1 USF School of Management China Business Studies Initiative hosts CBSI Forum China s New Investment Strategy: A Reality Check August 27, :00-5:30pm followed by a reception (5:30-6:30pm) Xavier Room, Fromm Hall University of San Francisco (Free public event; free parking on campus) China s economic development trajectory is changing. That is reflected in President Xi Jinping s new initiative One Belt One Road (OBOR), which he announced in late 2013 and has since dominated China s international economic relations agenda. One Belt refers to the New Silk Road Economic Belt, runs westward overland through Central Asia and onward to Europe. One Road refers to the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road, which will loop south and westward by sea towards Europe, via South-east Asia, South Asia and Africa. This bold and ambitious international initiative has drawn attention from around the world, including the United States, currently not on route of OBOR. Accompanying OBOR is the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). What lies behind these initiatives and what are the implications for the US-China investment relations? And how will these initiatives be affected by the recent Chinese stock market crash and the government s intervention into the market? Come and hear expert views on US-China investment relations, OBOR and AIIB, and how changes in Chinese equity markets are likely to affect Chinese outbound investment. 3 Speakers Xia Xiang China Business Studies Initiative China s New Investment Strategy: A Reality Check August 27, 2015 Mr. Xiang has a long-standing career as a diplomat representing China and is currently serving as the Economic and Commercial Counselor for the Consulate. Charles Field Charles H. Field is counsel in the San Diego office of Sanford Heisler Kimpel, LLP, a national law firm with offices in New York, Washington, DC, San Francisco, and San Diego. He received his J.D. from McGeorge Law School in 1986 and his Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts from Indiana University-Indianapolis

4 in Mr. Field is Co-Chair with Grant Morris of Sanford Heisler Kimpel s Financial Services Litigation practice. He has been practicing in the securities law area for more than 28 years. His practice focuses on protecting the interests of investors. Having served from 2002 to 2013 as the General Counsel of NicholasApplegate Capital Management and its successor, Allianz Global Investors Capital, he brings a combination of private practice experience and a deep knowledge of the laws governing investment advisers, broker-dealers, and commodity trading advisers, which he uses to assess whether a seller has breached a legal obligation and to evaluate whether an aggrieved investor can recover damages. In addition to his General Counsel experience, he has held industry roles as Chief Compliance Officer, FINRA General Securities Principal, General Options Principal, and General Municipal Securities Principal. Mr. Field understands the daily activities and needs of investors and other market participants. Tom Kochis Tim Kochis has over 42 years of experience in the personal financial and investment planning profession, most recently as CEO and the Chairman of Aspiriant until He was a founder of Kochis Fitz, one of its predecessor firms and before that, Tim was head of Personal Financial Planning for Deloitte and, before that, for Bank of America. Mr. Kochis has received every achievement award in his profession and UC Berkeley confers an award for teaching excellence in his name. In the mid- 80 s, he was responsible for supervising the creation of the first comprehensive examination now used throughout the profession to qualify CFP candidates. He is one of the his profession s "Movers and Shakers" for leadership in organizations such as the CFP Board of Standards, the Foundation for Financial Planning, and for his founding role in the Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB), the global certification authority for the financial planning profession.

5 Several of Mr. Mr. Kochis books include a book on wealth management for the Chinese market, with co-author, Zhang Bei, PhD., who has been an adjunct professor at USF. He serves on the boards of USF, the Asian Art Museum, the 1990 Institute, and The Asia Foundation. He also serves on the Charles Schwab ETF and Mutual Funds board. Dr. Marshall W. Meyer Marshall W. Meyer is the Tsai Wan-Tsai Professor Emeritus in the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he is also Professor of Management and Sociology Emeritus, Associate Member of the Center for East Asian Studies and a member of the Executive Committee of the Center for the Study of Contemporary China. Mr. Meyer served as Executive Senior Editor of Management and Organization Review, the journal of the International Association for Chinese Management Research, from 2004 to 2013 and remains a member of its Editorial Advisory Board. He is also a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the International Journal of Emerging Markets. Mr. Meyer was Associate Editor of Administrative Science Quarterly from 1987 to 1995 and has served on the editorial boards of the American Sociological Review, among other editorial credentials. His recent presentations include the opening keynote address to the China Goes Global conference at the JFK School of Government, Harvard University (October, 2012); an opening keynote address to the special China meeting of the Strategic Management Society (December, 2012); the keynote address to the year-end strategy meeting of the Haier Group, Qingdao, China (January, 2013); the keynote

6 address to the Penn China Forum (October, 2013), the keynote address to the University of San Francisco s CBSI inaugural international conference (February 2015) among others. Wayne Wang Mr. Wang has brought his expertise in wealth of management and investment as Chairman, CEO and Founder of CDP Group, which is one of the largest and most innovative Human Capital Management Corporate Services and Technology Providers in Greater China and Asia. Among his earlier career, he was a General Partner of a US-China based Private Equity Investment Firm, and also held Senior International Executive positions with large Multinational Companies in US, Europe and China for more than 16 years. Mr. Wang has built an extensive network of high-level contacts across China, Europe and US in business, government and investment communities. Mr. Wang was the Chairman of European Chamber of Commerce China HR Forum and Executive Member of Shanghai Services Federation, and he is also a Special Advisor for SHRCA. Also most recently, he is an advisory Board Member of A Capital, a Euro-China Private Equity Fund that already had a few landmark deals. Mr. Wang graduated from Fudan University in Shanghai, China at early years with a B.S. Computer Science degree and held dual M.S. Degrees in Computer Engineering and Statistics from the University of Iowa in Iowa, the United States, and an Executive MBA Degree from HEC-Paris, School of Management in Paris, France. Mr. Wang has received many accolades for his outstanding contributions to the modern services industry in recent years. His awards include the Outstanding Chinese Brand Builder of the Year by Chinese Brand Association, Global Economic Stimulus Prize by American Society for Human Resource

7 Management (SHRM), Chinese Business Leader of the Year by EU and the prestigious China Federation of Industrial Economics (CFIE), and many more. Xiaohua Yang Xiaohua Yang is a professor of International Business and the director of China Business Studies Initiative in the School of Management at the University of San Francisco. She specializes in internationalization of Chinese firms, international R&D strategic alliances, and corporate social responsibility in MNEs. Dr. Yang is a recipient of multiple Best Paper Awards from prestigious international conferences and journals, the outstanding research award and the outstanding service award from the USF School of Management. She is also a guest editor of several top journals including Asia Pacific Journal of Management and Business Ethics Quarterly, Thunderbird International Business Review among other editorial credentials. Dr. Yang has served on numerous boards and has consulted companies and government agencies in a number of countries, including US, China, Australia, Finland, and Armenia. She has designed and delivered training courses for Chinese companies. She has been interviewed and quoted by many newspapers and TV. She is frequently invited to speak at international conferences, forums and symposia (both academic and practitioner).
