1 Capital City Design Review Panel Member s Biographies April 2013 Megan Antcliff Megan is the Project Director for the Tonsley Park Redevelopment at the Department of Manufacturing, Innovation, Trade, Resources and Energy (DMITRE) and responsible for the economic development strategy for Tonsley Park, site branding and industry investment strategies, as well as ensuring the project meets high-level departmental objectives. Megan draws on 12 years of experience in commercial development across the disciplines of urban design, landscape and built form as an designer focused on strategic planning, site master planning, urban design and development. Lu Balsamo Lu has over 40 years of experience in architecture and urban design. Lu s expertise is in project direction, site master planning, urban design, facilities planning and design. He has extensive experience in defence, educational, health care, performing arts projects and retail. He has been involved in pre-project definition work including strategic facilities planning in health, education, defence, retail and arts facilities. His communication and people skills are highly valued in the complex role of master planning which requires sensitive exploration of client needs. A former Principal of HASSELL, Lu has had a leadership role on many of the firm s major projects in design, documentation and administration. Daniel Bennett Daniel Bennett is an award winning Landscape Architect and Urban Designer with over 15years experience in Australia, Asia and the United Kingdom. Daniel is a creative and talented designer who offers passion, enthusiasm and thorough analysis of issues and opportunities across a wide range of sectors, focusing on the public domain. Daniel contributes to the wider design community. He is currently Vice President of the SA Chapter of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, contributing to the design discourse in South Australia and advocating the benefits of Landscape Architects. He is an Independent Member of the Adelaide Hills Council Development Assessment Panel, writes occasionally and is an active user of Twitter. Page 1 of 10

2 Catherin Bull Dr Catherin Bull is Emeritus Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Melbourne and Adjunct Professor at QUT. She has led national and international consultancies in landscape architecture and urban design, been a Commissioner in the Land and Environment Court of NSW and an academic for over 20 years, teaching, researching and supervising doctoral students, most recently as the Elisabeth Murdoch Professor of Landscape Architecture. As an advocate for better quality planning and design she chairs and serves on planning and design review panels and boards across Australia, including the National Capital Authority, ACT Planning and Land Authority, Sydney Olympic Park Authority and the Board for Urban Places Queensland advising government and industry on open space and urban design matters. She was made a member of the Order of Australia in 2009 in recognition of her contribution to landscape architecture and urban design. Rob Cheesman Rob Cheesman founded Cheesman Architects in 1986 to integrate economic, environmental and social principles with excellent architecture. Under his hands-on leadership, the practice has continued to be highly successful and much awarded while providing exemplary and comprehensive services in architecture, master planning and urban design. He recently retired as longstanding and founding director and continues to practise in a part time capacity He is passionate about the urban design and master planning context, was a foundation member and chair of both the City of Adelaide and South Australian State Government Urban Design Advisory panels and until recently was the Presiding Member of the City of Adelaide Development Assessment Panel. He has been a part-time/sessional Commissioner in the South Australian Environmental and Resources Development Court for over twenty years He is a Senior Counsellor and past Chapter and National President of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA), member and Chair of National Awards Juries and the recipient of a number of design, research, and civic awards. He was the inaugural recipient of the RAIA (SA Chapter) Presidents Medal in Page 2 of 10

3 Tanya Court Tanya Court is the Coordinator of the Landscape Architecture and Bachelor of Design Studies Program at the University of Adelaide. She joined the School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design in 2006 from the University of Melbourne. Tanya has over 12 years of professional practice experience, specialising in civic and institutional landscapes, with many of her design projects winning Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) awards. Tanya s design work is highly regarded with over 15 significant projects designed, documented and constructed in and around Melbourne. Tanya originally trained as an artist, before attending RMIT to study landscape architecture. Tanya has continued to maintain an arts practice with a sculpture commission, helmet, with Cassandra Chilton recently completed at Heide Museum of Modern Art, Bulleen, Victoria. In 2009 this project won an AILA Vic Award for Design, Special Commendation for Art in the Landscape. The Route Followed is currently a public art project shortlisted for the Lightsview development in Northfield. The Rundle Project: Integrated Public Art Masterplan for Rundle Street, Adelaide with Wax Design and SPUD was awarded the 2009 PIA SA Minister s Award for Planning Excellence as well as a 2009 AILA SA Award for Planning. Her project, Balaclava Walk, with MGS Architects was awarded the Australia Award for Urban Design in John Denton John Denton is a Director of Denton Corker Marshall Pty Ltd, one of the most significant and successful Australian-owned international architecture and design practices, with offices in Melbourne, London and Jakarta. The practice is noted for projects such as the Melbourne Museum, Anzac Hall at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, and the new Visitor Centre and Interpretive Museum at Stonehenge and the new Civil Justice Centre in Manchester, UK. John is a Life Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects and in 1996 he was awarded the RAIA Gold Medal, sharing it with partners Bill Corker and Barrie Marshall. In 2006 he undertook a part-time role as Victorian Government Architect, advising the Premier and Cabinet on achieving better architecture and urban design outcomes for Government, and handing this work on in June In 2007 he received a Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) from Monash University, where he is an Adjunct Professor of Architecture in the Faculty of Art and Design. Among a number of similar activities past and ongoing, he is currently Chair of the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA). Page 3 of 10

