1 The contains information about Academic Preparation, Applying for Admission, Academic Record Evaluation and Selection for junior level transfers interested in applying to the University of California (UC). Information is intended for use by counselors in advising students to transfer to one of UC s nine undergraduate campuses. Detailed information for admission to each campus can be found at the individual campus websites. Minimum junior-transfer admission requirements: 1 Complete 60 semester/90 quarter units of UC-transferable college credit with a GPA of at least 2.4 (2.8 for nonresidents). more than 14 semester/21 quarter units of the minimum 60/90 may be taken for Pass/t Pass grading. Complete the following course pattern requirements, earning a grade of C (2.0) or better in each course (a Pass or Credit grade is acceptable if is equivalent to a C (2.0); and each course have a minimum unit value of 3 semester/4 quarter units. o Two transferable college courses in English composition o o One transferable college course in mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning; Four transferable college courses chosen from at least two of the following subject areas: arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and physical and biological sciences Definition of a California community college transfer: A California community college student applying for admission to UC as a junior transfer will be given priority admission over other similarly qualified applicants if the student has completed at least 30 semester (45 quarter) UC-transferable units at one or more California community colleges; and the last college the student attended in a regular session (fall/spring or fall/winter/spring) before admission to a UC campus is/was a California community college. Additional information about requirements: Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) is not an admissions requirement. Some campuses may use IGETC (only applicable to California community colleges) as selection criteria. Requirements for the Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) program may be different than those listed throughout this document; refer to the TAG Matrix 2 for a complete listing of TAG requirements. Language other than English is not a transfer admissions requirement: A language other than English is not required to fulfill the minimum requirements for transfer admission. Specific colleges or departments at UC campuses may require a language other than English as part of their breadth or major requirements. However, students completing IGETC must demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English. English language proficiency requirement for non-native speakers: o Applicants whose native language is not English, and whose high school or college/university education was in a country where the language of instruction was not English, must provide evidence of English proficiency to be successful at UC. Refer to the Advising Students with International Records document for more information on ways to show proficiency. 2 o The English proficiency requirement is waived, if a transfer applicant completes two UC-transferable English composition courses (not ESL) at a U.S. college: with grades of C or higher for Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Riverside and Santa Barbara; or with grades of B or higher for Los Angeles, Merced, San Diego and Santa Cruz. o Davis, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara may require additional English proficiency testing for applicants admitted to their campuses. 1 More information about UC transfer admission requirements can be found at 1

5 Applying for Admission All UC campuses accept application for admission to the fall term. For the fall term, the online application opens the first week of October and the filing period is vember 1-30 (one year in advance of intended enrollment). For the winter/spring term, the filing period is July The online application is available at admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/how-to-apply/apply-online/. Transfer student must select a specific major (cannot be undeclared/undecided) at every UC campus except UC San Diego for which they can either select a specific major or apply as undeclared. All campuses, except Berkeley allow a student to list an alternate major when applying. Students should check the list of open filing periods and open majors before applying by visiting apply/checkmajors/ (occasionally, one or more campuses may accept applications for their winter/spring term). While campuses vary in use of the personal statement, all use it to evaluate the applicant s educational history and/or for certain scholarships Does the campus accept lower-division transfer applicants (fewer than 60 units)? What is the date applicants will be notified of their admission status for the fall 2014 term? Berkeley End of April Davis Yes, in some College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences majors Late April Irvine On a rolling basis, March 1-April 30 Los Angeles End of April Merced On a rolling basis, March 1-April 30 Riverside Yes, if space permits On a rolling basis, March 1-April 30 San Diego On a rolling basis, mid-march-april 30 Santa Barbara On a rolling basis, March 15-April 30 Santa Cruz On a rolling basis, March 17-April 30 Will the campus be accepting applications for winter and spring 2015 terms? 6 Academic Record Evaluation Accurately reporting all collegiate work: Students must report all prior collegiate academic work on the UC application. This includes any college or university work done outside of the United States, academic work that is several years old, and work that may reflect low grades. It is important to accurately list all course titles and numbers on the application; inaccurate or incomplete course titles slow evaluation of the application and could result in not receiving proper credit for fulfilling a course requirement, which could affect eligibility or selection for admission. Transfer Credit Limitation: Students will be granted up to 70 sem/105 qtr units of credit for lower-division coursework completed at any institution or any combination of institutions. For units beyond the maximum, subject credit for appropriate coursework taken in excess of this unit limitation will be granted and may be used to satisfy requirements. Units earned through: AP, IB, and/or A-Level examinations are not included in the limitation and do not put applicants at risk of being denied admission. Units earned at any UC campus (Extension, summer, cross/concurrent and regular academic year enrollment) are not included in the limitation but are added to the maximum transfer credit allowed and may put applicants at risk of being denied admission due to excessive units. Plus/minus grades: The University uses the grading system of the original college/university in computing and evaluating the GPA of the student for admissions purposes. A C- (grade points computed at less than 2.0) will NOT meet ANY subject requirement, including mathematics or English requirements, for UC transfer eligibility. Pass/ Pass (Credit/ Credit or Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory): more than 14 semester (21 quarter) units taken for Pass credit may be used to meet eligibility requirements. Courses graded pass/not pass are not included in computation of the GPA; however, course and unit credit is granted if a course is passed. A course graded Pass may be used to fulfill a subject requirement as part of the seven-course pattern if the collegiate institution where the course was completed certifies that a Pass is equivalent to a grade of C or better. (Table on next page) 6

