Day One: Tuesday 25 June 2013 Floating Cloud Concepts for New Business 09:45 Setting the Scene What is the cloud is and what it can offer to content creators and commercial enterprises in the newly connected world? Chairman: Professor David Crawford, Head of Business Partnership, University of Essex 10:00 PRESENTATION Spotlight on a CTO: Cloud Influences the Bigger Picture Hear from one of Europe s leading CTOs on how cloud has been applied to his organisation and how it will ultimately impact Channel 4 s business strategy. What benefits has their business reaped so far, by moving towards cloud based services? How have cloud services been leveraged across platforms to satisfy the needs of the consumer and what were the challenges and pitfalls of doing so? How will cloud be applied in different broadcast and media domains? For example, are there opportunities within cloud-based content transcoding? This stimulating session discusses how Bob Harris and his team are shaping their business and the industry in wake of technological advances in distributed computing. Don t miss out on this opportunity to ask your burning questions. You will walk with insight into CTO strategies which will enable you to benchmark your cloud plans and refine your business model. Bob Harris, Chief Technology Officer, Channel 4 Television 10:45 Sponsored sessions give you the opportunity to contribute to the programme and promote services and products to the IBC London Technology Booster audience. Sponsored session A: Forbidden Technologies LOOKING UNDER THE HOOD Cloud Based Post Production, Revolutionising Fast Turnaround Sports Content The London 2012 Olympic Games provided an opportunity to engage and involve a digitally enabled web and mobile audience across the planet. In many territories, Games coverage was provided by local rights holding broadcasters but for 64 countries in Asia and Africa, digital delivery was provided directly by the IOC through their YouTube channel, Steven Streater, CEO, Forbidden Technologies Sponsored session B: Sponsor TBA For further information, please contact the IBC Sales Team Steve Grice +44 (0) sgrice@ibc.org
continuing a collaboration that started in Beijing in In this session, Stephen Streater, CEO of Forbidden Technologies will discuss the workflow challenges involved in taking 11 live feeds and 2,200 hours of Games content to a digital audience in these Asian and sub-saharan African territories. He ll discuss how the FORscene platform was used to provide cloud based ingest and editing tools and combined with delivery through a specially designed gadget, to allow the audience in each territory to see their own athletes and medal winners, both live and ondemand. 10 live feeds were provided from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. London time plus a 24- hour broadcast of the Olympic News Channel, supplemented by on demand highlights, interviews and medal ceremonies. The workflow brought together expertise and technology from five organisations spread over three continents. Stephen will address the lessons learned in bringing these elements together to provide an engaging viewer experience and how this may influence a rights holders approach to providing web and mobile coverage of future large sports and live events. 11:30 Networking Break and Exhibition 12:00 TUTORIAL Session 1: Practical Cloud Solutions From ingest to delivery and from data encoding to protection, cloud technologies from multiple vendors can build new workflow models and provide the building blocks for innovative and new solutions. What to choose though? This tutorial will identify multiple examples of how cloud computing is Xavier Pouyat, Senior Program Manager, Windows Azure Media Services, Microsoft Corporation, France LOOKING UNDER THE HOOD Session 2: Handling Big Datasets in the Cloud One of the objections often cited to cloud-based services in broadcast lies in the sheer volume of data that is required to be moved, stored and processed. However, many scientific experiments produce big data files which are so large that they become too hard to be processed on a single machine. This data can even be David Wallom - Oxford eresearch Centre, University of Oxford
enabling new scenarios and opportunities in media. Issues of privacy, security and compliance will be explained. How can the cloud help you and your customers in achieving your business goals? This workshop will present case studies that provide a comprehensive and practical overview of the subject. so big, that it takes hours or days to process it in a data warehouse. Fortunately, cloud computing comes to the rescue, by providing nearly unlimited scalable storage capacity for data; elastic computing capacity to process this data and network capacities, and services to transfer data and coordinate processing. In this session, you will learn how the cloud was able to help Oxford e-research Centre carry out tasks that would have been impossible in-house. You will come away from the session with valuable insight from outside the industry, and gain the competitive edge over your competitors. 12:45 Networking Lunch and Exhibition 14:00 PRESENTATION New Business and Technology Opportunities This session will pull together the themes and ideas from the day s workshops and sessions to identify how a combination of on-premises and cloud-based media services can provide innovative platforms for both existing and new markets in broadcasting and related technology areas. Andrew Tyrer, Lead Specialist, Digital, will give an overview of how UK industry is embracing connected content and the cloud following a 5m investment by the UK s innovation agency, the Technology Strategy Board. Delegates will hear about the media and broadcasting businesses that are benefiting from the investment and how they are developing solutions in the cloud to provide both new services and new opportunities. Andrew Tyrer, Lead Specialist, Digital, Technology Strategy Board Tristan Ferne, Executive Producer, BBC 14:45 Coffee break and exhibition 15:15 Sponsored session C: Cisco Sponsored session D: Zoo Digital LOOKING UNDER THE HOOD Cloud Based Workflow Management Transforming Creative and Production Process Management Dr. Stuart Green, CEO, ZOO Digital Rights owners, broadcasters and post production facilities face significant business
