printer specs
Supported Applications: Adobe Acrobat Adobe Illustrator Adobe Indesign Quark Xpress Adobe Photoshop Microsoft Word Microsoft Publisher Microsoft Excel Microsoft Powerpoint Supported File Formats: JPEG TIFF PSD PDF (Note: See page 8 for proper specs.) EPS Bitmap *** Please do not convert Illustrator files (vector gaphics) to a Photoshop (pixel based) image. Vector based images have the best quality output when left as is. Artwork Preparation: Fonts Please supply all fonts used for the project. This includes printer and screen fonts. For more information on how to do this, see File Packaging on page. Please do not outine fonts. Include the active font files with your document. Outlined fonts can make the file size unnecessarily large and sometimes produces jagged type. Color Images All images should be CMYK. If they are not, we can change them for you. Please be aware, however, that this may cause slight color shifts and additional time in the prepress department. For more information, see Color Settings on page 8. Please DO NOT include embedded color profiles.. When saving an image in Photoshop, go to File Save As 2. In the Save As dialogue box, under Color, the last check box reads, Embed Color Profile:... Make sure this box is UNCHECKED. 2 REP Commerical Printing
Please do not copy an image from another program and paste into InDesign. See Copied Images on page 8. Minimum resolution of 00 dpi. Include layered file if available. When placing a pixel based image in another application such as InDesign, please do not use at more than 00% of the actual image size. Colors Specify as SPOT or PROCESS in the file. If spot, please be sure that the spot color indicated in the file is the one you would like printed, and use only one color space (i.e. CV, CVU, etc.) Remove all unused spot colors from the document. Hard Copy A printed copy or pdf (that has been looked over and approved by the customer) of the final piece to be printed must accompany all digital files supplied. If this is not provided, Reading Eagle Press has no way of verifying what the actual piece should look like, and additional time in prepress may be incurred. File Packaging It is recommended to perform a Collect for Output before submitting files to Reading Eagle Press. This function is available in both InDesign and QuarkXPress. INDESIGN Step : Go to File Package REP Commerical Printing
File Packaging continued... Step 2: Ensure that all fonts are included. There should be no Embedded or Incomplete fonts. ** WARNING: Fonts that are not active, and images that are not linked or are embedded will not be packaged. Step : Ensure that all links are included. There should be no Modified or Missing images. No images should have an RGB color space. 4 REP Commerical Printing
Step 4: Ensure that all inks are correct. If it is a 4 color process job, there should be Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. If there are any spot colors, they should be listed here (each spot color should be listed only once.). (This is a 4 color job, therefore, there are 4 process inks, and no spot inks.) Step 5: Once you are finished checking your file for accuracy, hit Package. Step 6: Once you ve clicked Package, a new dialogue box will appear entitled, Create Package Folder. This will save a folder with all your packaged files in it wherever you direct it on your computer. Please make sure that the first three boxes remain checked. Keep these checked. REP Commerical Printing 5
QUARKXPRESS Step : Go to Utilities Usage Step 2: Ensure that all fonts used in the document are active on your computer. Fonts that are not active will have { } around them, as seen below. Notice the { } marks. This font is not active. Step : Under pictures, ensure that all image files are linked. The highlighted link below is missing. Click on Update to find the file on your computer and relink it. 6 REP Commerical Printing
Step 4: Also check that all image files are up-to-date. The highlighted link below has been modified. Click on Update to use the newest version. ** WARNING: Fonts that are not active, and images that are missing or modified will not be packaged. Step 5: Go to File Collect for Output Step 6: Collect everything for output. All of your files will be placed in a separate folder wherever you determine on your computer. Keep these checked. REP Commerical Printing 7
Additional Guidelines Create document size to actual trim size of document. /8 bleed is required for all pages that bleed, which stretches beyond the trim size of the document. Keep text away from edge of document. Copied images When working in InDesign, it is important to never copy an image from another program and paste it into InDesign. This creates a screen resolution image that is unsuitable for printing. Instead, go to File Place and choose the image off of your computer. This also keeps the size of your document manageable. Then, just make sure to package everything in one folder for printing so all of your high resolution images can be used for printing, or export as a high resolution pdf. Supported media types Smaller files, such as text-only documents, can be ed to your customer service representative. CD DVD Upload via FTP: go to Flash Drive Color settings Below is a guide of how to change your color settings to CMYK. InDesign Go to Edit Color Settings in the menu running along the top of the screen Change the Settings to: Emulate Adobe InDesign 2.0 CMS Off. QuarkXPress Go to QuarkXPress Preferences in the menu running along the top of the screen. Go to Color Manager in the options along the left of the dialogue box, and make the Source Setup: QuarkXPress 7.0 Default. Photoshop Go to Image Color Mode in the menu running along the top of the screen. A check mark appears beside the current color mode. Check CMYK. Illustrator Go to File Document Color Mode in the menu running along the top of the screen. A check mark appears beside the current color mode. Check CMYK. 8 REP Commerical Printing
DOCUMENT SETUP Below is a sample of how to properly set up a document, including bleeds and margins. When creating a new document, specify the paper size (the size of the final trimmed piece), the margin size (the area that text should not go beyond, usually 0.25"), and the bleed size, if any. Bleed will be trimmed off after the piece is printed. This is what your document will look like once you hit OK. The outermost line is your bleed box. Anything that you want to bleed should extend to the edge of this box. It will be trimmed off during the finishing process. The black line is your trim box. This is the actual paper size, and the size of the final piece. The innermost line is your margin. Anything you do not want to get cut off should stay within this box. REP Commerical Printing 9
PDF SETTINGS Step : Go to File Export Step 2: Type file name in the Save As box (highlighted in yellow). Your new pdf file will be placed wherever you determine on your computer. Step : Hit Save. Step 4: In the General settings (highlighted in blue), ensure that all of the highlighted areas match what is on your screen. 0 REP Commerical Printing
Step 5: Next is the Compression settings. Ensure that all of the same boxes are checked. Again, match your onscreen settings to the highlighted settings. Step 6: Click on Marks and Bleeds. ensure that all of the same boxes are checked. In Marks, click crop marks only, and offset them 0.25 in. In Bleed and Slug, put a bleed of 0.25 in. all around. REP Commerical Printing
PDF Settings continued... Step 7: In Output, ensure that No Color Conversion is selected. Step 8: Click on Ink Manager. The dialogue box below will appear. Step 9: Ensure all the inks you want used to print your piece are listed here. This sample is a four color process job, so all four colors are listed. If you are printing something with spot color, the spot color should be listed with the process colors with a symbol to the left of the name. Below is a sample of how a spot color would appear in the Inks list. If there are spot colors listed and your job is to be four color process, just check the box highlighted in yellow. Hit OK. This is how a spot color appears in the Inks list. If you want to change an individual spot color to process, just click on the box so it becomes. 2 REP Commerical Printing
Step 0: In Advanced, ensure that all of the same boxes are checked. Again, match your on-screen settings to the highlighted settings. You do not need to do anything in Security or Summary. Step : Hit Export. Your pdf file has now been saved. PDF SETTINGS in other programs If you are using a program other than InDesign (Quark, Microsoft Word, etc.) to set up your files, please do not create a pdf. Instead, send all native files to Reading Eagle Press. Because these programs are not made by Adobe, they do not create reliable pdfs. REP Commerical Printing
