2 Recent News and Events "Overseas Chinese Entrepreneurship: Theory and Practice" was the theme of the Fourth Tsinghua Forum on Overseas Chinese Studies, hosted by the Canada-China Institute for Business & Development (CCIBD) on June 8 at Ryerson s Ted Rogers School of Management. The first three Tsinghua Forums were all held at Tsinghua University in Beijing. This was the first time the Forum was held outside of China and was also the first time a practitioner / entrepreneur component was featured in the Forum's program. LI NA / CHINA DAILY, Toronto Research Presentation The Honorable David Dingwall opened up the morning s research session by highlighting the contributions of Chinese entrepreneurs to the Canadian economy and the importance of research in understanding their history, business methods, and future development. Howard Lin, co-director of CCIBD, proposed a model to capture the various modes of immigrant entrepreneurship, which set a stage for the rest of the research presentations, including: Jack Leong (University of Toronto): History of Chinese in Toronto ; Shuguang Wang (Ryerson University): Geographic Distribution of Chinese Businesses in Toronto ; Tony Fang (Monash University) on "From Brain Drain to Brain Circulation: International Migration and Global Talent Management"; Gil Lan (Ryerson University): Legal Consciousness among Chinese Immigrant Entrepreneurs in Canada ; Yiwei Qiao (Overseas Chinese History Studies Journal): Investment Migrants and Impact ; Xiuming Zhang (Chinese Institute for Overseas Chinese History Studies): Government Programs toward Overseas Chinese Entrepreneurs ; Denggao Long (Tsinghua University): Development of Service Sectors by Overseas Chinese Entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurship Forum The entrepreneurship forum in the afternoon began with remarks by Dean Steven Murphy, who emphasized Ryerson s commitment to diversity and welcomed the opportunities to work with the Chinese community in our agenda for city building, entrepreneurship, and innovation. Mr. Shi Xiaoguang, consul from the General Consulate of the PRC in Toronto, also delivered a speech, encouraging further efforts in promoting entrepreneurship in the Chinese community, and business and scholarly exchange in the area of entrepreneurship. The forum featured Liu Tee Shu, President, Flushing Chinese Business Association and recipient of Elis Island Medals of Honor from the United States. Mrs. Liu told her story about migrating from Taiwan and working through hardship to becoming a legendary entrepreneur in multiple businesses. This keynote speech was followed by a panel of five successful entrepreneurs, including: Saylor Huang, President, Skyreach L&S Extrusions Corp. (Toronto) Alex Xu, Chairman, Suzhou Ubi Clothing Ltd. (China) Linda Liu, President, TLC Rest Home (Windsor) Bobby Teng, President, 168 Sushi Buffet (Toronto) Xingjuan Liang, President, Chinese Entrepreneurs Society of Canada (Vancouver) Among enthusiastic audience of 300 plus attendees were entrepreneurs, community leaders, business service providers as well as students, including a group of MBA students who drove from Queen's University just for the event. The Forum was co-organized by the Center for Chinese Entrepreneurship, Tsinghua University, the Canada-China Institute for Business & Development at TRSM, and the Chinese Institute for Overseas Chinese History Studies. More than 300 people took part in the Forum.
4 This May the Ted Rogers School of Retail Management sent sixteen students on a study tour of three major retail centres in China. Dr. Hong Yu, a retail professor who is internationally known for her research in culturally specific consumer behaviour and market strategies, together with Dr. Donna Smith, led this degree credit study tour of retail and manufacturing companies in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou. In each city, the group visited various local and multinational companies; including VICTU, shopin.net, Grace Chen Studio, Mclon, NetEase, Wensli, Zegna, and various wholesale and retail markets ranging from upscale shopping malls, mid-range electronic mart, and Wholesale Market for Agricultural Products and International Fishery Market. They also visited three academic institutions and the Canadian Embassy in Beijing. In addition, they visited tourism landmarks to expand their cultural experiences and understanding. Each student wrote a final report upon completion of the trip. The report focuses on the culture and retail markets in China, including consumer behaviour, competitive strategies, the potential to succeed and challenges faced by both retail and wholesale companies. The group visited NetEase, a high tech company in China. 5 Dr. Ken Grant's Academic Visit to China Dr. Ken Grant has recently returned from a visit to China, where he presented a keynote speech at the Knowledge Globalization Conference on Teaching Entrepreneurship in Shijiazhuang, China. The topic was Teaching Business Plans within an Entrepreneurship Program. Delegates were very interested in learning how Ryerson delivers innovative teaching about entrepreneurship and Ken was invited to visit several Chinese universities to give more detailed guidance in this area. Dr. Grant then visited two of Ryerson s partner universities: Beijing University of Technology and Shanghai University of International Business and Economics -- where he gave seminars to faculty, and both graduate and undergraduate students on Innovation vs Imitation & Entrepreneurship Strategies and also had discussions on possible faculty and student exchanges.
