5 Initiatives IT enabled monitoring and Information collection Surveillance Cameras 179 cameras across various junctions of the city Centrally controlled from traffic management center using 4 Mbps leased lines with an IP based network Feeds stored in a 24 terra byte high-end storage for a 40 day period Malfunctioning of devices automatically reported and tracked Used for statistical analysis and enforcement using Video Analytics

6 Use of GIS for evaluating traffic congestion Usage of GPS data gathered from BMTC busses for identifying traffic congestion at various roads of the city. Usage of tele-density statistics of mobile phone usage for identify traffic volumes at various junctions.

8 Initiatives Intelligent transportation Automated Signaling Systems 340 signals operational, shortly the number to increase to 370 Signals centrally controlled from traffic management center using 4 Mbps & 512 Kbps leased lines with an IP based network 120 vehicle actuated signals High-end software application providing sophisticated GUI for monitoring and managing of signals Latest extended desktop environment at TMC for managing traffic signal operation Malfunctioning of signals automatically reported and tracked

10 Intelligent transportation systems Vehicle Actuation Inductive loops hidden below road surface check for vehicle passing over them, incase no vehicle passes for 4 seconds the corresponding signal turns red. Helps in fully utilizing green time Also being used virtual loops with the help of CC TV cameras Signal Progression Provides continuous movement of vehicles and/or minimize the delay along an arterial or throughout a network of major streets Involves coordination among the signal controllers Total 24 traffic corridors to implement signal progression Area Traffic Control System A way of monitoring, operating and controlling traffic lights through a computer The computer uses information gathered from sensors in the road to decide whether traffic is getting heavy or congested on a particular road. When it does, the computer changes the timing of traffic lights to let the traffic move more freely, so reducing hold-ups. Total 14 traffic corridors to implement ATC. 15 Initiatives Traffic dissemination system Variable messaging system 20 systems around the Bangalore city Online connectivity with traffic management center Used for informing citizens about diversions, road incidents, speed restrictions, safety messages, etc. Parking information system Real time collection of statuses of available parking lots in the city online and making it available to motorists through SMS, Internet & VMS FM Channels FM Radio Jockey collect the traffic congestion information and broadcasts directly from TMC. SMS based dissemination The People who have subscribed to the Traffic Alert will receive SMS regarding the Junctions that are having Traffic congestion. Also the subscribers will be informed about any procession, VIP movements, Cricket Match in Bangalore, any vehicle off the road etc., so that the people can avoid going to those place.
