information sessions on site. The biannual workshops in particular concentrate on developing knowledge of coding practices, as well as skills and strategies to effectively implement practice development programmes within each of the QTR hospitals and surrounding health service districts. All QTR staff were supported to attend the Queensland Statewide Trauma Symposium held in Brisbane on 6 November Publications Research manuscripts have been prepared and are being submitted to peer review journals. These include the following: 1. Characteristics and outcomes of injury patients in an Aboriginal and Torres-Strait Islander (ATSI) population - Queensland Trauma Registry, Australia 2. The presence of complications is associated with increased fatal outcomes in middle-aged and elderly trauma patients - Queensland Trauma Registry, Australia 3. The association between pre-hospital/emergency department management and developing complications among trauma patients - Queensland Trauma Registry, Australia Research Acute Trauma Care Programme staff participated in a number of research projects during Longitudinal study of outcomes in road traffic crashes Professor Nicholas Bellamy, Dr. Fumiko Irie and colleagues have advanced the development of a protocol for a prospective longitudinal observational study of trauma outcomes in RTC victims registered by the QTR. The study aims to generate information capable of informing policy and practice in injury management and post injury rehabilitation and provide insight into the functioning of aspects of the Compulsory Third Party (CTP) scheme in Queensland. Characteristics and outcomes following serious traumatic injury in the elderly This study was designed to describe, characterize and compare the differences in injury characteristics and outcomes in the elderly population (aged 65 years and older). This study also aims to identify risk factors for death and discharge placement following hospital discharge. During 2007, ethics applications were prepared and approval was gained from the Princess Alexandra Hospital Human Research Ethics Committee and The University of Queensland Medical Research Ethics Committee. Data from QTR (January 2003 December 2006) have been analysed to examine these aims and a draft manuscript has been produced and distributed to all authors for comment. Data will be sourced from existing road traffic, injury and trauma data collections, including the Queensland Trauma

Programme REPORTS Registry, Queensland Injury Surveillance Unit, Queensland Health Admitted Patient Data Collection, the Queensland Transport Road Crash Database and the Vehicle Registrations Database. The Department of Transport and Main Roads has been approached to extract data relating to road side factors from the free text included in the Road Crash Database. Characteristics and outcomes following injury in the ATSI population Disadvantage and inequality of health in indigenous populations, such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders (ATSI), compared to non-indigenous populations is known to exist, however, injury-related health problems in indigenous people are rarely noted and investigated. This study aims to compare the characteristics and outcomes of injury in an ATSI population to the non-atsi population who are living in Queensland, Australia. Data from the QTR database for the period between 2003 and 2005 were analysed for this project. The analysis, including examining baseline and injury characteristics, injury outcomes (length of stay, number of complications, mortality) which compared the non-atsi and ATSI population has been finished. Further analysis, including the injury leveladjusted odds ratio for the mortality outcomes stratified by age, gender and number of complications also has been completed. A manuscript is now in progress to submit to the appropriate peer-reviewed journal. Impact of complications in trauma patients The development of complications can lead to increased risk of suboptimal outcomes in trauma patients. Complications can also negatively impact on the length of hospital stay and lead to excess medical costs. The aims of this study are: \\ To examine the impact of pre-hospital and emergency department management processes on developing complications in trauma patients and \\ To examine the association between the development of multiple complications and risk of death in different age categories. Statistical analysis has been completed and writing of the manuscript is now in progress. Data from the QTR ( ) was used for this study. Co-morbidity data were included in the analysis and essential statistical analysis has been performed. The study results were presented at the Population Health Conference held in Brisbane, July, The study results were also presented at the CONROD Annual Scientific Meeting in June Predicting the probability of survival following injury for the Queensland population The TRISS (Trauma and Injury Severity Score) method has been the standard way of predicting outcome in trauma patients for many years, however, there are alternative methods that may produce more accurate predictions in the Queensland population. The aim of this project is to tailor the TRISS methodology to a Queensland setting, thus enabling more accurate predictions based on the data collected by the QTR. It is envisaged that more detailed exploration of the QTR data and modelling of TRISS-type algorithms for predicting survival in trauma patients will commence in the New Year. Trauma Tracking Study This collaborative project with the NCCH was designed to determine the outcome of injured patients who survived to hospital discharge three years post injury. The second phase of the Trauma Tracking Study examines 2003 data from all QTR sites. This study will enable investigation of concordance of data coding practices across the entire state and will also facilitate investigation of trends in death across time and across different geographical areas. Approval was sought from the Director-General of Queensland Health to enable linkage of QHPADC data to QTR data. This approval was granted on 12 August, All data linkage is now complete, with QTR data, National Death Index data and Queensland Health morbidity data linked into one file. Kirsten McKenzie presented a paper titled Concordance of Injury and External Cause Data Across Systems: Comparing Trauma Registry, Hospital Morbidity and Mortality Data for Trauma-Related Hospitalisations at the Australasian Mortality Data Interest Group (AMDIG) workshop held at the University of Otago, Wellington, New Zealand on the 2nd and 3rd of December, The paper has been drafted and is currently under review before submission to a peer reviewed journal.

