16 New Developments Lago Mar Adventure Pointe Plans are coming together for new a theme park in Texas City. The 25-acre park Adventure Pointe in Texas City would have a retro- Americana theme and would be located next to the Tanger Outlet Mall on I-45 South. Groundbreaking is planned for spring 2014, with a completion date some time in A talented team of creative architects has been assembled to make this park is a reality and it is scheduled to open 2015! Adventure Pointe appears to be aiming for something akin to the 60s heyday of AstroWorld with a modern sensibility. Playland Park itself was AstroWorld before AstroWorld existed. Adventure Pointe was originally to be named Playland Park, before a name change. A 2,033 acre community on I-45, from just north of FM1764 to Holland Road in Texas City. The propertyowned by Land Tejas is all on the west side of I-45 and consists of 2,033 acres, Another 1,300 acres on the east side of I-45 is part of Lago Mar, but is owned by two companies not affiliated with Land Tejas. The project will have approximately 4,000 homes, with both gated and non-gated neighborhoods. With a membership comprised of around 100 local retirees who want to remain active in the community, the Golden Division provides valuable assistance to the Chamber of a vast array of projects. 25 City of Texas City Texas City prides itself on providing quality services and amenities for its citizens. With over 890 acres of parks spread over 40 locations throughout the City, plus five miles of recreational opportunities along the Texas City Dike, the City of Texas City has one of the best parks, recreational and tourism departments in the State. With the help of a BP contribution in 2008, the City is in the process of developing a mix-use development called Central Park which will include a 400+ acre environmental park with walking/ jogging/biking trails and other interactive facilities. Also with the contribution from BP, the City recently developed the 40+ acre Carlos Garza Sports Complex that houses a five field softball star complex with ball fields for soccer, baseball and football. Two recently completed projects which receive a great deal of use are the Sanders/Vincent and Carver Park Community Centers which are multi-purpose facilities with splash parks and grounds. These two facilities compliment the Matthew T. Doyle Natatorium - a state of the art facility that sets itself apart from similar facilities in the Gulf Coast Area. The Natatorium features an eight-lane, stretch 25 meter pool with a depth ranging from 3 feet 6 inches to 14 feet. A moveable bulkhead enables the pool to be configured into a 25 meter or 25 yard competition ready pool with warm/cool down lanes. The diving well is equipped with 1 meter and 3 meter diving boards. The Natatorium not only serves as the Texas City High School swimming and diving venue but is designed as a site that also benefits the citizen s use for recreation, fitness and instruction. Bolstering the City s great water venues is a modern Family Aquatic Center. This facility has water slides, a lazy river, a zerodepth entry and play area, a children s spray and splash zone, lots of shade structures and locker room. In addition, the City has recently completed a state-of-the-art skate park. The unique streetscape design and straight lines and nice hills make it a hit with the youth. The natural shade from the large oak trees make it pleasant for parents or anybody to sit and enjoy watching. While the pace has lessened with the slowing housing industry, Land Tejas is still committed to its 3,300 acre development located on both sides of 1-45 from Hughes Road to Emmett F. Lowry Expressway, called Lago Mar. The development will add parks, amenity lakes, office parks, commercial and retail in a town center atmosphere, and 10,000 new homes. The Tanger Outlet Mall has recently opened and is now an anchor to the Lago Mar development. Buc-ee s has located its largest travel center in Texas within Lago Mar (60,000+ square feet). A 25 acre amusement park is proposed that has the ability to grow in size, will have several themed areas eateries and a major hotel chain. A second residential development is near completion. A unique water front development called Grand Cay located inside the levee allows homeowners who enjoy boating the safety of being in-land with direct boat access to the bay and Gulf. This development has over 500 lots available. The City has responded to Hurricane Ike and has recovered well. 26 chemical industry and is still looking at developing Shoal Point into a container facility by Texas City Museum With a focus on Texas City history and local industries, the recently renovated museum makes for a leisurely afternoon. Full of local history on the 1947 disaster, the birth of the U.S. Air Force, the Petroleum Industry and a huge display of miniature trains by the Galveston County Model Railroad Club. Admission is $3.00 for adults, $2.00 for seniors and $1.00 for children. Museum hours are Tuesday-Saturday from 10:00am-4:00pm. (The model train display is open only on Saturdays) For information on the Museum or the City by the Bay Tours, call Heritage Square The architecture and history of the early homes in Texas City can be appreciated at Heritage Square with the refurbished and restored Davison Home, Engineers Cottage, William Moore Home and the Wetzel house. The Davison Home is open to the public on the first Sunday of each month from 2:00pm-4:00pm. Admission is $1.00 for adults and 50 cents for children. The 1867 Settlement Historic District The Settlement history is a story of success against all odds, displayed on kiosks and Texas Historical Markers