2 Nursing Contact Hours North Arkansas Partnership for Health Education (NAPHE) is an Approved Provider of continuing nursing education by South Central Accreditation Program, (SCAP), an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. Contact Hours: 2.75 PRECON A: Pharmacology Update 2.75 PRECON B: Legal Issues in Wound Care MAIN CONFERENCE (2 days main conference) Successful Completion: You must be present no later than 5 minutes after the start of the educational activity and attend the entire day s program. Each day can be attended separately. The evaluation survey is completed online. Be sure your is legible and included on the registration information. Your electronic CE certificate can be printed immediately after you complete the online evaluation. This will be addressed during the planning and implementation phases of this educational activity. Purpose: The purpose of the conference is to help nurses working with wounds, ostomies and continence issues to implement the new guidelines in wound management, provide evidence-based education, and practice innovations that promote professional growth and development to improve patient outcomes. Target Audience: The Wound Care Institute is primarily designed for nurses working with patients with wounds, ostomies or continence issues. This includes staff nurses in acute care, long term care and home care, nurse managers/administrators, advanced practice nurses, community health nurses, educators, researchers, and entrepreneurs. Allied health personnel including physical therapists, will also benefit from the information presented. Nursing students are always welcome! Conference Learning Outcomes At the end of this program attendees will be able to: 1. Describe the pathology, clinical presentation and management guidelines for wounds, ostomies and continence issues. 2. Incorporate evidence-based practice techniques to improve patient outcomes in the management of wounds, ostomies and continence. 3. Determine strategies to avoid the legal pitfalls in caring for clients with wounds. 4. Incorporate key laboratory values used in the management of wound healing. 5. Apply the newest developments from the International Pressure Ulcer Guidelines to clinical practice in preventing and managing wounds. Poster Abstracts Submit by February 15, 2016 Consider submitting a poster related to wound, ostomy and continence issues or an evidence-based clinical study with implications for nursing practice. Abstracts will be peer reviewed with notification of acceptance within two weeks after submission. 3 Sunday, March 13 Session A 8:30-11:30 AM Pharmacology Update for the WOC Nurse Janice Beitz, PhD, RN, CS, CNOR, CWOCN, CRNP, APN, C, MAPWCA, FAAN Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nursing requires a solid understanding of pharmacological agents and their impact particularly on wound and ostomy care issues. This session will focus on updating attendees about crucial drug therapies for wound and ostomy care. The effect of drug therapies on impairing wound healing will also be included. Case studies will allow for application of learned material to clinical scenarios. Session B 1:00-4:00 PM Was This Pressure Ulcer Avoidable? Legal Issues in Wound Care Joyce M. Black, PhD, RN, CWCN, FAAN & Kathryn Cheatle, JD Pressure ulcers are one of the most common claims made against health care providers. This session will introduce you to the usual steps taken by the plaintiff and the defendant in legal claims. The cornerstone of defending the care provided is documentation and we will show you how to improve your documentation and how to handle missing documentation. Since being named in a lawsuit can be stressful, understanding your role and how to prepare for testimony will be covered. 4 Barb Bancroft, RN, MSN, PNP - Barb has over 30 years of teaching experience- teaching students, nurses, practitioners, educators, and lay audiences throughout the U.S. and Canada. She also has 30 years of feeling the pulse of nursing, as she has provided over 2600 continuing education seminars to nursing students, professional nurses, and nurse educators. Barb has also taught at various universities in her career, including the University of Virginia, the University of Arkansas, Loyola University of Chicago, and St. Xavier University of Chicago. She has provided courses in Advanced Pathophysiology, Pharmacology and Physical Assessment to undergraduate and graduate students. Cindy Barefield, BSN, RN-BC, CWOCN - Cindy has been a nurse for 34, years receiving both her ADN and BSN from Angelo State University in San Angelo, TX. She has achieved certification in Medical-Surgical Nursing, Professional Development and Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing. After completing the MD Anderson WOC Nurse Education Program, Cindy has worked as the acute care WOC Nurse at Houston Methodist San Jacinto Hospital. Jennifer Barnhill, MS, RDN - A Registered