2009 CONROD ANNUAL REPORT 41 Programme REPORTS Traumatic Injury Recovery Study: The management and prediction of early recovery This study, conducted in collaboration with the Centre for Work, Leisure and Community Research at Griffith University, has been funded under the CONROD collaborative grants scheme. It will: \\ Describe the natural progress of early recovery from severe traumatic injury in a population-based sample of adults (18 years of age or older) \\ Document the characteristics of care and rehabilitation received by this sample \\ Identify the determinants of outcome in terms of injury factors, psychosocial variables and early treatment experiences of patients with severe injury Data from the QTR ( ) were used for this study. A manuscript is now in preparation. The study results were presented at the Trauma Melbourne Conference, November \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ This project has two sources of data for each participant: a mail-out questionnaire and Queensland Trauma Registry data. The questionnaire has three points of data collection discharge, 3 months post-discharge and 6 months post-discharge. Data were collected from the Gold Coast Hospital and the Princess Alexandra Hospital. The QTR has provided data for all participants from both hospitals and this constitutes the final sample. Data cleaning has been finalized and multivariate analysis is in progress, with the first reports to be presented shortly. The first publications are to be written up before the new year. Epidemiology of Traumatic Epidural Hematoma in Young Age Epidural hematoma (EDH) is a major traumatic brain injury and a potentially life-threatening condition, with the mortality rate in the young age group varying across studies. The aim of this analysis was to investigate the magnitude of traumatic epidural hematoma in young patients aged 0 to 24 years by presenting data on EDH details, incident environment, treatment received and their outcomes. This project investigates the magnitude of traumatic epidural hematoma on young patients. Since high morbidity is expected, further analysis to evaluate their long-term health outcome via a longitudinal follow-up study is warranted for this young age group. These research aims align with MAIC s objectives to improve the quality of trauma management and to reduce the burden on medical budgets.

Programme REPORTS Programme 2 - REHABILITATION (MEDICAL AND ALLIED HEALTH) Programme Report by Associate Professor Michelle Sterling The Rehabilitation (Medical and Allied Health) Programme appointed three additional full-time staff members in 2009: Ms. Helena Motlagh, Ms. Stephanie Valentin and Ms. Tegwen Howell. Both Ms. Motlagh and Ms. Valentin are involved in the 2 NHMRC and MAIC/ MAA co-funded randomized controlled trials for chronic whiplash via participant recruitment and assessment. An additional PhD scholar, Ms. Tze Siong Ng commenced in 2009 as a remote candidate. Ms. Ng will investigate whiplash in Singapore. The appointment of these new staff now brings the total compliment of staff working on the Rehabilitation (Medical and Allied Health) Programme to nine. The Rehabilitation (Medical and Allied Health) Programme was significantly successful in 2009 with the award of over $700,000 in external competitive funding. Associate Professor Sterling was awarded a NHMRC Project grant in collaboration with Professor Paul Hodges (CCRE: Spine), Dr. Lorimer Moseley (University of Sydney) and Associate Professor Michael Nicholas (University of Sydney) for commencement in 2010 and entitled: Why do people keep hurting their back? The programme also received grants from other bodies including Uniquest, The University of Queensland and the Motor Accident Insurance Commission (Qld). Grants awarded in previous years continued including an ARC Discovery project, two NHMRC project grants and the NHMRC CCRE: Spinal Pain Injury and Health. The Whiplash Evidence Based Website launched in 2008 has continued to be successful. The website was a joint project of CONROD Rehabilitation and Social and Behavioural Science Programmes and CCRE: Spine and aims to provide evidence based information to consumers and health care professionals about whiplash and its management. Since its launch, the website has received a large volume of hits, has been endorsed by the RACGP and is linked to websites of other organizations including MAIC (Qld), MAA (NSW), TAC (Vic), MAC (SA) and Queensland Health. A number of papers were published, accepted for publication or presented at national and international conferences. Members of the Rehabilitation (Medical and Allied Health) Programme presented invited papers at numerous scientific meetings including: UK Private Practitioners Group conference, American Physical Therapy Association conference, International Kinetic Control conference in Edinburgh, Australian Physiotherapy Association conference, Australian Pain Society Annual Meeting, Australian Spine Society Meeting and the Chiropractic and Osteopathic College of Australia conference. Members of the Rehabilitation team were awarded a Best Paper award at the Australian Spine Society conference in Brisbane, Best Poster award at the International Kinetic Control conference in Edinburgh and runner up to Best Paper award at the Australian Pain Society conference. Associate Professor Sterling was a member of the Primary Care Task Force in preparation for the National Pain Summit. The summit will be held in 2010 and aims to