PREIACE AMEA Botanika Institutunun direktoru, AMEA-nrn mtixbir ijzvid, prof. Valide Ohzade Deur Reuders! Purposeful structural changes, strengthening of innovation and ICT sectors, supporting oj' young scientists and specialists etc. at the ANAS in theframe of Development Concept "Azerbaijan : The Wsion of the Future" signed by the President of Azerbaijan Republic llham Aliyev led to progress in the direction of improving the quality of research. The implementation of great actions is undoubtedly an indication ofthe attention paid by the State to the science. The staff of the Institute of Botany ofanas expanded and improved their activities by joining all these actions. Scientists of the Institute took an active part in the Science Festival which was held in Baku for the first time in the history of ANAS, in First Congress of Scientists of Azerbaijan, in exhibitions, in organization of international laboratories, in the development of rnultidisciplinary projects etc. Innovative activity in the strategically significant areas has achieve.d an extensive successes at our Institute. Innovation indicators are sfficiently high here and the evidencefor this you canfind in the pages of the current issue of the Newsletter. Currently, scientists have good opportunities to continue the activity (to elaborate and apply new technologies) thatwe cawied out up to now. Progress requires new approaches, but its success depends on the fars tedness and responsibility in the development of ideas. We have the chance to direct investigations to an appropriate way by of the development model in order to update the relationship between science, economics and society, which could ensure future stabilin ofthe world. Exhibits and posters were accompanied by the video materials reflecting the field expeditions and laboratory work of scientists of the Institute, as well as travel to the history of the use ofplants in Azerbaijan and the richflora of the Republic. Herbarium specimens conserved at Herbarium Foundation of the Institute, as well as, seed samples, exhibits on natural extracts and dye substances of plant origin, fatty oils, essential oils, aromatic-spicy and medicinal plants, mushrooms, lichens, mosses and algaewere attractiveforvisitors. Recently, monograph "Red List of Endemic Species of the Caucasas Region" has been published in SA. The book is of great importance, as the results of assessment of consentation status of 1752 species from 2791 endemic plant species known from the Caucasus are presented here. High-quality pictures of species and landscapes, as well as comprehensive geographical maps are included in 451-page monograph. Based on the field sutryeys, analysis of literature data and experience of experts the conservation status of rare and endangered endemic plant species, for thefirst time, has been assessed according to the categories and criteria oficnredlist. It should be noticed that only one species (Iris winogradowii Fomin) from Caucasus was included in the first Red Book of ICN (Lucas, 1e78). The above-mentioned monograph on systematic botany wos prepared as the result of activity of botanists from 6 Cqucasian countries in theframework of the project on "Coordination and Development of Plant Red List Assessments.for Caucasus Biodiversity Hotspot" ( years) realized under the auspices of IC { by support of CEPF (Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund) and by supervis'ion of leading experts from Missouri Botanicql Garden (SA). The authors o.f the parts of this vctluable book dedicated to theflora of Azerbaijan are Prof. Valida Alizade, the netional coordinqtar of the project and the scientists of the Institute of Botany ofal'las. 200 national and 950 Caucasian endemics distributed in Azerbaijan are included to the databqse. 5 extinct species, 169 critical endangered, 291 endangered, 272 vulnerable, 242 least concern end 518 species data deficit categoryt have been shown in this book.

