5 Genesis of the Docklands Project Custom House Docks / IFSC International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) A partnership in which Government incentives provided the catalyst to encourage private enterprise. A revolutionary idea driven internationally by Government appointed task force in conjunction with the IDA. The vision was to develop a global financial hub (IFSC) to increase tax revenue and tackle problems with the national economy. Genesis of the Docklands Project Custom House Docks / IFSC IFSC Almost 25,000 employed in 460 IFSC registered companies resulting in payroll & personal receipts approx. 500 million per year in Dublin. Contributes 7.4% Irish GDP and over 2bn to Irish Exchequer 36% of corporation tax receipts in Ireland Developed in two phases, the IFSC has re-integrated the area with the city and is home to some of the world s best known financial institutions. 5

Moonless Tides black out the piles Of the landing-stage phosphorescent Plash of smiles In darkness Harry Clifton The vision for Titanic Quarter is a knowledge based society which embraces research and development activity, education, training, lifelong learning possibilities, business incubation units and high technology companies brought together in an environment which includes the social, recreational and accommodation facilities necessary for an innovation community to flourish. One of pre-requisites of the design was that Titanic Quarter be a state of the art environmentally friendly development. 20

21 The resulting masterplan stipulates that wherever possible, renewable energy be utilised and, for optimum efficiency, managed by sophisticated energy and waste management systems. Equally, all new buildings maximise the natural use of light and alternative energy. The centre-piece to the vision for Titanic Quarter is the resurrection of the Titanic itself, although only in hologramic form. Client: Harland & Wolff 21

22 It would be very interesting to record photographically, not the stage of a painting but its metamorphoses. One would see perhaps of what course a mind finds its way towards the crystallisation of its dream.
