Project Overview Project summary: Background o The McGill Community of students, staff and visitors is often quoted as being over 40,000. As of 2011, approximately 29% of the McGill community came to campus by walking or cycling; the number of cyclists is unknown. o McGill supplies approximately 1800 bike parking spaces downtown, which are regularly at capacity, in addition to the large number of informal parking spaces which are regularly in use. We can assume that McGill has a large, and increasing bike riding population o McGill actively encourages the community to commute by bike to campus. o Beyond the student bike repair collective, The Flat, there aren t many repair locations nearby, and even fewer self repair locations Project Description o We would like to install an outdoor, public bike repair rack in addition to two manual tire pumps. The Bike Repair Rack is: Supplied with (8) theft resistant bike tools, allowing cyclists to make minor repairs LEED compliant Designed for outdoor installation Made with a minimum of 26% recycled materials 100% recyclable at the end of life Labelled with a QR code which offers basic maintenance guidance online The Bike Pump is: Theft resistant and durable

The other pump would be installed somewhere near the Milton Gates. Locations to be finalized by Campus & Space Planning (CSP) in consultation with The Flat Objectives & Outcomes o Further encourage the campus community to cycle to campus by allowing them to address minor repairs immediately and locally o Encourage the community to educate themselves regarding bike repair Project eligibility: Further encourage the campus community to cycle: o potentially reducing our dependence on private vehicles and public transit o increasing physical activity and general health Seeks to educate and engage the McGill community on basic bike repairs Timeframe/Milestones: Timeline o The objective would be to have these installed for the Fall 2013 semester o Upon ordering, delivery is estimated at 6 8 weeks and installation in 1 week. o Ongoing maintenance costs and logistics will be covered by Campus & Space Planning Performance Indicators o Informal monitor of usage by the Flat o Feedback sign o Milestones would be set to evaluate usage after the first and second years based on qualitative analysis Sharing Outcomes o SPF communication tools o Announce on official McGill channels, What s New, host on McGill page o Encourage student groups and the Flat bike collective to publicize the project and encourage the community to use it. 7 Paul Guenther, Mr From: Sent: To: Subject: the flat collective June 3, :36 AM Paul Guenther, Mr Outdoor repair stands and pumps Dear Paul: We, the members of the Flat Bicycle Collective, are excited to hear that you are going forward with the acquisition of the outdoor repair racks and pumps on the downtown campus. Our collective provides workshop space, tools, and instruction to the McGill community as well as the larger Montreal bike community. Because of our funding and organizational model that relies solely on volunteers and generating our own operating costs, our hours of operation are limited to about nine hours per week. Even if we could expand our hours, this still would not satisfy demand and leaves the problem that a flat tire or a loose bolt on one s bicycle rarely conform to our opening hours. Offering students, staff, and faculty the possibility to do minor repairs on their bikes 24/7 would be a tremendous addition to the services we offer. In addition to offering the users of the repair stand and pumps themselves an added value, it might also reduce peak demand at the Flat, thereby reducing long lines for shop users and stress for our volunteers. We would be happy to advertise the new facilities in the shop and introduce our users to them, as well as offering feedback on the best locations and potential problems that may arise over time. To conclude, the Flat strongly supports your plans of acquiring and installing outdoor bicycle repair facilities and hope you will be successful in your application with the Sustainability Projects Fund.
