Phone: For more information, visit the Charmeck website Town Government: Civics 101 Learn more about our municipal government by attending Civics 101, a seven week citizen s academy designed to educate, inform and entertain residents interested in learning more about the functions of town. This free program is open to Davidson residents and residents of Davidson s extra-territorial jurisdiction (ETJ) who are 18 and older. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss departmental functions and operations with town department heads, tour the fire and police departments, learn about town history

3 from Davidson College s archivist, and take part in a personalized question-andanswer session with the board of commissioners. For more information go to Boards and Commissions There are numerous boards and commissions on which citizens may serve including the Design Review Board, the Greenways, Bikeways and Trails Advisory Board, the Natural Assets Committee, the Public Art Commission, the Planning Board, and the Recreation advisory committee. For more information on these boards and commissions, as well as other boards and commissions with Davidson representation, please go to: Trash Collection & Recycling For in-town residents: Allied Waste: The pick-up schedule is as follows: Wednesdays: Curbside pick-up of trash, yard debris and recycling For a roll-out garbage cart or recycling bin or to report service problems, call Allied Waste at For residents in the ETJ: Ross Sanitation: Recycling: The following items may be recycled: Glass containers (without lids) Aluminum soft drink cans Tin or steel cans Newspapers and advertising supplements Magazines Plastic bottles (for soft drinks, milk, etc., codes 1,2,3,4,5,7) Liquor bottles (no tops) Spiral paper Cardboard boxes must be broken down and not larger than 3'x3 No paint or aerosol cans Allied Waste does not pick up recycling bins at condominium complexes or apartments, but materials can be dropped off in the bins located behind the

4 Davidson Village Inn off Jackson and Depot Streets. Other Recycling and Garbage Options There is a Mecklenburg County recycling center on Highway 21, south of Huntersville, that will accept other trash and recyclables, such as: Cardboard Paper trash Construction materials Mattresses Paint cans Electronics Pesticides The center is open Monday through Saturday from 7am - 4pm. You must separate your trash and place it in large metal containers at the recycling center. Note: Recycled mulch is also available for pick up at the site for a very reasonable cost. 5 Children living in Davidson are assigned to the public schools within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System. Children who reside in Davidson are assigned to Davidson Elementary, Bailey Middle and Hough High Schools. Additional educational choices: Community School of Davidson - Charter school, K through high school. Davidson College - Private college Davidson Day School - Private school - K through 12. Davidson Elementary School Davidson Elementary School - Public school, K through 5. McKinney Academy - Private school, K through 5. Pine Lake Preparatory Charter school, K through 12. Woodlawn School Private school, K through 12. Vehicle Registration In the case of new residents, you must register your motor vehicle at the expiration of the time granted by reciprocity agreement between North Carolina and your prior state of residence (usually 30 days) or when gainful employment is accepted, whichever occurs first. You must present a valid North Carolina Driver's License or a North Carolina Identification Card to register a vehicle in North Carolina. Valid driver's licenses from other states may be accepted for vehicle registrations with documentation of the following: Military active duty stationed in NC College enrollment in a NC school Vehicle garaged in NC for a minimum of 6 months Court-ordered sale of a vehicle; Vehicle is co-owned Registration for a motor home Documented medical condition For information on how to get your North Carolina Driver License visit Driver Services:

6 The closest DMV office is located in Mooresville at North Main Street, Mooresville, NC Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm Voter Registration If you have moved less than 30 days ago, you should vote at your old precinct. If you choose to vote at your new location, you will have to use a paper provisional ballot; you will not be able to vote on the voting machine. If you moved more than 30 days ago but didn t get a new voter registration card, and don t know where to vote you must change your address with the Board of Elections.
