Transformation is all around us, and accompanying transitions seem to be happening rapidly as well, both externally and in our internal organization. One of our founding board members has stepped down in order to devote more time to her family. Priscilla Gonzalez-Leiva, RN, has served with unwavering commitment since 2001, and has provided leadership as Board Chairperson since We have all benefited from her passion and leadership, and will miss her insights, her values, her focus on an inclusive nursing profession, and her sense of humor. We are pleased that Terry Hill, MD, FACP, has assumed the position of Chairperson of the Board of Directors of CINHC. Dr. Hill is Vice President of Strategic Performance for the management services organization that organized Hill Physicians and continues to support their work today, and has been a member of the CINHC Board since His extensive background in many facets of healthcare will be extremely helpful as the Institute advances our mission, To enhance the well-being of Californians through innovation, interprofessional leadership, and nursing excellence. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Hill into his new leadership role. We are also delighted that Debra Bakerjian, PhD, RN, FNP, FAANP, has joined the Board of Directors this fall. You will find more information about Dr. Bakerjian and the contributions she will bring to CINHC in this newsletter. Finally, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who responded to our recent survey related to future directions for the Institute. Your feedback is invaluable as we move forward with planning for both the sustainability of CINHC and the program work in which we are engaged. As always, please feel free to contact me with any thoughts and suggestions you have at any time. Thank you for your continued support! Institute Sustainability The Institute is in the midst of an exciting effort to identify the best way to provide value to our current and future partners and customers. As our organization evolves, we are developing business models and a strategy for sustainability that minimizes dependence upon grant funding. In August 2014, we developed detailed surveys regarding the Institute s program work and current offerings, as well as potential new areas of focus, especially in light of healthcare reform. The surveys were customized and distributed to associations, health care systems, FQHCs, schools, foundations, workforce centers and action coalitions. We are grateful and pleased to have received 170 responses. We are now in the midst of careful review and analysis of the feedback, looking for emerging patterns. Preliminary analysis shows that information on emerging roles for nurses and expanded offering of the RN Transition Programs are two primary areas of interest from respondents, among other areas. As a next step, we will begin to shape business models and will solicit input through various means, including meetings, phone calls and conversations, as the opportunity presents itself. We continue to seek and gather your input and buy-in, to make sure the direction of the Institute best meets your needs. 2 Page 2 The CA Collaborative Model for Nursing Education (CCMNE) California has made steady progress in advancing nursing education over the past decade with 53.2% of the nursing workforce holding a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or higher degree, as reported in the last BRN Survey of Registered Nurses in California, This biannual survey is again underway, and we anticipate results will provide further evidence of California s progress toward the 80% goal established by the Institute of Medicine s Future of Nursing Report. Many factors have influenced the transformation of nursing education and changes in health care delivery, resulting in new strategies to advance the education of California s nursing workforce. These include increases in the number and capacity of prelicensure BSN and ELM programs, growth in postlicensure RN to BSN and MSN programs, and adoption of AB 1295, requiring no duplication of course content. Trends in the complexity of care delivery and evolving nursing roles are prompting more nurses to advance their education with broader career opportunities. Nursing schools report increased enrollment of newly graduated ADN nurses in RN to BSN programs. Seamless models of academic progression have emerged, which minimize barriers to higher education and provide options for advancement. The California Collaborative Model for Nursing Education (CCMNE), evolving in response to the 2006 White Paper on Nursing Education Redesign, is a shared curriculum model that builds on the foundation of ADN education in partnership with universities by providing dedicated ADN to BSN education pathways, allowing nursing students to begin taking BSN coursework while enrolled in an ADN program. The coordination and design of these pathways between a university and one or more ADN programs working collaboratively supports students to obtain their BSN while efficiently utilizing the shared capacity across academic systems. CCMNE programs are currently provided by 13 universities (11 CSUs, 2 private universities) in collaboration with 50 community colleges throughout the state, with an estimated 354 students newly enrolled this year. Most programs are structured so students can complete their BSN degree with one more year of full-time coursework after completing their ADN degree, providing an excellent option for ADN students to move forward and obtain a BSN quickly. For further information on the California Collaborative Model for Nursing Education visit the CINHC website: click the Educational Capacity link, then the CCMNE link, both on the left side of the page. - Submitted by Carolyn Orlowski, RN, MSN Meet Our New Board Member Debra Bakerjian, PhD, RN, FNP, FAANP, joined the Board of Directors in September Dr. Bakerjian is Senior Director for NP/PA Clinical Education & Practice and Assistant Adjunct Professor at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at University of California, Davis. She has previously held academic appointments in the Department of Family & Community Medicine at UC Davis and been an Assistant Adjunct Professor at the University of California, San Francisco. She has held clinical positions in the Bay Area as a Nurse Practitioner and been on active duty with the United States Army Reserve. She has also been the president and owner of businesses related to managing and consulting for geriatric care. Dr. Bakerjian is currently serving as President of the California Association of Long Term Care Medicine, the first nurse to be in that position. She has presented widely on the topics of leadership, pain management, and collaborative practice in long-term care settings in California and nationally. Dr. Bakerjian is widely published in multiple peer-reviewed journals, including Geriatric Nursing, Nursing Administration Quarterly, and Journal of the American Medical Directors Association. 3 Page 3 CINHC and the California Action Coalition Last year we received grants from the Gordon and Betty Moore to work on the sustainability of the California Institute for Nursing and Health Care (CINHC) and the California Action Coalition (CA AC). In addition, the CINHC Board of Directors met to look at strategies for moving the work forward in CA. The board members emphasized the need to integrate our work in a more intentional way, and to consider consolidation/restructure of our advisory committees. There is already considerable overlap in our membership and supporters across the state, providing us with a unique opportunity to think about the best way to further the important statewide efforts both the CA AC and CINHC are implementing at this time. The CA AC and CINHC are working on similar objectives over the coming months related to diversity, academic progression, transition to practice programs, interprofessional engagement and building statewide coalitions. An affiliation within the framework of CINHC will strengthen us both. Together we are well positioned to provide access to and help cultivate partnerships as we explore support for the future work of both of our organizations. A more dedicated relationship will increase our ability to move California to the next level and bring increased understanding to developing next steps for the work to improve the health of Californians.
