Degree and Certificate Options COA Certificate of Achievement (state-approved program) COP Certificate of Proficiency (locally approved program, under 18 units) AA Associate in Arts Degree AA-T Associate in Arts for Transfer Degree AS Associate in Science Degree AS-T Associate in Science for Transfer Degree

Certificate of Achievement Granted for the completion of a specified program, or specified courses. These state approved certificates acknowledge workplace competencies and job readiness. Specific course requirements for each certificate are listed with the program descriptions in CCC course catalogs. In many, but not all cases, the courses that comprise the certificate of achievement program are the same as those that comprise the major for the Associate in Science degree. Students must complete all of the courses in the certificate program with grade of A, B, C, or P. A minimum of 12 units in the certificate program must be completed.

Certificate of Proficiency Certificates of proficiency are granted for the completion of a specified program, or specified courses, whose total requirement is less than 18 units. These locally approved certificates are designed to acknowledge basic workplace competencies and job readiness for students who are entering the workforce or upgrading their job skills. Specific course requirements for each certificate of proficiency are listed with the program descriptions in CCC course catalogs. Students must complete all of the courses in the certificate of proficiency program with grade of A, B, C, or P.

Associate in Arts/Science Degrees Associate in Arts/Science degrees with an area of emphasis are designed for students who want to earn a college degree with a focus, whether to achieve a personal or career goal or in preparation for transfer to the University of California (UC), California State University (CSU), or a private or out-of-state university. Those students who intend to earn an associate degree prior to transfer are advised to consult with the counseling faculty as early as possible to develop an appropriate educational plan to achieve their academic goals and degree and their transfer objectives. This is especially important because different transfer institutions may require specific general education patterns and lower-division courses to fulfill major requirements.

Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA -T) or Associate in Science for Transfer (AS -T) The Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act (Senate Bill 1440, now codified in California Education Code sections ) guarantees admission to a California State University (CSU) campus for any community college student who completes an associate degree for transfer, a newly established variation of the associate degrees traditionally offered at a California community college. The Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA-T) or the Associate in Science for Transfer (AS-T) is intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor s degree in a similar major at a CSU campus. Students completing these degrees (AA- T or AS-T) are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major.

Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA -T) or Associate in Science for Transfer (AS -T) In order to earn one of these degrees, students must complete a minimum of 60 required semester units of CSUtransferable coursework with a minimum GPA of 2.0. Students transferring to a CSU campus that does accept the AA-T or AS- T will be required to complete no more than 60 units after transfer to earn a bachelor s degree (unless the major is a designated high-unit major). This degree may not be the best option for students intending to transfer to a particular CSU campus or to university or college that is not part of the CSU system. Students should consult with a counselor when planning to complete the degree for more information on university admission and transfer requirements.

Seven UC campuses Davis Irvine Merced Riverside San Diego Santa Barbara Santa Cruz TAG (Transfer Admission Guarantee) Offer guaranteed admission to California community college students who meet specific requirements. Interested students must meet campus-specific requirements to qualify for a UC TAG. By participating in a TAG program, you can ensure your admission to a specific UC campus, some of which offer an early review of your academic records, early admission notification, and specific guidance on major preparation and general education coursework.

TAG (Transfer Admission Guarantee) You can download a matrix of TAG program requirements at Students should visit the Transfer Center or Counseling Center for information regarding specific criteria for each UC campus. September 1 30 one year prior to enrollment is the online application filing period for TAGs. To pursue a TAG, you must: Fill out an online TAG application and review it with your IVC counselor. (Download the TAG application at uctag.universityofcalifornia.edu.) Once your TAG is submitted and approved, fulfill all remaining coursework and GPA requirements designated in your TAG agreement. Apply for admission to UC during the appropriate filing period (see Students are strongly encouraged to consult with their IVC counselor prior to completing/submitting the TAG application.