bring a higher profile to the management of pain. Other achievements include: Dr. Andy Chien and Dr. Jinny Uthaikup were awarded their PhDs; Dr. James Elliott was awarded a Fresh Science award for new investigators and Associate Professor Sterling was awarded a Fellowship to the Australian College of Physiotherapists. Details of specific projects are as follows: The prediction of outcome following whiplash injury Recent data indicate that up to 60% of people will develop persistent pain and disability following whiplash injury and these people incur the vast majority of costs. These studies funded by the Australian Research Council (Linkage and Discovery grants) aim to identify both physical and psychological factors predictive of poor functional recovery following whiplash injury. This will assist in the provision of early intervention strategies as well as curtail claim costs. The studies are multi-centre in design and include collaborations with universities in Iceland, Canada, USA, Melbourne and Sydney. The ARC Linkage project is now completed with final data analysis underway. Findings from this area of research are now included in current Australian Guidelines for Whiplash Management (Motor Accident Authority -MAA, NSW). To date, six publications have arisen from this work in international journals including Pain, The Clinical Journal of Pain.

2009 CONROD ANNUAL REPORT 43 Programme REPORTS Physical (biological) processes underlying painful musculoskeletal conditions These ongoing studies are being undertaken by Associate Professor Sterling, Dr. Elliott and Mr. Stone in collaboration with Professor Eli Eliav (University Medical and Dental School, New Jersey, USA), Professor Michele Curatolo (The University of Bern, Switzerland), Professor Graham Galloway and Ms. Gail Durbridge (Centre for Magnetic Resonance (UQ), Associate Professor Ross Cunnington (Queensland Brain Institute) and Dr. Peter Cabot (School of Pharmacy (UQ). In 2009, Dr. Michael Farrell from the Howard Florey Institute, University of Melbourne commenced collaboration with the Rehabilitation team. These studies aim to further develop understanding in the pain processing mechanisms underlying musculoskeletal pain including whiplash, neck pain and low back pain. Methodologies such as Quantitative Sensory Testing, measurement of nociceptor withdrawal reflexes, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and measurement of inflammatory biomarkers are utilized. Outcomes include publications in Pain, Clinical Journal of Pain, Clinical Radiology, Spine. From these studies we have been able to demonstrate that different pain processing mechanisms underlie various spinal pain conditions. PhD scholars Cynan Lewis and Ashley Smith continued work in this area investigating physiological processes underlying ongoing pain following whiplash injury as well as low back pain. Damian Caruana, physiotherapy Honours student from the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences also worked on these projects in Relationships between the physical (biological) and psychological manifestations of whiplash and neck pain This Australian Research Council funded project utilizes unique methodology to measure daily life function and processes involved in recovery or the development of persistent pain following whiplash injury. It explores inter-relationships between physical (muscle and sensory) function, psychological factors and the daily life experiences of whiplash injured people from soon after injury. This project is being conducted in collaboration with the George Institute, University of Sydney (Professor Christopher Maher, PhD scholar Steve Kamper). Initial findings have been published in Pain and The Clinical Journal of Pain. Final data collection for this project will take place in Classification of whiplash injury: translating findings to clinical practice The programme has previously identified important physical and psychological factors associated with delayed recovery following whiplash injury. These factors were identified using laboratory equipment. These studies aim to develop and validate an inexpensive clinical test kit and clinical prediction rule for use in primary care practice. This will facilitate improved diagnosis and classification of the whiplash condition that will allow the targeting of appropriate interventions and enhance recovery. A provisional patent was filed in May 2008 on a portable device to measure cold pain threshold (one prognostic indicator identified by our group) (Associate Professor Sterling and Mr. Matthew Greaves (Hydrexia engineering) in conjunction with Uniquest. This device has undergone extensive testing and now a license is being sought by Uniquest. Dry needling and exercise for chronic whiplash: a randomized controlled trial This study is funded by the NHMRC and MAIC. Recruitment is well underway with 32 participants enrolled in the study to date. The interventions are provided by community physiotherapists in Ipswich, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. The protocol for this study was published in Combined exercise for chronic whiplash: a randomized controlled trial This study is funded by NHMRC, Motor Accident Insurance Commission (Qld) and Motor Accident Authority (NSW). It is a multicentre study between the University of Queensland and the George Institute in Sydney. Recruitment is well underway with nearly 40 participants enrolled in the study. The treatment interventions are provided by