1 Specialist Leaders in Education System leadership

2 Since 2011, over 2,500 SLEs have been designated, with the aim to recruit every year, building up to 5,000 by Specialist Leader In Education Status is appointed / awarded through the teaching school.

3 Who can become a specialist leader of education? To become a specialist leader of education (SLE), you will need to hold a middle or senior leadership role below the headteacher in a school and have a specialism that is included in the approved list. Meet the eligibility criteria.

4 AREAS OF EXPERTISE management Academies and academy transition Leadership of continuing professional development (CPD) School business management and financial management Leadership of curriculum Pupil achievement Early years English Geography History Information and communication technology (ICT) Maths Modern foreign languages (MFL) Music Phonics Physical education (PE) Religious education (RE) Science Special educational needs (SEN) Support for the most able pupils Quality of teaching Initial teacher training (ITT) and newly qualified teacher (NQT) development Behaviour and discipline / attendance

5 Although you need to be an outstanding leader, you do not need to come from an outstanding school or from a school that is part of a teaching school alliance as long as your school has the capacity to release you for outreach work. Definition of middle or senior leadership varies it is recognised that roles and responsibilities differ and that routes to leadership are not always straightforward. Your head- teacher will, therefore, be asked to confirm that you hold an appropriate role.

6 Experience SLEs will: be outstanding middle or senior leaders with at least two years' experience and a first class knowledge in a particular field of expertise have a minimum of two years' experience in a leadership role within a school or academy. ( this includes middle leadership) SLEs will have: a successful track record, supported by substantial impact evidence, of working effectively within their own school and/or across a group of schools, or working with a range of leaders within a single school evidence of successfully using coaching and/or facilitation skills to bring about sustainable improvements

7 Applicants may also provide supporting evidence gained from completing leadership development opportunities such as the National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership (NPQSL), the National Professional Qualification for Middle Leadership (NPQML) or the SSAT lead practitioner accreditation. The National Professional Qualification for Middle Leadership (NPQML) is a course being offered presently which you can apply to study. It is at Masters level and there are bursaries for a lot of the cost.

8 SLEs will have: - excellent communication and interpersonal skills. - the ability to utilise high levels of emotional intelligence to work sensitively and collaboratively with peer colleagues. - an understanding of what constitutes 'outstanding' in their field of expertise and the ability and confidence to articulate this. - an appreciation of how their specialism and skills can contribute to the wider school improvement agenda. - an analytical approach in identifying the needs and ability to prioritise accordingly, including the ability to set and establish new and innovative working practices. - the ability to grow leadership capacity in others - a commitment and capacity to outreach work. - approval from their head - teacher.

9 What next? - New round opens in May Applications will be to National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) You will need to register and tick that your application is through Lead Learning Forward Teaching School Alliance.. - Interview process through the teaching School to accredit status. - Initial NCTL 1 day induction training. - Opportunities to participate in School to School support and ITT training whilst developing further skills and becoming a network group.
