Questions
Morning Star Child Development Center
Getting Fit for Our Future and Theirs Morning Star is a child development center that provides daily care to children 6 weeks of age through Pre-K, as well as after school care for K-5th graders. We have approximately 45 employees. The needs of our employees included inexpensive and easily accessible opportunities to engage in physical exercise, as well as learn about health and wellness. Our staff also needed ways to help with stress reduction due to the nature of our work.
Getting Fit for Our Future and Theirs Before our effort to create a wellness program at Morning Star, there had been no previous attempts to foster health awareness among our teachers. We had one on-site drink machine that included all carbonated, sugary drink options and no healthy snack options. Also, prior to the wellness program, there were little to no opportunities to engage in physical activities individually or as a group, therefore limiting the interaction and development of relationships between co-workers outside of the classroom.
Getting Fit for Our Future and Theirs Kick-off and Success Story Luncheons 2 Nutritional Eating Classes Personal Training Sessions Yoga/Pilates Class and Demonstration New Healthier Vending Machines Individual Exercise Equipment Monthly Newsletters Employee Incentives
Looking Back Successes Continued training Sessions Newsletters (tips, events, recipes, encouragement) Increased comradery among co-workers Weight loss, better nutrition and stress reduction Challenges Motivation among individuals to workout outside of the group fitness classes. Use of the equipment is very limited We have learned that the group activities are more successful.
Megan s Success Story Megan suffers from Severe Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Before our program began, Megan was treating her anxiety with only different medications, but since has discovered that physical exercise also helps her to manage her symptoms. Megan has not only been attending the personal trainer sessions, but has also been using the exercise equipment on her own, and has since been able to reduce her medication usage. She has also reported that she has began adding running to her physical activity routine in order to better manage her stress. Go Megan!!
Tylese s Success Story At the beginning of our health program, Tylese had been told by her doctor that she was considered to be at an unhealthy and possibly dangerous weight. Through our program, Tylese has been attending all personal trainer sessions, guest speaker events, drinking more water, eating at home more, and has even signed a contract with the trainer to attend private sessions at his gym. Tylese continues to report that she not only feels better physically, but her clothes are fitting loser and she is sleeping better at night. She has reported in total a loss of 13 pounds and continues to work towards her goals!! Go Tylese!!

Public Service The City of Knoxville Public Service Department (PSD) has 304 employees and is responsible for maintaining the City s infrastructure (i.e. brush/leaf collection, potholes, sidewalk repair, facility maintenance, etc.) Our employees perform labor-intensive jobs involving heavy equipment primarily in an outdoor environment. It is important that we remain physically fit and maintain our joint and muscular health in order to minimize the risk of injury. Employees have asked for years for exercise equipment. This grant allowed us the opportunity.
Wellness in the City The City s wellness program really focuses on proper diet and chronic diseases like diabetes, supplemented by occasional yoga or strength/conditioning classes. This equipment has allowed employees to exercise in addition to the classes offered through the City of Knoxville wellness program. We have built our current departmental program from the ground up and have made great strides over the past six months.

Also, due to the nature of our work, employees need to be reminded it is ok to take time for themselves and to make time for enjoyable activities outside of work. Employees were consistently eating fast food, bringing in sweets, drinking sugary drinks, and reporting fatigue, headaches, body aches, depressed/irritable mood, etc.

City of Knoxville
My Fit Health The City of Knoxville has about 1530 benefit eligible employees and about 120 early retirees. With our population spread out in different parts of town and different shifts, we need multiple ways to deliver communications and programs to everyone. 82 My Fit Health Through the City s relationship with Healthcare 21 became aware of Diabetes Prevention Program. Program sponsored by CDC First 16 weeks: 1 hour per week 1 hour per month 6 months Requires documentation of exercise and nutrition Program Goal: 5-7% of body weight Started a pilot program September 2014 (Voluntary) Rolled out another pilot March 2015 (Voluntary)