community physiotherapists in Brisbane, Sydney and the Gold Coast. The protocol for the trial was published in \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Programme REPORTS Programme 3 - HEALTH ECONOMICS AND HEALTH SYSTEMS Programme The Health Economics and Health Systems Programme, including the ACERH initiative, had three Professorial staff (one full-time), three postdoctoral staff and three part-time research officers in Six PhD students were under the principal or associate supervision of the Programme s staff. Two ACERH staff left during the course of the year to take up continuing university appointments and positions were advertised to fill those posts. While recruitment to fixed term positions in health economics remains a challenge, by the end of 2009 offers had been made to several candidates and at least one is expected to take up an ACERH post in The Programme also welcomed a Visiting Professor and Visiting Scholar in Professor Dorte Gyrd-Hansen joined us for her sabbatical in September 2009 and will return to Denmark in March Dr Narimasa Kumagai also joined us in September 2009 for 12 months sabbatical. Several themes of research continue to develop within the Programme. They include a focus on: \\ Road traffic crashes and their outcomes \\ Insurance markets and problems of insurance \\ Compensation processes and the outcomes (particularly health outcomes) associated with them \\ Child health \\ Distributional issues in the health sector, including the equity of health care financing and delivery \\ The cost-effectiveness of interventions that can improve health, especially for people with musculoskeletal conditions that are attributable to road crashes \\ Quality and safety in health care the Programme were also represented in a number of other international and national meetings. The Director of the Programme, Professor Luke Connelly gave invited keynote presentations at three international conferences and staff and students from the Programme published 14 peer-reviewed papers, a book chapter, and a book during the year. The Programme also collaborated on work that was awarded the Axel Ingelman prize for best presentation at the 34th Annual Meeting of the International Urogynecological Association, Lake Como, Italy. The Programme s successes in 2009 are attributable, not only to its own staff and students, but also its strong collaborative links within CONROD and the Faculty of Health Sciences, but across The University of Queensland. In addition, collaborative efforts with researchers at several other research-intensive universities within Australia (particularly at The Australian National University, The University of Melbourne and The University of Western Australia), and abroad, have contributed to the Programme s standing and success. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ In addition, as the list of presentations and papers in this report attests, researchers in the Programme write on a range of topics that are relevant to public policy and the effects of policy on health and welfare. It was a productive year for the Health Economics and Health Systems Programme. 47 2009 CONROD ANNUAL REPORT 45 Programme REPORTS Programme 4 SOCIAL AND BEHAVIOURAL SCIENCE Programme Report by Professor Justin Kenardy Our Research Programme focuses on the psychological health and wellbeing of adults and children following medical trauma. Children and Families A large part of our programme has focussed on exploring post traumatic stress in children and their parents following a visit to the hospital for a variety of medical issues including visits to the emergency department or admission to hospital following accidental injury, traumatic brain injury, burns or admission to the paediatric intensive care. A degree of psychological distress is common in the initial weeks after medical trauma and for most children these changes are transient with children and their families adapting and moving on. However, for a significant proportion (between per cent) of children the trauma, and their response, has the potential to disrupt their development of cognition, attention, personality style, self-concept, self-esteem and impulse control. Other adverse outcomes reported in the literature include; persistent mood disturbances, tantrums, mood swings and sleep disturbances, post traumatic stress disorder, phobic anxiety. This has both emotional and financial costs for the individual, their family and society as a whole. Our research and that of others indicates that, for these children and their parents, symptoms and associated disability may be ongoing and persist for years. Collaborators Our research Programme is conducted within the context of international efforts to understand the psychological impact of medical trauma on children and their families. Our collaborators include staff from the University of Queensland, Mayne Medical School and the School of Psychology as well as the Universities of Melbourne and Adelaide. In addition, our Programme includes collaborators from The Royal Children s Hospitals (Brisbane and Melbourne), The Mater Children s Hospital, Brisbane, the Mater Child and Youth Mental Health Service and the Queensland Paediatric Rehabilitation Service. Our collaborators come from a variety of disciplines including medical and nursing staff, rehabilitation specialists and staff with expertise in psychology, medical sociology and biostatistics. An important partner in our efforts to understand