1 The regular meeting of the Germantown Hills School District #69 Board of Education August 10, 2015 was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by its President, Steve Nauman Pledge of Allegiance Members Present: S. Poppen REGOGNITION OF VISITORS, PUBLIC COMMENT AND CORRESPONDENCE Teachers: Therese Miller, Kelly Kauffman and Rob Matthews were present. CONSENT AGENDA Minutes A motion was made by J. Hunt with a second by K. Watkins to approve the Regular Session Minutes of the July 6, 2015 scheduled Board Meeting. Voice Vote - Motion passed. (E. McAllister abstained) Treasurer s Report A motion was made by E. McAllister with a second by L. Edwards to approve the July, 2015 Treasurer s Report. Bills Bills totaling $712, were approved for payment on a motion by K. Watkins with a second by E. McAllister. Roll call vote; Yeas - S. Nauman, K. Watkins, E. McAllister, L. Edwards and J. Hunt Motion approved with 5 votes.

2 Motion to Hire Rob Matthews as Intermediate PE Teacher A motion was made by J. Hunt with a second by L. Edwards to hire Rob Matthews as the Intermediate PE teacher. Roll Call Vote: Yeas S. 3 Motion to Authorize Dan Mair, Superintendent, to Develop the FY16 Budget A motion was made by E. McAllister with a second by K. Watkins to authorize Superintendent Dan Mair to develop the FY16 Budget. Motion to Approve Agreement Regarding Ownership, Use and Release of Instruments of Service with Kenyon & Associates A motion was made by L. Edwards with a second by J. Hunt to approve the agreement regarding ownership, use and release of instruments of service with Kenyon & Associates. Motion to Approve Bread (Bimbo Bakeries) and Milk (Prairie Farms) Bids A motion was made by K. Watkins with a second by L. Edwards to approve Milk and Bread bids as presented. Motion to Hire WCSEA Personnel A motion was made by E. McAllister with a second by J. Hunt to hire the following WCSEA Personnel: Mary Bishop, Margaret Longman, Stephanie Klein-Baxter, Jennifer Drake, Morgan Ryan, Brian Hambleton, Molly Schaidle, Susan Messer, Amy Stimpert, Becky Speerly, Stacey Scott, Ruth Schupp and Carol Hanlon. Principal s Reports Elementary School Report Curriculum/Staff:

4 Synder Village Discussion: On July 14th, I gave an educational talk to interested residents at Snyder Village. I discussed all the changes in education with them and they reminiscenced about their time as educators/and students with the group. They asked many thought-provoking questions and asked if I would come back for another session. Interviews: I have spent the last couple weeks interviewing several candidates for teacher assistant positions (special education) and a Kindergarten position. Phonic s Inservice: On July 23rd, I spent a ½ day with teachers in grades K-3, working through our phonics scope-n-sequence, common language, sight word sequence, and our word marking system. It was a very productive morning. Bus Driver Meeting: Dan, Dave, and I met with bus driver s to go over expectations for the school year and to discuss their questions. We have some very conscientious drivers and they are greatly appreciated for the work they do. Parent Meetings: I have meet with several parents over the summer to discuss possible challenges that their child might face this school year. These meetings have been very helpful as we begin a new school year with new teachers and new expectations. Professional Development Site: Dave and I met with Pat Durley, Assistant Superintendent ROE #53, to construct a PD site for our school district that will assist teachers towards completing their requirements as established by the state. Right at School: I met with LeeAnn Robbins, the Director of Right at School for our district, to go over beginning of the year plans and calendar updates. Kindergarten Orientation: I recently met with the Kindergarten team to go over our upcoming plans for orientation. We will be hosting our orientation night this Wednesday August 13th & 14th: Dan, Dave and I have been discussing plans for our 1st two days with teachers. We are focusing heavily on our ELA LW/RW/WW approach to teaching literacy. We discussed several important benchmarks this summer and have a good plan to roll-out the school year. Literacy Binders: As we are entering our second full-year of literacy development we thought it was crucial to have all teachers on the same page and therefore have compiled a literacy binder complete with important artifacts for teachers based on the work with literacy consultant, Julie Eckberg. Miscellaneous: Summer Crew: I would like to thank Mike, Doug, Angie, Debi, Rina, and all those who work long hours to get the school building and equipment ready for the start of school year. I couldn t do it without them and I greatly appreciate their attention to detail especially as the school year draws closer. Jr. High School Report Building and Grounds The Summer Maintenance Team continues to work hard to have everything ready for the coming school year. Dan and I met with the PE teachers and Doug Cupples to determine the best placement for the playground equipment to prepare for the coming addition. Doug Cupples and the maintenance crew have resurfaced the softball diamond and added dirt to a troublesome low spot in the outfield to help with drainage issues. These

5 should make things better until we can do some more major work on the field after the softball season. Curriculum/Staff I met with the 6th grade team on July 29th to plan out our new 6th Grade Orientation Night which will take place on August 12th from 6-7:30 pm. This will help answer questions and ease the transition into Jr High for both students and parents. Dan, Shelli and I have continued to meet and discuss goals and make plans for the upcoming school year. On August 4th I met with the special education team to finalize our plans for implementing RTI at the Jr High level this year. We have brought back a 20 minute time slot during the day to be able to give consistent academic interventions to those students who require an extra boost in reading and math. This time will allow us to teach behavior skills to those students who made need it (organizational, homework completion, time management, etc ). On August 7th the administrative team attended the Regional Office of Education s Back to School Breakfast Meeting at the Countryside banquet Facility in Washington, IL. On August 7th the administrative team also attended a meeting in Bloomington, IL to hear about an upcoming class that will be offered in the area of Balanced Literacy. Discipline/Attendance/Enrollment Current Attendance: 320 students! 6th Grade: 108, 7th Grade: 105, 8th Grade: 107 We had one family move to Germantown Hills that will home schooling this year and requested to participate in extra-curricular activities. This request was denied due to Board Policy. Miscellaneous I met with Sean O Laughlin from MTHS to discuss the upcoming school year and opportunities to get our staff s together along with other feeder schools to discuss curriculum throughout the school year during our late start days. The softball and baseball teams have been selected and have begun preparations for the upcoming season. Games begin this coming Saturday! Construction Project Update Mr. Mair updated the board on the latest developments of the construction project. FY 2015 Budget Presentation Mr. Mair presented a look at all parts of the school budget. Enrollment Numbers The administration updated the board with the latest enrollment numbers. Teacher/Staff Resignations The following staff members have resigned: Becky Balk bus driver, Darci Ohl Intermediate Aide, Natalie Carr Elementary Aide and Nicole Simkins teacher. Paperless Board Meetings Mr. Mair and the board discussed having paperless school board meetings. Chromebooks would be purchased for each board member and all board items would be posted to Google drive.

6 Activity Account Journal Mr. Mair presented the updated Activity Account Journal. OTHER BUSINESS BY BOARD MEMBERS OR ADMINISTRATION Mr. Mair invited the board to attend the Opening In-Service Breakfast on August 13 th at 7:30 am. K. Watkins mentioned the ability to get a Medicaid reimbursement for Special Ed. Early Intervention students. ADJOURNMENT A motion was made by J. Hunt with a second by K.
