We at DINAX have been producing optimised professional level output on digital based inkjet printing systems since Until the public presentation of Mirage in 2008, there were basically two ways of printing on these devices; using the printer driver or a raster image processor (RIP). The printer manufacturer usually provides free of charge drivers, if handled correctly they provide suitable results. But printer drivers are too limited in their functionality and complex to operate. So-called user based operational errors are inevitable. Conventional RIPs are usually expensive to cost-justify on price and performance, so the RIP manufacturers simply added more functions, making the output procedure even more complex. In addition, the RIP in many cases does not make use of the enormous potential the printer offers in terms of image sharpness and color gamut. Most RIP s use proprietary raster algorithms and are optimised for the CMYK color gamut. That s not very surprising when one considers that RIPs were originally invented to run a digital offset printing press or for the simulation of low gamut print results of an analog offset press (raster simulation/color space). 3 For me Mirage is my printer s operating system I am really, really picky, and I am more demanding than most I think for what I need from a printer. I live the world of fine art landscape and nature photography, as well as reportage and Hollywood portrait photography. I need a way to squeeze every pico-liter of color and resolution out my Epson printers (I use the 4900 and 9900) and the Mirage RIP gives me true 2880dpi resolution and when combined with a printer/paper specific profile the finest image that can be made. I also need to have a RIP that once set up is fire and forget. The Mirage RIP is the best of all worlds and it is what I go to first when it is time to make a print. I have been using the Mirage RIP for several years now and find it to be an excellent printing solution for all of my printing needs both commercial and fine art. Particularly in the fine art area, where precise control of color, consistency and ease of workflow are interdependent and extremely important. I can make a print today and be assured that future prints will be essentially identical. It runs all of my Epson printers from the 9900 to the R3000 and the setup is quick and easy. With the PRO-Extension I can create excellent profiles with the Epson Spectroproofer that come very close to those I create with a much more complicated and time consuming color management solution. I can press a button, go out for a cappuccino and when I return the profile is in the proper directory and I am ready to print.