JOINT EXPEDITIOIY WITH SWISS BOTANISTS In theframework ofioint project and cooperation between the Institute of Botany of ANAS and Fribourg Natuarl History Museum ond niversity of Fribourg (Switzerland) on September 2014 young scientists of the Institute of Botany and Central Botanical Garden of ANAS Dr. Rashad Salimov and Farid Seyfullayev participated in the joint expedition with Sebastian Betrisey and Daniel Ducry, the experts onflora of Fribourg to the Lankaran-Astara regions. During expedition, they carried out investigations in mixed types of Zelkovaforests on various altitudes of Lankaran, Lerik and Astara regions with the participation of Dr. Hajiaga Safarov and by means of modern methods they studied the phytosociological structure, number and composition of association offorest ecosystem intheregions. 9

On the decision of the Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences from 17 Septembe two international laboratories were founded at the Institute of Botany, ANAS Considering an importance of the community of scientific interests and significance of the researches directed to the protection of biodiversity by the cooperation of the Institute of Botany of ANAS and the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Diversity of the niversity of Frankfurt (Germany) the laboratory called "Biodiversity and Climate Change" was created. This laboratory is directed to the implementation of National Strategy of Biodiversity Protection in Azerbaijan and Global Strateg,, of Plant Conservation (GSPC ) and will provide the possibility to document in time the changes in the diversity of plants occurring under an influence of climate and their adaptation potential and sustainable development as a very actual problem of biology science. The other international laboratoryt called "Forest micology and pathology" created in the framework of cooperation of the Institute of Botany of ANAS andayova State niversity (SA) is based on the long-term joint work experience. The laboratory has the following scientific and practical purposes as investigation on the specifiq and population levels of mushrooms of forest trees by the use of modern morphological and molecular approaches, a review of phylogenesis of critical and pathogenic species, an examination of vectors participated in their spread. Opening the event with the introductory speech, head of Bioadaptation Laboratory of the Department of Fundamental Problems of Biological Productivity of the Institute of Botany, ANAS lrada Huseynova noted that protection ofplants against pathogens especially virus and phytoplasmas is a significant economic problem, as well as one of the basis prioriq directions of the modern scientific research. Agriculture is one of the advanced fields in economy as in other countries of the world. Investigation of pathogens that can cause dffirent diseases in strategically signijicant crop plants, especially more dangerous viruses and phytoplasmas is an actual problem and important for development of the agriculture in our countty. Research of phytoplasma diseases in Azerbaijan started under the leadership of professor Jalal Aliyev in the Department of Fundamental Problems of Biolog,,cal Productivity of the Institute of Botany first in 2005 and is successfully continuing. The important results were obtained during a short time in this area and the results were published in lhe journals with high impactfactors. Scientific activities, extensive internationql links and scientific achievements of the Institute obtoined in the recent years were discussed during the meeting. THE EVENT DEVOTED TO THE LOOTH ANNIVERSARY OF ACADEMICIAN VALIDA TAruYAO WAS HELD AT THE INSTITATE OF BOTANY OF ANAS The event devoted to the I00th Anniversary of Honored scientist Prof. Dr, Full member of Azerbaijan National Academy of Siences Valida Khasbulat Tutayuq was held at the Institute of Botany ofanas. Opening the event by an introductory word Academican-secretary of the Department of Biological and Medical Sciences of ANAS, academician Ahliman Amiraslanov spoke about the honorable and glorious course of life, multilateral activities of Valida Tutayuq, the innovations introduced by her in science as the wide profile scientist morphologist and dendrologist. He noted that in spite of the dfficulties during the Soviet period V Tutayuq had repeatedly speeched on the seminars and conferences in the dffirent countries. Then Director of the Institute of Botany, Prof. Dr Valida Alizade delivered a lecture on the scientific and organizational activities of academician V.Tutayuq. She noted that VTutayuq had worked as a chief of the Department of Botany in the Azerbaijan Agricultural Institute ( ), the Deputy director on Scientific Affairs ( ) and the Director of the Institute of Botany after L.Komarov ofazerbaijanacademy of Sciences during years. In subsequent years, she had leaded the lobarotory in the same Institute ( ) and was a head of Department of Botany and Selection of Azerbaijan Agriculutural Institute after S.Aghamalioghlu (1980) Shewas awarded by dffirent ordens andmedals and by the title " Honored Scientist " ( ). Prof.Dr. Eldar Novruzov, the Deputy director on Scientific Affairs of the Institute of Botany of ANAS, Academician Laboratory of the Institute of Soil and Agrochemistry, Academician Zeynal Akberov, Director of the Institute of Genetic Resources, Prof. Dr Zaur Humbetov, the Head of the Chair of Biolog,t of the Azerbaijan Agricultural niversity, Prof. Dr. Kerem Asadov, the Leading scientiest of the Central Garden of ANAS, Dr. Vugar Kerimov, the Head of Department of Systematics of Higher Plants of the Institute of Botany of ANAS were shared the kind remembrances connecting with LTutayuq, talhed not only about that she was a visible scientist, capable organizer and careful lider but also about her irreplaceable role as a citizen. They gave information about the distribution areas of ten classic relict trees species of Hyrcqnian forests.