post-traumatic stress following medical events includes collaborations with researchers and clinicians at The Children s Hospital of Philadelphia including Dr. Nancy Kassam-Adams and Professor Anne Kazak. We have partnered with a number of researchers in the United States and have obtained a grant from the National Institute of Health to support an international consortium to develop a risk assessment tool for post traumatic stress in children and their families. We are also working jointly on the next generation of prevention programmes for children who have been exposed to trauma. We also work closely with students from The University of Queensland and the University of Melbourne as well as a range of international students from The Netherlands and United States. Our Research Programme to Date Our research programme has focussed on: \\ The assessment and diagnosis of the incidence, severity, and course of post traumatic stress in children and their parents following accidental injury, admission to hospital after accidental injury (primarily orthopaedic), traumatic brain injury, paediatric burn injury, and admission to paediatric intensive care (PICU). (Funded by grants from NHMRC and Royal Children s Hospital Foundation) \\ The design and evaluation of early screening tools to identify children at risk of poor psychological outcomes. (Funded by a grant from Royal Children s Hospital Foundation) \\ The design, implementation and evaluation of prevention programme aimed at moderating the effects of medical trauma. (Funded by a grant from MAIC) \\ The design, implementation and evaluation of an early intervention programme to address postconcussion symptoms in children following mild traumatic brain injury. (Funded by a grant from MAIC) \\ The design, implementation and evaluation of an early intervention programme targeting children and families where the impact of medical trauma has resulted in post-traumatic stress disorder. (Funded by a Project Grant from NHMRC)

Programme REPORTS Adults Our research continues in the area of psychological factors in adult injury. The main areas of focus have been: \\ Identification of psychological factors, including psychological comorbidity in recovery following motor vehicle injury. 49 2009 CONROD ANNUAL REPORT 47 Programme REPORTS Programme 5 VOCATIONAL AND COMMUNITY REHABILITATION Programme Report by Professor Elizabeth Kendall In 2009, the Griffith University team consisted of one Professor, two Post-doctoral and 3.5 full-time research fellows and 11 part-time support staff. Sixteen key projects were commenced or progressed during the year. During 2009, the team produced twenty-one publications in peer-reviewed journals (such as Social Science and Medicine, Disability and Rehabilitation, Australian Health Review) with another 9 manuscripts submitted. Eleven industry reports were finalised. The team supervised nine PhD students, two Masters students and one Honours student. Several projects resulted in significant outcomes for practice and policy this year. There is evidence of use of our research findings in courses at Flinders University and other Queensland universities around studies of self-management and community rehabilitation. We have facilitated ongoing research partnerships with key stakeholder organisations and health services to enable research to contribute to planning and policy decisions with inclusion of MAIC in these partnerships. The Griffith research team has provided expertise and advice for health services and rehabilitation providers in the community on brain injury rehabilitation, younger people with complex care needs following traumatic injury/illness and self-management following traumatic injury/illness. Research findings in the area of vocational rehabilitation are being used in the training delivered by the Accident Compensation Corporation in New Zealand. The team has maintained their existing collaborations and have developed new links in 2009 with G-Plan, the Logan-Beaudesert Coalition, Multi-Link Services, AccesServices Inc., Access Arts, Gold Coast Division of General Practice, Wesley Mission Brisbane and QPASTT. The team continues to actively provide representation on key advisory panels including Queensland Health, Acquired Brain Injury Outreach Service, Queensland Self-Management Alliance and Flinders University Self- Management. The Projects Evaluation of the ABIOS STEPS intervention: A statewide intervention This study evaluates individual change in health and well being over time following participation in the STEPS intervention. Specifically, the evaluation will identify the indicators of success for the intervention and the factors that facilitate positive outcomes. Publication was submitted in January. The project is finalised. ABIOS has acquired recurrent funding for the project Traumatic Injury: Management of recovery and the prediction of well-being This study involved a prospective cohort design, using both quantitative and qualitative methods with data collection at hospital discharge and three and six months post-discharge. Quantitative surveys measuring demographics, injury and treatment data, general health, self efficacy, illness perceptions, autonomy, self advocacy, knowledge and support, decision making styles and continuity of care were administered. Reanalysis of the data is being undertaken. Journal articles are currently being prepared. Collective approaches to well-being: Culturally respectful research. This project is underpinned