placed throughout the community. The cemetery has been designated as a Texas Historic Cemetery by the State of Texas and the US Department of Interior officially placed the 1867 Settlement Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places of America. Bayou Golf Course Bayou Golf Course opened in 1974 and is a championship layout designed by the Houston based architect Joe Finger. The 200 acre layout is located on the bank of Moses Bayou with elevated greens and large tees. Golfers enjoy the tropical climate for year round play. Water located on 12 holes and the 20 sand traps present a very challenging round of golf. This year (spring, summer of 2014) the golf course goes under renovations to re-do the greens and other improvements including a 9 hole pitch and putt course perfect for families, youth learning the sport, or someone just wanting to hone their skills on the short game. The Great Outdoors Texas City has much to offer anyone who enjoys outdoor activities. With more than 890 acres of city parks, you re sure to find something to enjoy at these natural havens of lush greenery, amazing sculptures and resting areas. The City s Hike and Bike Trail covers 13 miles and includes a 1.5 mile Fitness Trail with exercise stations. The Texas City Shooting Range is an all-weather range with 28 stations for all legal caliber rifles and 11 stations for handguns. It also includes two regulation skeet fields and one trap field. The Beauty of Art Enjoy the beauty of art throughout Texas City. More than 40 bronze statues and sculptures adorn many of our city parks, buildings and trails. Paintings that depict Texas City s history and the history of our nation hang in the Charles T. Doyle Convention Center. Nine fountains throughout the area add a touch of elegance and beauty to our city. Texas City Dike The Texas City Dike has been advertised as the longest manmade pier at 5.2 miles long. It has 5 boat ramps (The Samson/Yarbrough is the busiest boat ramp in the Galveston Bay area) providing the second busiest boat launch area in Texas. After completion of the roughly $3.5 million dollar Cedar Drive street project that improved one of the major thoroughfares, La Marque didn t stop there; a new street program began. More than 50 streets are being updated and / or reconstructed. Infrastructure improvements are also being made. Recently completed sewer expansion projects have opened up a significant amount of acreage for future commercial development. 32 highly effective Community-Oriented Policing effort that is successfully preventing, reducing, and controlling crime and the fear of crime within the city. Now with 14 active Community Watch groups throughout the city (with each group/neighborhood assigned to a highly motivated Community Policing Officer) the city is emerging to be a public safety pace setter for Galveston County relating to personalized policing : where Officers work in a partnership with residents to jointly solve contemporary community problems. The City of La Marque took a significant step this fiscal year to improve the efficiency of utility billing and payments for residential and commercial customers. Through a coordinated effort between the Finance Department and Technology Staff, the City of La Marque now offers bank draft services, online billing, online payments, and utility usage history. The La Marque Public Library is very progressive and has made significant improvements during the last year. Recent updates have made for a more user friendly environment that appeals to all ages. Children s programs have been expanded and include outreach services to Early Childhood and several local childcare facilities that cannot bring their classes to the Library. The Library s collection is being updated to focus on more relevant, high-demand titles. The Library now has ebooks available for patrons to check out on mobile devices such as ipads, Kindles, and other ereaders. The Library is continually working on implementing and improving children, young adult, and adult programs which will embrace literacy and lifelong learning. The library continues to offer internet access, Wi-Fi, Microsoft Office, printing, copying, and faxing services, along with professional assistance to meet any information needs. The City of La Marque s Development Services Department, formally known as the Building and Inspections Department gladly assists customers throughout the development process. These processes include reviewing, permitting, inspecting and granting authority to develop land and occupy buildings within the City. More specifically, the department is responsible for subdivision mapping / parcel addressing, zoning administration, subdivision administration, building code administration, landscaping, sign regulation, code compliance, and development review of drainage. In addition to protecting the health, safety, and public welfare through city ordinances, regulations of land development and construction, the Department seeks to provide an efficient and effective development process that supports City growth and economic development. The Development Services Department s number one focus is to continue to be responsive to the needs of our customers. Together we can continue to make La Marque the place to be! So come see us, we are here to help! Boards like the Clean City Commission and the Parks Board work to improve the appearance of the City and its parks for residents and visitors. These dedicated individuals collectively make a positive impact, one project at a time. Whether it is a program like Adopt- A-Spot or new playground equipment, the improvements made through these volunteers are appreciated by all.