16:00 INTERACTIVE SESSION Innovation in Cloud Services challenges in managing an ever growing pipeline of programming, from creative production through to distribution. Successful exploitation involves the effective collaboration of multiple organisations within the value chain, ensuring that management information is accessible, accurate and up-todate for all parties. In this session ZOO Digital will present a series of examples of the deployment of cloud technologies that enable efficient and effective collaboration using workflow management to support and automate administrative processes. Case studies will be drawn from ZOO s experience of working with rights holders, broadcasters and post production facilities, including major Hollywood studios, with workflows that include project planning, advertising sales, marketing campaign management and subtitling. The promise of cloud computing is a rich one, but what does it mean for business, for our lifestyles and for society as a whole? Our futurists will walk you through the cloud-based visions of the future, merging both optimistic and negative views of what s to come into a pragmatic whole. Starting with a detailed introduction into how the cloud is used now, the session will go on to outline what impact its continued evolution could have on the convergent media industry and society at large. You will then be encouraged to comment on their observations and predictions - With continued leaps in processing capability, is its role set to be storage oriented as the desktop becomes increasingly capable, or is the aggregation of computing power key here as well? What are the disruptive possibilities and potential risks, and how does our business and industry need to react to them? And how can the cloud help us all achieve our disparate goals? Cut through the hype and you ll gain a deep understanding of what the cloud can achieve, understanding of the near-future technology roadmap, and the confidence to maximise its promise. Speakers: Brian David Johnson, Futurist, Principal Engineer, Intel Corporation (By web conference) Peter Cochrane, Futurologist, Cochrane Associates 16:45 Closing Remarks from Chairman and End of Day One

Professor David Crawford previews key disruptors and how we will address these throughout the day 10:00 INTERACTIVE SESSION The Opportunities Of Convergence: New Platforms With broadcast increasingly moving to an effective multicast model, this session will discuss how the convergent media industry can identify and take advantage of emerging market opportunities. This fully interactive session will mix expert insights with robust questioning from the audience and will start with a brief introduction to the topics before delving straight into the opportunities afforded by new streaming, coding and processing techniques. With consumer behaviour changing all the time, which technologies deserve investment? How will bandwidth be managed by multiple interests? What are the opportunities that increasingly efficient codecs present and what are their limits? More importantly, how will your business react to these new technologies? Find out the answers to your questions here. The conversation this session will produce is your chance to gain a thorough understanding of the technologies in play and which will be the best match for both your business and your consumers. Ian Mecklenbu rgh, Director, Consumer Platforms and Devices, Virgin Media 10:45 Networking Break and Exhibition 11:00 QUICK-FIRE CLINIC Connected Content Clinic One of the demands of the connected future is for everything to be available everywhere, but how do we get the content we want to every room in the house? With competing standards at play, in which direction will the industry move? This rapid-fire, collaborative session will explore content, metadata, archiving, home networks and consumer needs. This series of short, intensive clinics will cover three areas of connected content: Machine to Machine, Consumer and Home Networks and Services and Compression The objective is for the panel and the audience to cover a range of issues, from content compatibility and quality of experience to the Internet of Things, Facilitator: Phil Laven, Chairman, DVB Speakers: Richard Lindsay- Davies, Director General, DTG Dr Luca Pesando, Vice President, OIPF
and reach an understanding of the new protocols and coding schemes involved. Come to this session armed with the questions you want answered. Which will be most efficient? How high will the bitrates be? Major industry associations, who represent the viewpoints of powerful industry sectors, will contribute to the debate and explain why they back certain standards. By the end of the session, you will emerge with the key facts and knowledge to best predict the way the industry will move forward in this crucial area.