by the Indigenous selfmanagement project. The research in this area has developed into a team approach that focuses on collective approaches to wellbeing and culturally respectful research. We are operationalising a number of important principles in this research agenda and establishing ways in which respectful research can occur in future. The proposed principles are: \\ Formal negotiated research relationships with traditional owners \\ Respect for Indigenous ways of knowing and Indigenous knowledge \\ Promotion of participatory community-based methods and localised responses to the needs of Indigenous people \\ Appropriate collaboration between Indigenous and non-indigenous researchers \\ Commitment to growth and development of Indigenous researchers Three publications have been submitted to peerreview journals with two submissions to peer-reviewed conferences. The final report is being completed.

Programme REPORTS The development of Bi-lingual Natural Helpers to address the lack of access to services by culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) Australians in the community This project focuses on the use of natural helpers to work with CALD communities to promote health and well being. This new model incorporates the use of formally trained Bi- Lingual natural helpers drawn from the local community. By virtue of their background and position in the community, these natural helpers will draw on their existing community linkages in a culturally appropriate way to act as a bridge between the communities and the service system. They will advocate for improved access, ensure that local communities are consulted appropriately and support them in their interpretation and use of services. It is also important to ensure that local input is equitable and that sustainability issues are examined. Evaluation of the implementation stage has been finalised with data being analysed. The final report is currently being completed. A review of the Spinal Cord Injuries Response (SCIR) The project examined and reported on the outcomes of the Spinal Cord Injuries Response, benefits to key stakeholders and the cost effectiveness of the programme. The findings of the research were used to inform the strategic planning and policy formation of spinal cord injury service delivery and improve the service planning for people with spinal cord injury. Publications are currently being edited and finalised. Restrictions to publish the results are currently in place until mid-late Evaluation of Youngcare: An accommodation option for people with high health and high support needs This study is an empirical evaluation of an independent living option for younger people with continual care needs. Within a Logic model framework, the evaluation will consider the contextual elements required to deliver such a model of care, resources available, activities that have/will occur, intermediate outcomes and overall impact and sustainability of the initiative. A longitudinal cohort study will be undertaken using a mixed-methods design. Key outcome indicators include individual quality of life and community partnership experiences. Data analysis is ongoing. One manuscript has been accepted for publication in Disability and Rehabilitation and two others are currently being prepared. Interview and focus group data are currently being transcribed and data are being analysed. Staff workshops have been delivered and evaluation is in progress 1000 Voices The purpose of this project is to collect and display 1000 life narratives from people with disability from around the world. With this collection of narratives we hope to build awareness of the lived experiences of people with disability, to provide opportunities for people with disability to have their own voice in determining how their lives are seen and heard and to make sure that these voices become part of ongoing research, service, and policy development activity in Australia and beyond. The project will centre on a public interactive website that will display and catalogue a minimum of 1000 life narratives from participants in Australia and participating countries. These life narratives will be presented in a number of multimedia and textual formats to accommodate our participating narrators communication strengths and weaknesses. Public launch of the website occurred in early December 2009 at Griffith University Logan with government delegates. Moral Distress in Community-based Research This national multi-phase project will examine the prevalence and effects of moral distress among community based researchers in Australia who work with vulnerable populations such as Indigenous and migrant communities and people with chronic illness and disability. The research will also investigate the training and support needs for Community Based Researchers (CBR) who work with vulnerable populations. We are now awaiting acceptance of publication that has been submitted to the Journal of Social Services Research. Healthy Places: Putting health in context This project will understand how place can influence health and well-being, increase the capacity of community to understand and respond to local health issues, protect and support the social structures that can contribute to health and well being. And encourage different settings to engage in health promotion and prevention of injury/ illness. The Annual Report will be submitted in January 2010; two publications have been accepted by peerreviewed journals.

