(2009). Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6 th ed.). Washington DC: Author. Student must purchase a LiveText account to be used in this course and all other program courses ~ LiveText Course Delivery Website ~ Course Description: This is an introductory course for the Educational Specialist (EdS) level counseling program in the College of Education & Professional Studies (CEPS) providing an orientation to the counseling program. In addition, it provides an overview of the CEPS and counseling professional standards, the APA writing style, as well as technology applications in counseling. The student e- portfolio is developed in this class and is used throughout the program of study. Method of Instruction: Online Course Content: Topics include but are not limited to the following: Overview of the Conceptual Framework & Eight Learning Outcomes of the CEPS Counseling Program of Study and Portfolio Development Comprehensive Research LiveText Project review Responsibilities of Graduate Students Responsibilities of College of Education and Professional Studies
2 JSU Information Library Updates Distance Learning APA Writing Style University, College, Department, and Program Policies Technology applications in counseling Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to demonstrate the following: A. Knowledge of 1. The JSU CEPS Conceptual Framework Eight Learning Outcomes as it relates to specific program of study (JSU LO I- VIII) 2. NBPTS as it relates to specific program of study (NBPTS SC- P 12.1; JSU LO V) 3. Basic technology applications including Blackboard and LiveText (JSU LO VII) 4. Expectations of graduate students in the CEPS at JSU (JSU LO V) 5. Electronic Portfolio format, content and rationale (NBPTS SC- P 12.8) 6. Exploratory use of LiveText in a field site setting (JSU LO V) 7. Professional behavior and ethics as established by the CEPS (JSU LO V) B. Skill in 1. Utilizing basic technology applications as well as Blackboard and LiveText technologies to complete projects (NBPTS SC- P 12.8; JSU LO VII) 2. Participating in professional behaviors set forth by the university and CEPS (JSU LO V) 3. Reflective practice (NBPTS SC- P 12.11; JSU LO V) 4. Reflective practice of one s learning style and personality type (NBPTS SC- P 12.11; JSU LO V) C. Dispositions that 1. Recognize the importance of adhering to ethical, best practice, and diversity standards set by the profession (NBPTS SC- P 12.11; JSU LO V) 2. Recognize the need for continued examination of one s interpersonal style (NBPTS SC- P 12.11; JSU LO V) 3. Reflect better acceptance of others perspective (NBPTS SC- P 12.11; JSU LO V) 4. Commit to the policies set forth by the university and the CEPS (JSU LO V) Course Requirements: Library database manipulation LiveText Project (Major Course Artifact) Completion of Advisement Student Information Form on Portfolio with signature of understanding completed Signature line for JSU account (include student ID#) Addition of Graphic, standards, and video- streaming to portfolio Article Reviews

Video reflection Resources: Online Course Materials LiveText Portfolio University Library Virtual Class Presentations University Website Outside Sites Attendance: Students are expected to attend all class meetings in virtual classrooms via Blackboard (Bb) Collaborate Classroom. The university attendance policy will be followed in the course whereby students missing more than 20% of scheduled virtual class meetings are subject to a failing grade in the course. Should a student miss an exam for a legitimate reason (determined by the instructor), the student should notify the instructor prior to the exam date. If the instructor determines that the absence is legitimate, a make- up exam will be given at a time determined by the instructor. The absence will still count toward the accumulated absence total. Missed exams, reports, projects, and assignments without instructor approval will be assigned a score of 0.It is the responsibility of the student to advise the instructor to change an absence to a tardy. Professional Expectations: Students are responsible for all material covered in class, textbook readings, and assignments due or made during any absence from the virtual class meetings. Due dates for assignments must be adhered to and late assignments may be subject to grade reduction as determined by the instructor. Make- up work is at the discretion of the instructor. Students are expected to exemplify professionalism in dress, demeanor, conduct, and speech. Cell phones and other electronic devices that generate sound MUST be turned off when entering the virtual classroom. Disruption of the virtual class meeting, whether by leaving or entering the classroom at will, inappropriate noise making, or other inconsiderate behavior, will not be tolerated. Bringing children or other unauthorized visitors into the virtual classroom is strongly discouraged and permission from the instructor is required before this action will be permitted. Academic Honesty: The University and College of Education and Professional Studies Policies, including Academic Honesty and Code of Conduct detailed in the JSU Student Handbook will be enforced in this class.
4 College of Education & Professional Studies Honesty Policy Cheating: 1 st Offense A student who cheats on an examination (or any other graded work) will receive a failing grade ( F ) in the course. Cheating: 2 nd Offense A student who cheats on an examination (or any other graded work) will be dismissed from the program of study, and will not be allowed to enroll in any other program of study in the college of Education & Professional Studies. Plagiarism: 1 st Offense A student who intentionally (deliberately) plagiarizes will receive a failing grade ( F ) in the course. In addition, the student will be required to complete a remedial seminar on plagiarism. Failure to do so will result in an automatic 2 nd offense. Plagiarism: 2 nd Offense A student who intentionally (deliberately) plagiarizes a second time will be dismissed from the program of study, and will not be allowed to enroll in any other program in the College of Education & Professional Studies at Jacksonville State University. NOTES: 1. It should be noted that the occurrence of cheating or plagiarizing is cumulative, i.e., it carries over to any other course taught in the College of Education & Professional Studies. 2. If a student wishes to appeal at any level of the Honesty Policy, she (he) is to follow the College of Education & Professional Studies grade appeal process. Course Evaluation: Evaluation will be based on the quality of the student's completion of the course requirements. Acquisition of competence will be evaluated on projects and participation.
