3 SOLAR ENERGY When solar energy hits objects, some of the energy is reflected and some is absorbed and changed into heat. Some colors absorb more solar energy than others. Step 1. Put three thermometers in a sunny place. Step 2. Cover the bulb of one with black paper. Cover the bulb of one with white paper. Step 3. Predict which thermometer will get the hottest. Number them 1-3, with one as the hottest. Step 4. Wait a few minutes. Step 5. Record your results by coloring the tubes of the thermometers. Step 6. Look at the results and number the thermometers 1-3 with one as the hottest How Well Did You Predict?

12 BIOMASS ENERGY Find out about biomass energy Biomass is plant or animal material that can be used as fuel, to provide heat or electricity Discuss how do you think we are going to develop this experiment. Look the pictures.

13 BIOMASS ENERGY 1. Collect freshly to fill a bin liner half or two-thirds full. 2. As soon as the grass cuttings are in the bag, measure their temperature with a thermometer. Temperature of grass cuttings at start of test: C 3. Close the bag to keep air out, and seal it with tape. Put the bag into the box and leave it for one week. 4. After the week open the bag and take the temperature of the grass in the middle of the bag. Temperature of grass cuttings at end of test: C 5. Feel the grass in the bag. (Wash your hands afterwards.) What does it feel like? 6. Can you explain what has happened? 7. Smell the grass cuttings: what is being given off?