2009 CONROD ANNUAL REPORT 49 Programme REPORTS Capable Consumers: Managing our own health This is a two year project that aims to understand the health-related experiences of consumers accessing health care provision within the geographical area defined by the Logan Beaudesert Health Coalition. Specifically, the project seeks to understand the interaction between consumers and the health care system and how individual values and beliefs impact on health outcomes. Development of this level of understanding of consumer experience will include ascertaining the processes that people use to adjust to and manage their health, and identify ways in which consumers can be actively engaged in health related interventions. Interviews have been conducted and data are currently being analysed. Active Care Management Programme This is a nine-month area prospective intervention trial within a defined geographical area (Gold Coast Division of General Practice) that aims to increase the coordination of health care for individuals with long term conditions accessing General Practice. This study involved a participatory action research project designed to develop a model of coordinated care for implementation by Practice Nurses within General Practice. Data are being reanalysed and publication is being prepared. Coordinated Care Concept Analysis This was a six month project aimed at identifying the components of Coordinated Care through analysis of the concept and providing a report to General Practice Queensland for distribution amongst Divisions of General Practice within Queensland. Coordinated care is a term frequently used to describe an approach to health care delivery in a complex primary health care system. However, the elements constituting the concept are not completely understood, nor clearly defined. Rather the term is often used simultaneously and interchangeably to conceptualize the structure, process, philosophy and interpersonal dimensions of care delivery. This project sought to explore current literature and develop an understanding of the attributes of coordinated care. Two publications are currently being prepared for the Medical Journal of Australia. Social Care Networks Shorter hospital stays and the push towards community health settings have inadvertently created a new social economy in Australia around informal human structures of support and significance (people and partnerships). This situation has revealed uncertainties about the capacity of the social infrastructure to support these systemic changes. In response to contemporary relational concerns, this project aims to provide definitive theoretical and empirical advances to the social capital knowledge base. Specifically, the project will: \\ Identify network forms, functions and pathways of social networks in chronic disease \\ Extend the theoretical framework of networks in health and statistically test the value of human structures of support and significance across multi-levels (system, organisation, consumer) \\ Use findings to assign leverage points and priorities for social network capacity building to promote resilient networks and develop value-based social policy Organisational network data is ongoing. Consumer network data commenced and the Health Professional data collection will be commencing in April Knowledge Transfer The purpose of this research is to map and evaluate knowledge transfer within the LBHC and across the broader LBHC Network. The specific aims of the research are to: \\ Identify and track the flows of knowledge development and information transfer between subgroups and members of the LBHC learning community \\ Identify effective processes of knowledge transfer within the Logan-Beaudesert health district learning community \\ Identify the reach of knowledge transfer and communication activities between key groups such as the Board, Programme Areas, Advisory Groups, the broader LBHC Network, and health consumers. Knowledge transfer beyond the Logan-Beaudesert district will also be investigated where appropriate, for example, influence on state-wide or national policy. The Annual Report was completed in December Observations will be continuing throughout A manuscript has also been submitted for publication to the Journal of Ethnography.

