2 Our ambition for Greater Manchester The Original Modern City By 2020, the Manchester city region will have pioneered a new model for sustainable economic growth based around a more connected, talented and greener city region where all our residents are able to contribute to and benefit from sustained prosperity. Our creative ambition is for Manchester to be as famous for arts as it is for football. - Dave Moutrey, Director, HOME

4 Cultural Manchester Manchester has a long history of attracting and generating creative and cultural forces LS Lowry, Charles Hallé, Tony Wilson, Danny Boyle But Arts Council funding for cultural activities outside London is low Estimated 69 per person in London; 4.60 per person elsewhere This has influenced the Manchester Approach Pragmatic, forthright, our own way How can we utilise our cultural forces? To shape our city To grow our economy

The MIER identified we are punching below our weight economically We need to: Support creative content development Provide the tools and resources to grow the sector Attract and retain the right skills and competencies Provide a business environment conducive to creative industry growth Link to economic growth We have generated an agglomeration where creative businesses can thrive and are attracted to But now we need to use creative industries to support economic regeneration

Not creative or cultural but an agglomeration of talents: leisure, cultural, scientific, entrepreneurial and more The earth is not flat: different places stand at different heights economically, culturally and creatively Purposefully civic action can and does make a big difference Festivals etc have a key role to play but the biggest issues are legacy and momentum
17 ...Closing thoughts Find out who you are and do it on purpose
