Pam s office PRESENTED BY: Pamela Passow Assistant Beaches Parks and Recreation Director, San Clemente, CA Peggy Lacayo Recreation Supervisor, Beaches Parks and Recreation, San Clemente, CA Peggy s office
FIT FACTS! ENERGY IN = ENERGY OUT Ice Breaker - FIT FACTS How much energy must you expend to enjoy the following foods? (8 1/2x 11 cards of food) Participants are asked to match Great activity for employee meetings & Community programs.
OBJECTIVES: Justify the need for a Worksite Wellness Program or to refresh an existing one. Learn how other agencies have offered successful Worksite Wellness Programs. How to start your Worksite Wellness Program in your agency (or improve yours)!
WHY SHOULD WE BOTHER? A healthy, productive workforce is vital to your city s success. When you improve employee health, you ll see impressive results: Fewer sick days. Lower employee turnover. Other improvements can be less obvious but even more important: Better focus. Higher performance. A positive work attitude. Together, these changes add up to a powerful business advantage. Adults with multiple risk factors for disease (e.g., high blood pressure, weight, smoking, and sedentary habits) are more likely to be high-cost employees in terms of: Healthcare use Absenteeism Disability Overall productivity
WHAT IT MEANS TO THE AVERAGE EMPLOYER Rising health care costs are not sustainable Lifestyle and unhealthy behavior drive costs Employers can impact health Medical costs are 77% higher for obese person An obese person averages 7 or more absences per year Obesity related disabilities cost employers upwards of $8,720 per claimant per year Smoking is the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death. It is a prime factor in heart disease, stroke and chronic lung disease. Smoking related-diseases kill one in 10 adults globally, or cause four million deaths. By 2030, if current trends continue, smoking will kill one in six people. USE your data to build a culture of health
THE PROMISE OF PREVENTION Improve productivity, Improve Retention, and Increase Employee Satisfaction (Investment in human capital) Lower Healthcare Cost Enhance image and long-term interest by promoting health beyond the worksite
BRAINSTORM IDEAS FOR WORKSITE WELLNESS What can you do to convince management how important wellness is? Share ideas that would motivate and inspire your fellow co-workers. How do you sustain a program? Ideas are great but how do you keep it moving from one year to the next?
SUCCESSFUL WORKSITE WELLNESS PROGRAMS City of La Mirada, California Started with Employee Survey Established a Wellness Committee (chaired by Community Services Manager) Kicked off with a program (Active for Life American Cancer Society) Started employee discounts and access to showers and locker rooms Walking clubs and tennis games Moved to Human Resources for administration of program
SUCCESSFUL WORKSITE WELLNESS PROGRAMS City of San Clemente, California Started with Human Resources but recharged by the Recreation Division Held employee interest survey and asked for ideas on recharging the program. Started a committee of Wellness Champions from different departments for balanced representation. Hosted Employee Health and Wellness Fair in combination with the Benefits Fair. Had local businesses participate and offer discounts and rewards for Wellness members. Hosted Team Challenge from Oct-Dec to keep staff on track and healthy over the holidays. Monthly activity logs submitted to program for accountability. Info shared on APP MyFitnessPal. Provided rewards such as City Parking Permit, Equipment or Event reimbursements, up to $50. Now shared with both departments using dual resources Started with 35% employee participation, now at 80% participation! 67% of staff signed up with a team for the Challenge! San Clemente became a HEAL city in 2012 (shows City Council support)
USE OF TECHNOLOGY Fitness Apps and Trackers Mobile and Web based Apps and Trackers provide social support and accountability for the busy professional. Activity reports can be downloaded and reported to employers or fitness teams.
SUCCESSFUL WORKSITE WELLNESS PROGRAMS City of Mountain View, California: Employee Wellness Plan, BEWELLMV, Nutrition, Activity, Mind, Prevention, Healthy Community = Healthy City City of Riverside, California: Program offers healthy living workshops and fitness activities. Preliminary data suggest that the program has decreased absenteeism and life insurance utilization. The American Heart Association recognized Riverside for its program in City of Thousand Oaks, California: Operates on a shoestring budget with staff coordinating nutrition and exercise classes, educational workshops on health and work-life balance topics, and a website.