7 Berkeley Davis Irvine Los Angeles Merced Riverside San Diego Santa Barbara Santa Cruz Does your campus allow Credit/ Credit (Pass/ Pass or Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) grading to meet major preparation course requirements? Courses taken with Credit/ Credit grading will not meet major preparation course requirements. Required courses for selective majors must be taken for a letter grade, with no grade less than a C. AP or IB examinations with valid scores are acceptable when comparable to a UC Davis course. Academic departments determine whether or not Credit/ Credit coursework satisfies lower-division major requirements. Students should contact the appropriate UC Davis academic department of interest before choosing the Credit/ Credit option. Courses taken with Credit/ Credit grading will not meet major preparation course requirements. Letter grades are required to meet major preparation course requirements for most UCLA majors. Letter grades are preferred and may be required for certain majors. Where Credit/ Credit grades are acceptable, the catalog of the institution offering the course must indicate that Credit is equivalent to a grade of C (2.0) or better. Individual academic departments decide whether or not Credit/ Credit coursework satisfies lower-division major requirements. Students should consult with the academic department of interest before choosing the Credit/ Credit option. Courses taken with Credit/ Credit grading will not meet major preparation course requirements. Individual academic departments decide whether or not Credit/ Credit coursework satisfies lower-division major requirements. Where Credit/ Credit grades are acceptable, the catalog of the institution offering the course must indicate that Credit is equivalent to a grade of (C) or higher. Students are advised to complete major preparation courses for letter grades. Individual academic departments decide whether or not Credit/ Credit coursework satisfies lower-division major requirements. Students should inquire with the department of their major before choosing the Credit/ Credit option. Where Credit/ Credit grades are acceptable, the catalog of the institution offering the course must indicate that Credit is equivalent to a grade of C (2.0) or higher. 7

8 Selection After an applicant has been determined to have met the minimum transfer admission requirements, campuses use faculty-determined criteria and enrollment goals to select students for admission. The eight comprehensive review factors can be found at admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/transfer/reviewed/ Students who attended a UC campus, then enrolled at another college, and intend to return to a UC campus, may have additional considerations in order to be able to satisfy the IGETC and/or UC s Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR): o o Students returning to same UC: IGETC is NOT accepted. Student must satisfy ELWR at UC. Students applying to different UC: IGETC is acceptable. A CCC English course can be used to satisfy ELWR and will receive transfer credit, if the student left the original UC campus in good standing. Does the campus use the personal statement in selection of transfer applicants for UC admission? 6 How is the cumulative GPA used in the admissions process? Does your campus admit students to a specific major or to the campus? Does your campus admit students in an alternate major if they cannot be accommodated in a first-choice major? Berkeley Yes Admissions decisions are based primarily on the overall GPA in UC-transferable courses. To major, except for the College of Letters and Science, which admits students to the academic division in which the major is located. Students are admitted to specific L&S majors only after enrollment and department approval of petition to declare major. Students who cannot be accommodated in a first-choice major will not be admitted in an alternate major. Davis Admission decisions are based primarily on the overall GPA in UC-transferable courses. In selective majors, such as the Biological Sciences and Psychology, both the overall GPA and the GPA for key courses for the major are considered in the selection process. In majors that are not selective, only the overall GPA is considered. To major Davis occasionally admits applicants who have listed an alternate, non-selective major and are academically strong junior-level students, but who did not meet the selective major criteria. Irvine Yes In most majors both the overall and specific GPAs for prerequisite courses are considered in the selection process. To major An applicant may be considered for admission to an alternate major if the applicant cannot be accommodated in his/her first-choice major. 6 While campuses vary in the use of the personal statement, all use it to evaluate gaps in applicants educational history or in the evaluation of applicants for certain scholarships 8

