2 Section1:EvanstonScholarsOverview AddressingaNeed Navigatingthecollegeapplicationprocesscanbeoverwhelmingformanyhighschoolstudents. Andwhenstudentsgettocollege,somehitroadblocksandsteeroffcourse.Formany,thekey tosuccessfullycompletingcollegeisbenefittingfromasupportsystem.unfortunately,too manystudentslackresourcesandguidance.herearesomeat?a?glancefactsaboutthestateof collegematriculation,retention,andgraduation: Arecentnationalstudystatedthat34%oflowOincomestudentsattendcollegeas comparedto83%ofstudentsfromhighoincomefamilies. Manystudiescitethatcollegepreparatoryguidanceisakeyfactortoincrease enrollmentincollegeforlow?incomestudents Only10%oflowOincomecollegestudentswillleavehighereducationwithadegree 75%ofstudentswhodropoutleavewithintheirfirsttwoyearsofcollege Somestudiessuggestthatmanystudentsdropoutofcollegebecausetheydon'tfinda "goodfit"collegeandarenotfullyinformedabouttheirchoices. Agraduateofafour?yearcollegewillmakealmost$1millionmorethanahighschool graduateoveralifetime Manystudents,especiallyfirst?generationand/orminoritystudents,needmoreguidance andsupporttohelpfinda"goodfit"college.theyalsoneedextrapreparationand mentoringtohelpthemnavigatethechallengesofhighereducationandtostayontrackfor collegecompletion. WhatWeDo Thatiswhyin2011,westartedEvanstonScholars. EvanstonScholarsisanon?profitorganizationthatimprovescollegeaccessandsuccessfora diversegroupofambitiousevanstonstudents,whoaretraditionallyfirstgenerationcollege entrants,low income,andstudentsofcolor,startingwiththecollegeadmissionsprocessand continuinguntilgraduation. Thecomprehensive,six?yearprogramoffersworkshops,mentors,ACTprepandcollege counselingtosupportstudents.whileweworkincooperationwithevanstontownshiphigh School,weareaseparateentity. HowFarWeHaveCome Wehave134Scholarsintheprogram o 8CollegeSeniors o 13CollegeJuniors o 24CollegeSophomores

3 o 26CollegeFreshmen o 29HSSeniors o 34HSJuniors 94%ofourcollegescholarsarepersistingtowardsacollegedegree. 100%ofallofourScholarshavebeenacceptedtoa4Oyearcollege 70%ofourmostrecentclassesreceivedfullOtuitionscholarships Wehave3fullOtimestaff;5partOtimestaff;3SuperVolunteers Ourcurrentbudgetisnearly$500,000andourdonorbaseisgrowing) Wenowhaveover130mentorsonboard ThankstotheEvanstonScholarsprogramandmentorslikeyou,ourScholarsare becomingmorepreparedforthefuture. WhoAreOurScholars? Studentswitha2.7GPAorhigher 80%ofourScholarsdidnothaveparentswhograduatedfromcollege 85%ofourScholarsareonfree/reducedlunch Thisyear sclassclassof2017)ataglance: We had 70 applications. EvanstonScholarsmentorsrepresentadiverseassemblyofpeople.Theycomefroma broadspectrumofethnicgroups,economiclevels,professions,religionsandsocial backgrounds.however,theysharecharacteristicsthatmakethemeffective.asuccessful EvanstonScholarmentorshould: Haveadesiretosharethelessonslearnedthroughoutlife,whichmayimpactthelifeof yourstudent. Havetimetospenddevelopingahealthyworkingrelationship.SomeScholarswillneed moreinputtogetthroughthecollegeprocessandsomewillneedless.spendingtimewith yourscholaronaregularbasiswillhelpyoudevelopameaningfulrelationshipregardlessof yourmentee slevelofneed.seesuggestionsbelowforactivityideas. Showcompassion/opennesstodiscussmattersthatdirectlypertaintothementor/student relationshipsuchasrace,socio?economicstatus,education,appearanceoranyotherfactor thatmightinfluenceperceptionandposition. 7 ConnectwithYourScholar sparents/guardians.oneofthemostimportantthingsthat youcandotoensureasuccessfulrelationshipwithyourstudentistodeveloparelationship withhis/herparentorguardian.developingthisconnectionprovidesconsistencyand uniformitybetweenyouandtheparentsregardingevanstonscholars expectationsand demonstratestothestudentthathis/herparentstrustyou.understandthatparentsmay haveapprehensionsregardingtheirchild sparticipationinevanstonscholars.atthe beginningofyourrelationshipwithyourstudent,makeitcleartotheparentsthatyouwant toworkinconjunctionwiththem.youarearesourceandapartnerinthedevelopmentof theirchild sacademicsuccess.establishingthisearlyintherelationshipcanalleviatefuture problems.