4 Mariano De Duonni Mariano joined HASSELL in 1989, working in a wide range of projects as a principal design architect. He has developed keen interests and expertise on diverse projects within a variety of sector markets including education, urban design, commercial and institutional. In addition to his work in Adelaide and South Australia, Mariano has worked on projects in various parts of Australia and Asia. Mariano s abilities in design, his passionate pursuit of excellence and his communication and collaboration skills are widely recognised. Mariano was appointed Managing Principal of HASSELL, Adelaide in 2003 and International Co-Head of Architecture for the HASSELL group in Matt Davis Matt is a lecturer in Architecture at University of South Australia, Director of Davis & Davis Architects, and former Design Leader of 5000+, an Integrated Design Strategy for inner Adelaide. Matt combines extensive professional experience in the design and delivery of complex projects and precincts with a scholarly understanding of architecture, design and cities. Peter Dungey Peter is an architect and urban designer with extensive experience in strategic public realm projects, urban design policy formulation and architectural design. Award winning projects in both the macro and micro ends of the design spectrum - the complex challenges of designing cities for people and the more personal delights of architectural detailing - reflect his broad-based interest in design. He brings critiquing skills developed over four decades of involvement in design and design juries, architectural education and development assessment panels. Page 4 of 10

5 Mads Gaardboe Mads Gaardboe has been a practicing architect in Denmark, Tanzania, Australia, and the UK, where until 2002 he had a practice in London. He has worked on a variety of projects but specialised in urban design and hotel developments internationally. For a period of time he was attached to the National Capital Development Commission, Canberra. In 1996 he was appointed Professor and Head of the Department of Architecture at Liverpool John Moore s University and Associate Director of Liverpool School of Art and Design. In 2004 he left Europe to take up the position as Professor of Architecture at the University of South Australia. He is Head of the School of Art, Architecture and Design, and frequently represents the School and University nationally and internationally. Among contributions to committees and boards nationally, he was Deputy Presiding member of the City of Adelaide Urban Design Advisory Panel, has been a member of the City of Adelaide Development Assessment Panel 2007 to He is a member of the Australian Deans of the Built Environment and Design (ADBED), and of the Advisory Panel for Architecture, University of Canberra and for agideas. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA), the Architects Registration Board (U.K.) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Art (U.K.). Stuart Harrison Stuart Harrison is a practicing architect registered in Victoria, lecturer, broadcaster and architectural advocate. He is director of the award-winning firm Harrison and White Architects (HAW), based in Brunswick, Melbourne. He teaches in architecture at RMIT, lecturing in design, architectural history and technology. He founded and co-hosts The Architects on Melbourne RRR and has interviewed architects and designers from around the world. James Hayter James is one of Australia s most respected landscape architects whose passion and beliefs inspires and leads the others in the profession. His focus on improving the health and productivity of our cities mirrors a global movement in new landscape architecture that will positively change the way our cities are planned and inhabited. As the founder of Oxigen, James brings many years of experience and skills in landscape architecture, urban design, strategic planning and collaboration. Through James leadership, Oxigen has become one of Australia s most respected and successful specialised landscape architecture and urban design consultancies. James is highly sought after for providing independent urban design advice to the ERD Court, SA Government, metropolitan Councils and development review panels. He brings comprehensive technical skills and a desire to try innovative ways of resolving the requirements of a project. Page 5 of 10