Guaranteed Transfer UC/Honors Pathway UCLA TAP (Transfer Alliance Program) UCLATAP The Transfer Alliance Program is a collaboration between local community college Honors/Scholars Programs and the UCLA College of Letters and Science in conjunction with Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools. The program is designed to foster academic excellence at the community college level and to promote diversity and retention in the UCLA transfer population. Member community colleges provide enriched general education curricula emphasizing critical thinking, writing, and research through their Honors/Scholars programs. Students who have completed the Honors Program at IVC receive priority consideration for admission to the UCLA College of Letters and Science. Admitted TAP students are also eligible to apply for scholarships reserved for the TAP-certified students. The transfer rate to UCLA for students who complete the Honors Program is significantly higher than that of nonhonors students. Transfer rates for IVC Honors Program students generally run between 80 and 90% compared to 20 to 30% for non-honors IVC students.

Guaranteed Transfer UC/Honors Pathway UCI Honors-to-Honors Transfer Agreement UCI's "Honors to Honors" program is a special transfer agreement available for students from select community colleges, including Irvine Valley College. The "Honors to Honors" program offers highperforming students who complete the IVC Honors Program several advantages including priority admission review, automatic admission to the UCI Campuswide Honors Program, guaranteed housing, individual advising, faculty mentoring for a Senior Thesis, and renewable Regents Scholarships. Eligibility requirements are subject to change. Students who complete the IVC Honors Program but are not eligible for the UCI's "Honors to Honors" program are also given special consideration in the evaluation of their transfer application and may be eligible for admission to UCI's Campus wide Honors Program.

He eventually graduated from film school at the University of Southern California Tom Hanks attended Chabot College and California State University before traveling to Cleveland for a community theater play to start his acting career.

Famous Community College Attendees Eileen Collins was a NASA astronaut and the first woman Space Shuttle Commander. She received an Associate Science degree in mathematics and science from Corning Community College. Sarah Palin is an American politician most known in her role as the former Governor of Alaska and Vice- Presidential nominee during the 2008 election. 22 Priority Registration New regulations, which take effect in fall 2014, will continue to reward students who are making progress toward their academic and career goals, while also granting priority registration status to some first-time students. Incoming freshman, and other first-time students, will be eligible to sign up for classes during the college s initial registration period, provided they complete all the steps associated with the college s mandatory SSSP (matriculation) process before June 30, 2015.

Community College Student Success and Support Program or SSSP (formally called Matriculation) Application Assessment (Math/English) Orientation (In-Person or Online) Counseling, advisement, planning an initial 1 st semester plan, and other educational services

Priority Registration (Cont) First-time students who complete the SSSP (Matriculation) steps and qualify for priority registration will better position themselves to experience a successful first semester By registering early, students will also have a better chance of enrolling in the key courses they need to fulfill their general education requirements, satisfy course prerequisites and quickly complete their degree and/or transfer to a four-year school.

Priority Registration (Cont) With local demand for classes again expected to be high in 2015 current high school juniors, incoming freshman and other first-time students interested in attending College for the fall 2015 semester are encouraged to begin the matriculation process as early as possible in their senior year, even if they still may decide to attend another college or university. Completing the matriculation process does not commit a student to attending the CCC. But if they do end up wanting to enroll in classes at the college, those students will already have their spot secured, instead of having to scramble to enroll and register at the last minute.

The Assessment The score earned on the Math/English Assessment Test will be used to determine the first Math /English course you will take at the community college. Math and English Assessment Sessions last approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes. ESL Assessment Session lasts approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes. Students need to review the material of their last Math/English courses before taking the test to make sure they are placed at the correct level. Placement in a lower level will increase the number of semesters they will need to achieve their goals.

How to Prep for the Math Assessment IVC now has a new prep tool to prepare for the assessment test in math: MyMathTest, click on this link: MyMathTest The course identification number is XL18-P1HG- 601Y-4EV2. The cost for access is $ A calculator may not be used when taking the Math Assessment Test.