Dietitian, Jennifer graduated with a BS in Dietetics and Nutrition from The University of Southern MS and has a MS in Food and Nutrition from Texas Woman s University. She has nearly 30 years of experience working in healthcare providing healthy nutritional products for clients in nursing homes, retirement centers and hospitals. Janice M. Beitz, PhD, RN, CS, CNOR, CWOCN, CRNP, MAPWCA, FAAN - Janice is Professor of Nursing at Rutgers University-Camden and Director of the WOCNEP. As a CWOCN, she consults in the perioperative area. Janice co-conducted funded research on Content Validation of Pressure Ulcer Prevention Algorithms and Prioritizing Management Approaches to Stomal and Peristomal Complications. Janice is on the editorial and manuscript reviewer boards of multiple wound care and educational journals and has won numerous awards for excellence in teaching, research, and clinical practice. Janice will be inducted into the Academy of Nursing Education Fellows in Fall Joyce M. Black, PhD, RN, CWCN, FAAN - Joyce is an Associate Professor of Nursing with the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. She started in wound healing in 1975 while working in reconstructive surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Joyce is a past President of NPUAP and chair of the task force to redefine stages of pressure ulcers including deep tissue injury. Her research continues in the area of pressure ulcer prevention. Kathryn Cheatle, JD - Katy practices almost exclusively in the area of medical malpractice defense representing hospitals, clinics, and physicians. She has defended a wide-variety of medical negligence cases including pressure ulcers, falls, medication errors, and labor & delivery. She is a member of the Nebraska Bar Association, American Bar Association, and the National Order of Barristers. Katy graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Law, where she completed a concentrated program of study in litigation, both civil and criminal.
5 Janet M. Davis, MSN, RN, GNP, CWOCN - Janet has been a board-certified WOC Nurse for over 20 years. Her varied clinical experiences in acute care, outpatient, home care and LTC nursing have provided valuable experiences in the arena of wounds, ostomies and continence care. Janet has been an educator of WOC nursing topics since 1990, including serving as the Program Director of the Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing Education Program at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Dorothy Doughty, MN, RN, CWOCN, CFCN - Dorothy obtained her BSN from Medical College of Georgia and her MN from Emory University. She has been a WOC nurse since 1980 and has been the director of the Emory University WOC Nursing Education Program since She has a number of publications and presentations in the field of WOC nursing and is past President of the WOCN Society. Debbie Fulmer, MSN, RN, CWOCN - Debbie graduated from the University of Central Arkansas with a BSN in 1976 and an MSN in She attended the Emory Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Education program in She is a recently retired Assistant Professor of Nursing from the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith. Debbie resides in Fort Smith where she maintains a private practice working with healthcare facilities as a wound, ostomy and continence nurse consultant. Diana L. Gallagher, MS, RN, CWOCN, CFCN - Diana began her nursing career on a busy medical/surgical unit and it was there that she first worked with a WOC Nurse and recognized what a critical difference they make. Diana graduated from Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing Education Program at Emory University in She was instrumental in beginning the NW Arkansas Ostomy Support Group and maintains a busy consulting practice working directly with patients and referring physicians. Tina Meyers, MBA, BSN, CWOCN - Tina received the majority of her wound care training in a Hyperbaric Wound Care Center. Tina is developing a CNA Program with a focus on pressure ulcer prevention and implementing a program to incorporate wound and ostomy management for Skilled Nursing Patients. She has been alert to preventing pressure ulcers with research efforts on eliminating heel ulcers. Tina has completed research projects on prevention of heel ulcers and plantar flexion contractures through case studies and randomized controlled studies. She has also published in the Journal of WOCN and other professional journals. Suzy Scott, MSN, RN, CWOCN - Suzy is the Patient Safety/QI Educator with UTHSC in Memphis and is an affiliate faculty in the Center for Health Systems Improvement. She retired from the VA after serving as an Acute Care Specialist. Recognized by the American Academy of Nurses in the Raise the Voice Campaign for transforming health care, Suzy developed the Scott Triggers, an evidence-based tool used to identify high risk for pressure ulcers in surgical patients.
