9 Why it s Urgent and Important 64% of Lancaster County residents are overweight/obese Obese persons cost companies 77% more money For most employers, chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, obesity, arthritis and diabetes are among the most prevalent, costly, and preventable of all health problems (CDC) Obesity can sap productivity, worsen mobility and morale, and increase healthcare claims, sick days, and occupational injuries. Programs that focus on workplace obesity prevention have shown to reverse these trends. (Harvard School of Public Health)

14 Affordable Care Act: A Brief Overview of Participatory Wellness Programs Wellness Regulations A program that either doesn t provide a reward or doesn t include any conditions or obtaining a reward- based on an individual satisfying a standard related to a health factor Examples: Reimbursing for fitness center membership; Health Screenings that provide a reward to participants, but doesn t reward based on outcomes; rewarding employees to attend a monthly, no-cost health education seminar Health-Contingent Wellness Programs Requires an individual to satisfy a standard related to a health factor to obtain a reward There are two subcategories of health-contingent wellness programs: Activity-only wellness programs Outcome-based wellness programs

15 Affordable Care Act: A Brief Overview of Wellness Regulations Health-Contingent Wellness Programs Activity-Only Wellness Programs Individual is required to perform/complete an activity related to a health factor to receive reward. Does not require that person to attain or maintain a health outcome Examples: walking, dieting or exercise programs Outcome-Based Wellness Programs Individual must attain or maintain a specific health outcome in order to receive reward. Examples: Smoke-free lifestyle, obtaining certain BMI, BP and/or cholesterol
