Hardware Requirements IZ-DOC-X Hardware Requirements This section lists hardware requirements for the RTX 2011 with Service Pack 1 release. HAL Type To use the RTX Subsystem, your system must support one of the following HAL types: Windows Device Manager Standard PC Registry Resource Map PC Compatible EISA/ISA HAL Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC ACPI Compatible EISA/ISA HAL ACPI Uniprocessor PC ACPI Multiprocessor PC ACPI x86-based PC Supported Network Adapters ACPI APIC Platform UP ACPI APIC Platform MP ACPI x86 Platform The RTX 2011 with Service Pack 1 release provides support for a number of network adapters. For the most up-to-date list, click the link titled Download the RTX Supported Network Interface Cards PDF file on this web site: Hardware Considerations Some hardware configurations are not supported by RTX installations. When RTX can detect these unsupported configurations they are indicated with a popup error message. Although RTX runs on most x86 platforms, unique attributes of some processors require special consideration before selecting them as a target system. For a comprehensive list of approved and supported hardware, see the Microsoft Windows Logo Program web page: Problems with Microsoft WinDbg on AMD Opteron Dual-core AMD64 hardware When using Windows versions prior to Windows Vista on AMD Opteron Dual-core AMD64 hardware, the system may exhibit unstable behavior. This behavior can be seen when trying to use Windows WinDbg to break into and step through Windows drivers due to incorrect context registers. IntervalZero recommends using Windows 7 or Windows Vista as your base OS when using one of these AMD systems. On Dell Latitude D420 with Core Duo U2500 CPU systems, the RTSS subsystem will suffer a large decrease in performance if the following conditions exist: 5

IZ-DOC-X Hardware Requirements Intel SpeedStep is enabled. Prevent Windows idle state is unchecked on the Hardware tab in the RTX Properties control panel. Latency causing devices are not disabled. PCI express video controllers can cause jitter (large latencies) within an RTX application (3228). Workarounds for this problem are to: Select /BASEVIDEO in the boot.ini to use standard VGA display driver, or Disable all DirectDraw and Direct3D acceleration in Display Control Panel. Click the Settings tab, then Advanced, then Troubleshoot. The NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE video driver causes long latencies on Vista systems and should be disabled (5837). The properties are: Driver file: nvlddmkm.sys Driver version: Date: This problem is also seen on Windows 7 systems which use both the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE card and the NVIDIA Quadro FX1700 card with properties (1220): Driver file: nvlddmkm.sys Driver version: Date: Note: If you disable this video driver using the RTX control panel, your display turns black and you must reboot. If you remove the driver using the Windows control panel, no reboot is required. On certain Dell dual-processor systems with the Intel Xeon chip sets (for example, Dell 650, Dell 670), the maximum timer delivery latency for a periodic RTX timer in Dedicated Mode is doubled under intensive video activities. Investigation results show that the high latency is inherited from the hardware. 6

Software Requirements IZ-DOC-X Software Requirements This section lists software requirements for the RTX 2011 with Service Pack 1 release. Operating System Requirements The RTX 2011 with Service Pack 1 Runtime and SDK are supported on the 32-bit configurations listed in the table below. The RTX 2011 with Service Pack 1 SDK can be installed on a 64-bit Windows system, and that system can be used for development and to host the debugging of a target machine. However, you cannot install the Runtime Subsystem, as it is not supported on a 64-bit operating system. Windows XP Professional with SP3 Uniprocessor PIC Uniprocessor APIC Multi-processor Yes Yes Yes Windows XP Embedded Yes 3 Yes 3 Yes 3 Windows Server 2003 with no SP Windows Server 2003 with SP1 Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Windows Server 2003 R2 Yes Yes Yes Windows Server 2003 with SP2 No 1,2 No 1,2 Yes 1 Vista with no SP No Yes Yes Vista with SP1 No Yes Yes Vista with SP2 No Yes Yes Windows Embedded Standard 2009 No Yes 3 Yes 3 Windows 7 with no SP No Yes Yes Windows 7 with SP1 No Yes Yes Windows Embedded Standard 7 No Yes 4 Yes 4 1 Windows Server 2003 SP2 supports only dedicated environments. It does not support shared environments. 2 RTX cannot be installed on uniprocessor machines running Windows Server 2003 SP2. 3 Embedded system must support MSI installation to allow RTX to be installed. Otherwise, the RTX Embedded Runtime must be used. 7