Programme REPORTS Health Check of the Comprehensive Third Party Scheme Following a motor vehicle accident, individuals are usually required to make an insurance claim under comprehensive third party insurance (CTP) to compensate for their injury and loss. However, the claimant process for individuals following a motor vehicle accident is not necessarily easy to navigate or understand and can potentially add a further burden to an already complex process. The purpose of this research is to investigate claimant experiences of, and attitudes towards, the current Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Insurance Claims scheme in Queensland. This research will help to identify gaps and strengths in the process for the benefit of future claimants. This research aims to understand the experiences (quantitative and qualitative) of insurance claimants following their motor vehicle accident for all claims finalised with the Motor Accident Insurance Commission in the past 12 months. Key areas to be investigated include: \\ Claimant awareness \\ Knowledge and information about the CTP Scheme, \\ Claimant experiences of, and attitudes towards the claims process, \\ Experiences of self-claimants (i.e. those who do not engage legal representation) and experiences of claimants who engage legal representation, \\ Experiences and awareness of treatment and rehabilitation options, \\ Settlement efficiency \\ Satisfaction and quality of life of claimants who experience catastrophic injuries. RESP-ECCT: Respite for Emerging Communities in Cultural Transition The RESP-ECCT project is a highly innovative and collaborative project aimed at three main areas of development: service delivery, establishment of a CALD service model and sector/community capacity building as it relates to respite needs for people from diverse backgrounds experiencing severe mental illness. Naturally, any new approach in providing services raises important questions for individuals, families, staff, organisations, funders and the community more broadly. Research conducted by Griffith University, in collaboration with the RESP-ECCT consortia members will seek to evaluate aspects of the project so as to inform similar approaches in the future. The literature review has been finalised and the organisational survey has been completed. Several focus groups have been facilitated with the writing up preliminary results and development of guiding principles for a decision-making model. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ The survey has been distributed (hard copy and online) to CTP clients. Data collection is ongoing and is currently being collated and entered with the literature review finalised.

FELLOWSHIP REPORTS 2009 CONROD/Royal College Of Surgeons Trauma Fellowship Recipient: A/Professor Phillip Walker, Chairman, Department of Vascular Surgery, Royal Brisbane & Women s Hospital Project title: Establishment of a statewide trauma registry for the Endovascular Management of Thoracic Aortic Trauma (TEVAR for TAT Registry) Aims: The aim of this project is to establish a statewide Queensland registry to document the clinical presentation, procedural outcomes and follow-up results of endovascular stent-graft repair (TEVAR) of traumatic thoracic aortic tears throughout Queensland. Ultimately, the aim is to develop an online data entry system for data input from vascular centres throughout Australasia with the additional aim of expanding the registry to include the full spectrum of indications for TEVAR and to secure ongoing funding to maintain an Australasian Registry. Current Progress: Funding from this Fellowship has been used to employ a research officer (Ms. Jessica Gale) at the University of Queensland and the Department of Vascular Surgery at Royal Brisbane & Women s Hospital to establish the Registry in Queensland. Agreement for participation in the registry has been obtained from all the Vascular Surgery Units in Queensland. Agreement was obtained from Professor Tim Buckenham from Christchurch in New Zealand to allow us to mirror the data set that has been used in the Thoracic Aortic Trauma Repair section of the New Zealand Registry for Endovascular Treatment of Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms, Dissection & Trauma. This harmonisation of the data will allow combined and comparative analysis in the future. Thirty-nine patients were identified in Queensland who have undergone TEVAR for traumatic aortic tears and form the basis of the initial registry. There were 30 males (77 per cent) and 9 females. Mean age was 42 years (range years, median 40 years). Most injuries were related to motor vehicle or motor cycle accidents. All but one patient survived giving mortality rate for this group of 2.6 per cent. Full data on this cohort will be submitted for presentation at the ANZ Society for Vascular Surgery Vascular 2010 meeting. We propose publishing this early state-wide experience and a review article on TEVAR for thoracic aortic trauma in the ANZ Journal of Surgery. I have discussed rolling out the Registry nationally in Australia with Professor Tim Buckenham who oversees the New Zealand Registry to form an Australian and New Zealand Registry. This is dependent on securing ongoing recurrent funding for data management and audit and moving to an online system for data entry. I have also discussed linking the TEVAR for TAT Registry data set to the recently instituted Australasian Vascular Audit (AVA), which commenced on January 1, 2010 with Dr. Barry Beiles who is the administrator of the AVA. He has informed me that this is technically easy to do and has given me in-principle support to progress this mechanism for expanding the registry binationally through the AVA. Professor Buckenham has received agreement from the New Zealand Vascular Society to join with Queensland to increase the numbers in the thoracic aortic trauma section of the database and has sought costings to progress this initiative. I am in the process of sourcing recurrent funds and National Ethics approval to advance this initiative. Publications and Presentations: Nil to date. The registry data will be submitted for presentation at the ANZ Society for Vascular Surgery Vascular 2010 meeting. We propose publishing this early state-wide experience and a review article on TEVAR for thoracic aortic trauma in the ANZ Journal of Surgery. Award: $50,000.00
