4 1.0 Workshop Overview The Self and Peer Assessment tool enables students to review and evaluate work submitted by themselves or their peers. Using criteria specified by the instructor and optional sample responses, students can assign points and provide feedback on submitted assignments. Self and Peer Assessments can help distribute the workload and ensure that students receive feedback from several individuals. Students also benefit from the analytical experience of evaluating submissions against defined criteria. The evaluation process itself often deepens their comprehension of the subject and can provide valuable insights into their own efforts Blackboard Inc Self and Peer Assessment

5 ROADMAP 2.0 Build Self and Peer Assessments: Create the assessment Create the assessment framework. Add questions Add at least one text-based question to the assessment. 6 2.0 Build Self and Peer Assessments A Self and Peer Assessment includes the following: At least one question At least one criterion for each question, which students will use when evaluating responses The Self and Peer Assessment tool is completely separate from the Test and Assignment tools. 7 The Process We will take a look at the Self and Peer Assessment process from both the instructor and student perspectives. The Instructor Experience As an instructor, you will complete two distinct activities when using Self and Peer Assessments: 1. You will create the assessment. 2. Once the assessment process is underway, you will likely want to view the submissions, the evaluations, and the overall results. When the evaluation period has ended, you can send the results to the Grade Center. The Student Experience Students will also complete two distinct activities: 1. They will complete the assessment, answering each question based on the provided criteria. 2. They will evaluate assessment submissions. The assignment will specify how many submissions they are expected to evaluate, and whether they will evaluate their own work Blackboard Inc Self and Peer Assessment

8 Building Self and Peer Assessments: An Overview Assessments are created within a Content Area or learning module. To create a new assessment, you will complete three basic steps: 1. Create the assessment framework, specifying the title, instructions, and dates. When you create an assessment, a column is automatically added to the Grade Center. 2. Add one or more questions to the assessment. 3. Add one or more criteria to each question. We will take a look at each of these steps in more detail on the following pages. 9 Creating the Assessment The first step in building a Self and Peer Assessment is creating the actual assessment item. In this step, you will indicate the assessment title, the instructions, and three unique date ranges. The following table explains the date ranges. Date range Display After/Until What students can do view the assessment item Submission Start/End submit their assessment responses Evaluation Start/End complete peer or self evaluations NOTE: The evaluation period cannot start until the submission period ends. QUICK STEPS: creating the assessment 1. From a Content Area, click Create Assessment on the Action Bar to access the drop-down list. 2. Click Self and Peer Assessment. 3. Enter the assessment Name, Instructions, and Submission and Evaluation Dates. 4. Specify whether to Allow Anonymous Evaluation, Allow Self Evaluation, and whether to Show Evaluation Results to Submitter. 5. Enter the Number of Submissions to Evaluate. 6. 11 Build Self and Peer Assessments: Creating the Assessment When creating an assessment, you can specify a number of options unique to the Self and Peer Assessment tool as described in the following table. Option Allow Anonymous Evaluation When to use it Do not want students to know whose work they are evaluating Allow Self Evaluation Want students to evaluate their own submissions NOTE: Self evaluations do not count toward the Number of Submissions to Evaluate Show Evaluation Results to Submitter Want students to view their evaluation results, including point values and feedback Enter 0 in the Number of Submissions to Evaluate field Want students to only assess themselves, and not their peers 2010 Blackboard Inc Self and Peer Assessment

12 Adding Questions The next step is to add at least one question to the assessment. Questions can be simple or complex. Examples: What year did Queen Elizabeth I die? In your own words, define the term square root. Explain why Napoleon s armies were defeated at the battle of Waterloo. All questions are text-based; the tool does not support multiple question types, such as multiple choice or matching. You can also provide a model response for the question. Students do not see the model response when they are completing the assessment, but they will see it during the evaluation period. They can compare the answer they are evaluating with the model response. QUICK STEPS: adding questions to a self and peer assessment 1. On the Assessment Canvas page, click Create Question on the Action Bar. 2. On the Add Question page, enter the Question Text, and optionally, enter the Model Response. 3. Click Submit. 13 Adding Criteria to a Question Each question must contain at least one criterion students can use when evaluating responses to the question. You must assign a point value for each criterion. Knowledge-level questions may only contain one criterion, such as: Did the answer equal 128? More complex questions requiring higher-level responses may include multiple criteria. For example, the following criteria can be added to an essay question: Does the response place the issue within the broader context of the subject? Is the response well organized and clearly laid out? Was the response proofread carefully? QUICK STEPS: adding criteria to a question 1. On the Assessment Canvas page, click the question s Action Link to access the contextual menu and click Criteria. 2. On the Add/Edit Criteria page, click Create Criteria on the Action Bar. 3. On the Add Criteria page, enter the criteria information and the number of possible points. 4. For Assign Points, select the radio node for All or Nothing or Partial Credit. 5. For Allow Feedback to User, select the radio node for Yes or No. 6. Click Submit. TIP: To save time, you can add existing criteria to a question. Points can then be awarded based on the length of the answer. For example, an instructor can specify the maximum word count of an answer must be 200 words, and points will be awarded if the answer is within 20 words of this count Blackboard Inc Self and Peer Assessment

17 Previewing the Assessment You can preview the assessment to view it as your students will see it. From the Preview drop-down list available on the Assessment Canvas page, select Submission or Evaluation. 19 The Student Experience Once the assessment is available, students will access it from a Content Area or learning module. During the submission period, students click the View/Complete Assessment link to answer questions and submit their assessments. Figure 2.1 Later, during the evaluation period, students use the same link to evaluate their peers submissions. If self-evaluation is selected, they will see their own submissions first. 22 Instructor Process At various points in the assessment process, you may need to view student submissions, evaluations, or the overall results. You can access these results from the Self and Peer Assessment link, under Course Tools. Although they contain unique information, each page includes a list of student names. Next to each name, you can click View or Download. You also have the option to Download All. QUICK STEPS: viewing assessment submissions, evaluations, or results 1. On the Control Panel, expand Course Tools and select Self and Peer Assessment. 2. On the Self and Peer Assessment page, from the contextual menu of the assessment, select View Submissions, View Evaluations, or View Results. Figure Blackboard Inc Self and Peer Assessment

24 Sending Grades to the Grade Center From the Results page, you can also transfer the average score to the Grade Center. QUICK STEPS: sending grades to the Grade Center 1. On the Control Panel, expand Course Tools and select Self and Peer Assessment. 2. On the Self and Peer Assessment page, from the contextual menu of the assessment, select View Results. 3. On the Results page, click Send Results to Grade Center on the Action Bar. Figure 2 All evaluation scores, including self-evaluations, will be included when the assignment score is calculated.