IZ-DOC-X Software Requirements 4 Windows Embedded Standard 7 system must support MSI installation to allow RTX to be installed. For the most up-to-date list, click the link titled Download the RTX Operating System Compatibility Matrix PDF file on the web site Note: RTX Windows XP Embedded and Windows Embedded Standard 2009 support, through Microsoft Windows Embedded Studio, is provided in a separate installer. Retired Operating System Support Starting with RTX 2009, IntervalZero discontinued RTX support for Windows Microsoft Visual Studio Requirements (SDK Only) The RTX 2011 SDK requires that you have Microsoft Visual Studio 2010, Visual Studio 2008 or Visual Studio 2005 installed if you wish to build or debug RTX programs with the Visual Studio IDE. Beginning with RTX 2011, IntervalZero has discontinued support for Visual Studio.NET Administrator Privileges Administrator privileges are required for installing, uninstalling, and using the RTX 2011 with Service Pack 1 product. If you are installing on a Windows 7 or Vista system with User Account Control activated, your application will not be run with your full permissions unless you choose to run them as an administrator. RTX avoids this problem by providing a User Account Control Override service. If you do not want to override this Windows functionality you can disable it by doing following: During the RTX installation you will have the option to deselect the RTX User Account Control Override Service. If you do not install, or if you disable the RTX User Account Control Override service, non-administrative users will not be allowed to run RTSS applications. 8

Installation Warnings IZ-DOC-X Installation Warnings Depending upon your system configuration, you may encounter installation warnings. They can be ignored, as explained below, and the installation should still proceed successfully. "Setup was unable to interface with the power management service. Please note that an RTX-Compatible power configuration will not be created. See the RTX Installation Guide for detail on the RTX Recommended Power State." If the power management feature is not a part of your Windows 7-Based Windows Embedded Standard 7 target image, then the installer will not be able to implement the RTX Recommended Power State. This should not affect functionality as the preferred power state for RTX is to have all power management features disabled. "Could not register type library for C:\Program Files\IntervalZero\RTX\ tools\platformevaluator\cfx4032.ocx. Contact your support personnel." On some Windows Embedded Standard systems, a warning could appear during installation noting that the ActiveX control used for Platform Evaluator could not be registered. This warning can be avoided by de-selecting the Platform Evaluator feature from the Custom Setup selections or it can be ignored. 9

When you are prompted, click Yes to reboot your computer. If you have a multiprocessor machine, choose the boot configuration at system startup: [Operating System] - RTX Dedicated Note: The RTX Properties control panel will not provide completely accurate information until you reboot your system. Modifications to the Boot Configuration On multiprocessor (MP) systems, the RTX 2011 with Service Pack 1 installation process modifies the boot configuration to contain an additional RTX Dedicated option. It does this by first checking to see how many processors are known to the operating system. If it detects more than one processor, it creates a new boot configuration for RTX Dedicated, based on the current configuration. If the installation determines that processor clustering is enabled (either because there are more than eight processors, or because a system with eight or fewer processors has hardware enforced clustering) then an initial dedicated configuration will assign four processors (the maximum allowable) to Windows and the rest to RTX. If the installation determines that more than one processor is present in the system, but clustering is not enabled, then an initial dedicated configuration will assign one processor to RTX and the remaining processors to Windows. On boot up, you must select the Microsoft [Windows Version] - RTX Dedicated configuration. For example, Microsoft Windows XP Professional - RTX Dedicated. If you boot into another configuration and attempt to use RTX, you will encounter a popup warning that RTX is not configured for the current configuration. The boot configuration modifications that occur depend upon the type of operating system that you are running (Windows 7, Vista or XP) and the state of the current boot configuration. On a uniprocessor system, the only valid configuration is Shared, with 1 RTSS Processor and 1 RTX processor. 13

