16 30 GOLDBECK Solar Glossary Glossary GOLDBECK Solar 31 0 V Glossary We use plain language! 0 V AC An alternating current of electricity is produced by a power inverter from a direct current. This conversion of the electrical current is necessary before the electricity can be fed into the electrical grid. Feed-in Tariff (EEG in Germany) A law for the preference of renewable energy, making it an obligation of energy providers to use renewable energy sources and guarantee that a feed-in tariff be paid for a period (typically) of 20 years. Photovoltaic Generating electrical current from solar energy. In solar cells, mostly made from silicon, a direct current of electricity is produced from sunlight. Benefits from solar energy include clean and ecological energy production and the possibility for independence from conventional utilities and power companies. Aerodynamic System Through intelligent engineering, an aerodynamic system uses a suction effect to secure the substructure of a solar panel to a rooftop, without additional work that affects the waterproofing of the roof. Fire Protection Even under low light levels, high DC voltage can exist. It is important that solar projects are secured in the event of fire such that they can be separated from the electrical grid. Solar developments can be cut from the grid by an accessible fire department shut-off switch. As such, there would be no further danger from live electrical cables. Positive or Plus Sorting A positive or plus sorting with solar modules means that all modules will deliver electricity that always meets or exceeds the capacity shown on its data sheet. This results in a higher output from the solar project. Alignment (Azimuth) In order to efficiently use irradiation from the sun, solar modules are aligned so that the most economical electrical output possible is achieved. This alignment is not always directed to the south; under specific project conditions the best alignment can be to the east or west. Inclination Angle The inclination angle specifies at what angle modules should be inclined from the horizontal plane. The modules can be inclined from 5 to 30. The optimal operating efficiency is critical to choosing the best angle. Modules employed in a flat position make better use of a roof or open land area and can often be the best choice. Power Inverter Solar modules produce direct current electricity that can be used directly on site by a business consumer. When the electricity is to be supplied to the power grid, it must first be converted to alternating current electricity by a power inverter. kwp kwh Conversions kwp Acronym for kilowatt peak, the nominal power kwh Acronym for kilowatt hour, the output 1 kwh 1,000 watt over a one hour timeframe Module A solar module consists of a series of interconnected solar cells embedded between a glass front and a watertight backing, making the cells weatherproof. Self-Consumption Producers that generate electricity from solar power projects can not only supply the electrical grid but also economically use the electricity on site. Through a demand-adapted configuration of the solar project, independence from conventional energy utilities can be achieved. Peak Output The maximum output of a standard solar generator is measured in kilowatts and specified as kwp (kilowatt peak). Standard test conditions STC): solar irradiation from 1,000 W/m² (in Germany at midday on a beautiful summer day), 25 C module temperature and standard atmosphere (AM 1,5). Shadow Angle The shadow angle describes the point at which a row of modules shades the row of modules located behind it. A small shadow angle marginally increases the relative solar output, whereas a larger shadow angle allows a better utilization of a rooftop or other area.
