GEORGE BOULEVARD, MONCTON, NEW BRUNSWICK BUSINESS MEETING SEPTEMBER 16, 2014 The meeting of the District Education Council, Anglophone East School District, was held at 1077 St. George Blvd. on Tuesday September 16, The following were present: Present: DOYLE, Harry BREWER, Roberta JONES, Alan NICHOL, Tamara LAWSON, Angela HEBBLETHWAITE, Ian DOWNEY, RYAN KINGSTON, Denise, Acting Council Secretary INGERSOLL, Gregg, Superintendent Absent: GALLANT, John FEINDEL, Wayne Welcome Chair Nichol welcomed guests. Those in attendance were: Guests: Stephanie Patterson Aubrey Kirkpatrick George Crossman Brent MacMackin The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM by Chair Tamara Nichol 1.0 CALL TO ORDER The following items were added to the Agenda: 7.4 HTHS and BMHS Sports Field Harry Doyle 2.0 AGENDA APPROVAL Moved by Ian Hebblethwaite, seconded by Roberta Brewer to approve the agenda as amended. Motion Carried. 1

2 MINUTES SEPTEMBER 16, 2014 DISTRICT EDUCATION COUNCIL BUSINESS MEETING Page 2 No conflict of interest was declared. 3.0 DECLARATION OF CONFLICT OF INTEREST Moved by Alan Jones, seconded by Ryan Downey to approve the minutes of August 19, Motion carried. Tim Wallance Abstained. 4.0 APPROVAL OF AUGUST 19, 2014 MINUTES There were no public comments. Moved by Harry Doyle, seconded by Roberta Brewer that Monitoring Report Policy 4.3 Financial Condition be tabled until the October 21, 2014 meeting. Motion carried. 6.0 PUBLIC COMMENTS 7.0 NEW BUSINESS 7.1 POLICY 4.3 FINANCIAL CONDITION Moved by Angela Lawson, seconded by Ian Hebblethwaite, that the DEC of the Anglophone East School District accept and receive Limitations Policy 4.5 Asset Protection. 7.2 POLICY 4.5 ASSET PROTECTION Monitoring Report Limitations Policy 4.5 Asset Protection was submitted and reviewed by council members prior to the meeting. Aubrey Kirkpatrick, Director of Finance and Administration, was present to answer questions. Ian Hebblethwaite enquired if there was a policy regarding school bus speeds with students on board without restraints. Mr. Kirkpatrick advised that all school buses are required to follow the speed limits under the motor vehicle act (including school zone rules). Motion carried. Chair Nichol announced that PSSC training would take place in October. Good feedback has been received from last year s training session. The Chair would like to invite Stacey Brown, DEC Manager, to do a presentation. Hearing no objections it was decided by consensus to invite Stacey Brown to present at the October, 2014 PSSC Training session. Discussion turned to date, location and new ideas. Riverview Middle School was favored for the training session and the dates of October 6, 7 and 8 were selected as possible dates. Council member Tim Wallace will do the opening ice breakers. It was decided by consensus to provide coffee, tea and sweets for the session. Chair Nichol will advise the DEC members of the final date once the availability of the DEC Manager and the facility are confirmed. 7.3 PSSC TRAINING 2

Harry Doyle brought forth information on the contributions of the City of Moncton and the Province of New Brunswick in the construction of the new sports fields at Bernice McNaughton High School and Harrison Trimble High School. Member Doyle would like to acknowledge these partners and it was decided by consensus that letters of thanks be written to both the City of Moncton and the Province of New Brunswick for their assistance. 7.4 HTHS SPORTS FIELD AND BMHS FIELD The Superintendent presented a written report. See attached. Moved by Ian Hebblethwaite, seconded by Tim Wallace that a letter of congratulations be sent to Arthur Moore. Motion carried. Chair Nichol reported that she participated in a conference call with regard to the new assessments being rolled out in September. Chair Nichol advised that she attended a Council of DEC Chairs meeting and they are considering conducting a survey of parents and teachers as a method of reaching out to the public for feedback. Discussion followed. Angela Lawson will bring back a list of survey providers to the next DEC meeting. 8.0 SUPERINTENDENT REPORT 9.0 CHAIR REPORT Chair Nichol advised that the dinner for the Minister s Excellence in Education Award recipients was being held in Fredericton on November 15, Discussion followed regarding the DEC hosting a dinner for the six ASD-E nominees. Moved by Angela Lawson, seconded by Alan Jones that the DEC host a dinner at Mavericks Steak House honoring the six ASD-E nominees for the Minister s Excellence in Educatin Award on November 24, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. Motion carried Alan Jones stated that it would be beneficial to have presentations at future meetings by High School Principals and Students as had been done in past years. Chair Nichol will look into having a presentation added to November s agenda. Tim Wallace summer was quiet but PSSC meetings will be starting up again soon. There were some concerns regarding bussing that have now been resolved MEMBER UPDATES AS PER POLICY 2.8 COMMUNICATIONS Roberta Brewer she is planning on attending the upcoming PSSC meetings at Havelock School and JMA/Salisbury Middle school. 3

5 ANGLOPHONE EAST SCHOOL DISTRICT SUPERINTENENT S REPORT SEPTEMBER 16, 2014 I am pleased to announce that Arthur (Art) Moore, a teacher at Harrison Trimble High School is the recipient of the Kim Halliday Asset Builder Award. This award is given in recognition to someone who Acts in, builds and changes our community. He is making an impact on his students by helping them rediscover the love for learning and with the HTHS Rugby Team by being a strong role model and making sure the lessons learned on the field will also serve them well later in life. Today students from all eight Anglophone East High Schools travelled to the Moncton Coliseum to participate in John Maxwell s Leadership Conference. John Maxwell is an internationally recognized leadership expert. The conference focused on developing leadership skills in young people and was an educational and inspiring day for all in attendance. PEI native and two time Olympic gold medalist, Heather Moyse was also in attendance to speak to students about her experience as a young leader. The District Health Advisory Committee will be meeting later this week. We have not had an active DHAC for a few years so we are looking forward to getting that committee back in action. The first meeting will see the committee looking at data from recent surveys in NB to attempt to determine the direction for the coming year. On Friday September 12th I attended the official opening of the Woody Hayes Community Field at HTHS. The construction of the field was a community partnership and received funding from local business and citizens, the city of Moncton and the province of NB. The school district leant our support throughout the process. The school football team played their first game at the school in 25 years. I attended a Literacy Forum on September 8th that was sponsored by the Moncton Regional Learning Council and Laubach Literacy NB. The purpose of the forum was to examine the literacy issues facing older teens and adults in NB. I did a collaborative interview with the Superintendent form Francophone Sud, Monique Boudreau. We were talking about the importance of students attending school and the role that parents and educators play in making good attendance a priority. I have also done several other back to school stories and interviews since the start of the school year. 5