9 Does the campus use the personal statement in selection of transfer applicants for UC admission? 8 How is the cumulative GPA used in the admissions process? Does your campus admit students to a specific major or to the campus? Does your campus admit students in an alternate major if they cannot be accommodated in a first-choice major? Los Angeles Yes The role of the GPA in depends on the major. For applicants to Nursing and Engineering, as well as all majors in the College of Letters and Science, both the overall UC-transferable GPA and the GPA for the courses required for major preparation are considered in the selection process. For applicants to the School of the Arts and Architecture and the School of Theater, Film and Television, only the overall UC- transferable GPA is considered. To major In general, applicants are not considered for admission to alternate majors. Merced Yes Admission decisions are based primarily on performance in preparation for the major course work and overall GPA in UC transferable courses. To major Students who cannot be accommodated in their first-choice major may be admitted to an alternate major if selection criteria are met. Such decisions are made on a case-bycase basis. Riverside Admissions decisions are based primarily on the overall GPA in UC-transferable courses. Selective majors require a specific GPA in major preparation coursework. To major. does not admit transfer students as Undeclared. An applicant may be considered for admission to an alternate major if a valid alternate major is indicated on the application. Such decisions are made on a case-by-case basis. San Diego Admissions decisions are based primarily on the overall GPA in UC-transferable courses. For selective majors in the Jacobs School of Engineering, decisions are based on overall GPA and major preparation. To campus, based on selection criteria (see admissions.ucsd.edu) San Diego may offer students admission into an alternate major if they do not meet selection criteria for a first-choice major. Students applying to an impacted major should choose a non impacted major as their alternate choice. Santa Barbara Admissions decisions are based primarily on the overall GPA in UC-transferable courses. Selective majors require a specific GPA in major preparation coursework. To major. does not admit transfer students as Undeclared. An applicant may be considered for admission to an alternate major if a valid alternate major is indicated on the application. Such decisions are made on a case-by-case basis. Santa Cruz Applicants are screened on the basis of their overall GPA, along with lower-division major preparation and other selection criteria, in determining which students will receive an offer of admission. See To major (most students are admitted as proposed majors and officially declare their major once enrolled at UCSC). Students applying to certain majors in which lowerdivision preparation is essential are screened for admission. See Students are not allowed to select an alternate major (new as of fall 2014). 9

If selection criteria are met and space allows, admitted students may request a major change. Admissions will not switch a student into an impacted major once admitted. After the offer of admission is accepted, students may contact the academic department to learn how to switch majors as a continuing student. Engineering, Biological Sciences, Computer Science, Dance and Music Admitted students may seek a change in major. However, major changes are at the discretion of individual departments and colleges. Other Topics Part-time Enrollment: Students may not apply to UC for part-time enrollment. After a student enrolls on a campus, he or she may petition to attend less than full-time. Each school, college and campus has the discretion and final authority to grant or deny such petitions. UC faculty encourages students to attend full-time; they believe a full-time academic program provides the richest academic experience for students. Appeals Process: If a student is not offered admission and would like to appeal the decision, all campuses require students to submit new and compelling information that was not originally included in the application. The process to submit an appeal can be found on the applicant portal for each campus. 12

13 Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Cambridge Advanced Level (A-Level) examination credit: Designated examinations may be considered equivalent to courses in the subject and may be used to satisfy general education or breadth requirements.