Where are Assessment Tests Administered? WHS collaborates each year with OCC and IVC to offer the Math and English Assessment Test on our campus. Students register in the spring with Mrs. Hodes, the College and Career Center Specialist. Students may also schedule an appointment to take the examination on the CCC campus by contacting the assessment center Students with disabilities may qualify for accommodations, however, it is critical they contact the Students with Disabilities Services Center several weeks prior to the assessment test date.

Retest Policy You are permitted to take the Math Assessment every 3 months and the English and English as a Second Language Assessment every 6 months. Writing Sample Once you receive a recommended initial placement into a basic skills writing course, and you wish to be placed into a higher level course you may do so by providing a Writing Sample. Complete the Request for Prerequisite Clearance and schedule an appointment for an Assessment Test. Inform the Matriculation Specialist you are seeking a higher placement by providing a Writing Sample.

IVC Fast Fridays A new program offered by IVC for freshman planning to attend their first semester of college in fall Eight Fast Fridays were offered to current seniors In one day complete Assessment Parent Orientation Financial Aid Workshop Campus Tour Advisement and complete abbreviated academic plan Free lunch!!! To be eligible students must submit an admission application and complete orientation

Enrollment Priorities Example Fall 2014 Priority Groups Register Date Freshman Advantage July 1 18, 2014 (All matriculation steps Completed by May 15, 2014) Continuing Students New/Returning Students Freshman who matriculate after May 15 All other applicants Emeritus (non-credit/older adults) Lower Priority Concurrently Enrolled High School Students Register Date July 21 Aug. 16, 2014

Student Academic Plans There are two types of Academic Plans Abbreviated 1 to 2 semester(s) in duration Comprehensive Once a continuing student has completed 15 degree applicable units OR before the end of their 3 rd semester (which ever occurs first), students will be required to declare an educational objective and a program of study.

Student Responsibility complete matriculation requirements by designated deadlines Students who do not will receive a lower priority registration time Identify an education and career goal Diligently engage in course activities and complete assigned coursework Complete courses and maintain progress toward an educational goal and completing a program of study Complete a comprehensive educational plan after completing 15 degree applicable units or prior to the end of the 3 rd semester

FAQ s Which courses do I have to take? In general, English and math are required whether you are transferring to a UC, CSU, private, or out-of-state school. Depending on your placement results, it may be necessary to take nontransferable courses before you begin your transferable English and math courses. As a transfer student, you need to declare a major when you apply to the university. Therefore, in addition to completing general education courses (IGETC or CSU Certification), it is important to complete coursework toward major preparation. Major course information is found on Ideally, you will want to know your major as far ahead as possible before you transfer. If your major requires math and science (e.g., engineering, biology, or computer science), it is especially important that you complete those courses before you transfer.

FAQ s How can I transfer as a junior to the UC or CSU system? If you re not eligible to enter UC or CSU as a high school senior, you need to complete 60 transferable units with a minimum 2.0 GPA (2.4 if you are a nonresident) for CSU, and 60 transferable units with a minimum 2.4 GPA (2.8 if you are a nonresident) for UC. You must also clear up any course deficiencies you may have had as a graduating high school senior (i.e., algebra, English, lab science, etc.). Meeting these criteria establishes minimum eligibility but does not guarantee admission. As a California community college student, you will be given preference over transfer students from four-year universities. The only exception to this policy is entrance into impacted majors, where you must meet other criteria as stipulated. Check with a counselor to find out if the major you re considering is impacted at any of the UC or CSU campuses.

FAQ s What if I don t know what I want to major in or where I want to transfer? This is typical of students everywhere. Again, these decisions take time and exposure, so don t pressure yourself into making a premature decision. Deciding what you will major in may eliminate a certain amount of anxiety, but if you make an unexamined choice, you may easily select the wrong major. You are encouraged to sign up for a Counseling or Career Exploration CCC course

ASSIST ASSIST is an online student-transfer information system that shows how course credits earned at one public California college or university can be applied when transferred to another. ASSIST is the official repository of articulation for California s public colleges and universities and provides the most accurate and up-to-date information about student transfer in California.