IZ-DOC-X Installing RTX 2011 with Service Pack 1 On a multiprocessor system without clustering, Shared or Dedicated may be specified. If using a shared configuration, there can only be 1 RTSS processor. The number of Windows processors can be anywhere between 1 and the number of cores on the system. In Dedicated mode, the number of Windows processors and RTSS processors must not exceed the number of cores on the system. RTSS processors must not exceed the number licensed. On a multiprocessor machine with clustering, only Dedicated mode is supported. The number of Windows processors must be between 1 and 4. Since Windows and RTSS can t share a cluster, the number of RTSS processors cannot exceed the total number of processors minus 4. RTSS processors must not exceed the number licensed. Notes: RTX configuration is setup via the RTX Control Panel or RTX Properties API and must not be modified or removed. When upgrading from RTX 2009, an extra boot configuration line may be created. Viewing the Release Notes after Installation Each component has release notes installed as part of its product and can be accessed by selecting IntervalZero > RTX 2011 > RTX Documentation and then Release Notes from the Start menu. 14

IZ-DOC-X Appendix A: Licensing Appendix A: Licensing When a purchase order is processed, a Purchase Authentication Code (PAC) is assigned to each product license purchase. The list of PACs is then sent in an that describes how to generate your per-machine license key from the IntervalZero Web site. During the installation of a per-machine RTX license, you must have a connection to our Web site to generate a license key specific to the product Purchase Authentication Code (PAC) and machine. Site/OEM licensing is to be used by companies that distribute IntervalZero software bundled with their own software, or those who purchase a site license for their organization. Installation via site/oem licensing does not require an Internet connection to the IntervalZero website. The following section discusses this product licensing methodology. Key Retrieval Installing RTX 2011 with Service Pack 1 with a per-machine license requires three pieces of information: Purchase Authentication Code (PAC) - Provided by IntervalZero after an order is processed. The PAC indicates that a product license has been purchased. It serves as a token associated with each product license purchase. Machine Information - Generated at the time of installation by the product installation, based on system information. License Key - Machine-specific license key derived from the Purchase Authentication Code and the system specific machine information. The license key is generated for you by IntervalZero. The RTX per-machine license key can be obtained from IntervalZero in two ways: Automatic License Key Generation or Manual License Generation Automatic License Key Generation If the target system is connected to the Internet, then automatic key generation is possible. The product installation extracts machine information and automatically accesses the IntervalZero Web site to get the License Key. 20

Appendix A: Licensing IZ-DOC-X You are prompted for your contact information and the Purchase Authentication Code at the IntervalZero Web site. The license key is derived from the Purchase Authentication Code. This per-machine license key is then used to complete the installation of the RTX 2011 with Service Pack 1 product. You will also receive a copy of the License Key transaction in an containing your contact information, Purchase Authentication Code, the machine information, and the License Key. Save this information as it may be needed if the product is reinstalled or relocated. Manual License Key Generation If the system is not connected to the Internet, automatic key generation is not possible and key generation must be done manually. The product installation extracts machine information and displays the information that will be required to generate a license key. You must go to the following IntervalZero web site: For a purchased edition, license key generation can be done at: For an evaluation edition, license key generation can be done at: When prompted, enter the requested Purchase Authentication Code, Machine ID and Address. You will receive the License Key in a browser window; you are also sent an listing your contact information, Purchase Authentication Code, machine information and the License Key. The License Key can then be entered manually during the product installation. Product Relocation If you must move the product installation to another system for any reason (for example, replacing a development system, a machine is unavailable because it needs repair, and so on), you may relocate your software by generating a replacement License Key. To request a "Replacement License" you must contact IntervalZero Sales. 21