6 Michael Hegarty Michael Hegarty is a UK registered architect and urban designer and founded his own architecture practice in He has delivered large scale urban renewal and collaborated with world leading architects including Daniel Libeskind. Michael migrated to Australia, leaving his role as the Director at PLACE, the Northern Ireland Centre for Architecture & Built Environment. He has over 25 years in the industry and has acquired an array of qualifications, awards and publications for his outstanding work. He is now Principal Architect and Manager at GHD, Victoria Square, Adelaide and leads a multi-disciplinary integrated design team undertaking major architectural and urban design projects. Michael has worked with Government and communities on large and strategic urban renewal developments including redevelopment of former military and security sites for peacetime civic uses as part of the Northern Ireland peace process; developing models of public engagement and community participation for major mixed use regeneration, public art and large scale social housing; promoting quality architecture and urban design within Government and to the public. Gavin Kain Gavin Kain has national and international experience as a Designer and Urban Planner in Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin, Dubai, Vancouver and London. Gavin excels in commercial and cultural developments and is the leader of Woods Bagot s Lifestyle Sector in Australia. He has a strong interest in regionalism and sustainability. Gavin s key strength is aligning design solutions with key project drivers whether they are business / economically focused or socially / culturally focused and most specifically creating outcomes that satisfy both. Gavin currently leads the design of the Adelaide Convention Centre Redevelopment and has led the Masterplan Strategy for the Blueprint for Christchurch rebuild in New Zealand. He is currently advising the New South Wales and New Zealand Government s on infrastructure projects. John Maitland John studied at Adelaide University (1970) and established his own practice in 1977, now Energy Architecture. His architecture was informed by the environment before it was fashionable, and now he consults to the development market bringing the subdivision to more sustainable levels; and now offers a range of sustainable project homes. His role as principal of Energy Architecture has driven sustainability as a real agenda for the practice, and projects now encompass commercial and institutional buildings as well as residential developments and dwellings in South Australia and interstate; winning over 30 awards both state and national. 7 John teaches at universities, and presents regular seminars (Australia and New Zealand) as well as running Energy Architecture, The Aldinga Arts EcoVillage Development Company and NEXT You re Home the Project home business. Simon McPherson Simon is a prominent Urban Designer and Architect registed in Victoria, with advanced international qualifications and a broad range of high level experience in both public and private sectors, and leads a dynamic, innovative urban design practice. Simon is the Managing Director of SJB Urban. Simon previously worked in the Urban Design Unit of the Victorian Department of Planning and Community Development on a broad range of urban design project types and scales, including strategic planning, design assessment and advice, policy and guidelines and urban design projects. John Morphett John was associated with the design firm HASSELL for over forty years. After 15 years as managing director and a further 3 years as chairman he retired in He was involved in diversification of the firm into allied areas and expansion into new geographical areas throughout Australia and into Hong Kong, Thailand and the Philippines. Major architectural projects for which he has been responsible include: the Adelaide Festival Centre, the Sir Donald Bradman Grandstand at the Adelaide Oval, Melbourne Central, the Australian Ballet Headquarters, the Samual Way Law Courts and numerous educational and performing arts facilities. Peter Mould Peter Mould was NSW Government Architect from 2006 to He has over 35 years experience in Australia and overseas in both the private sector and government. Peter is a member of the City of Sydney Design Advisory Panel, the Sydney Olympic Park Design Review Panel, the Sydney Opera House Eminent Architects Panel and the Sydney Opera House Conservation Council. He has served on NSW Heritage Council, the Central Sydney Planning Committee, and was Deputy President of the NSW Architects Registration Board. His projects have received numerous awards for architecture, urban design and adaptive reuse. His experience is in the design, documentation and construction of major public architectural and urban design projects. Peter is a Life Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects, former Vice President of the NSW Chapter and Visiting Professor at the Faculty of the Built Environment, University of NSW Page 7 of 10

8 Bob Nation Over the past 40 years, Bob has been responsible for a diverse range of projects, from small houses to a city in Thailand, which was the largest construction project in the world in the 1990s. Commercial/civic/public projects he has worked on include: the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, the Australian Embassy in Beijing, the Royal Alfred Quays in Surfers Paradise, the adaptive re-use of the British Rail offices at Marylebone Station to the Landmark Hotel, a resort city development in Spain, the Government Office Tower in Hong Kong, and Antarctic Division Australia headquarters in Hobart. Between 1990 and 1994, the practice was responsible for more than four million square metres of development. In 2000, his design submission won the design competition for an 85-storey residential tower, World Tower at World Square, in Sydney, for Meriton Apartments. Bob has been involved with the RAIA for more than 40 years, having worked initially as an editor of the Tasmanian Chapter s magazine in the mid-1960s. From 1978, he served in a number of roles on the Tasmanian Chapter Council, including Chairman of the Board of Architectural Education, and remained actively involved before moving overseas. Shelley Penn Shelley Penn is a practising Melbourne-based architect whose work includes advice to government and the private sector on strategic architectural and urban design for public places across all scales. In addition to her award-winning project work, which has been published and exhibited nationally and internationally, she has held a number of significant positions. In June 2012, Shelley completed a four year term as Deputy Chair of the Heritage Council of Victoria. She was the Associate Victorian Government Architect within the Department of Premier and Cabinet from 2006 until 2010, where her role was focussed on providing strategic advice to government, and on advocacy for better outcomes throughout Victoria s built environment. She was also Design Director in the Office of the NSW Government Architect in , a board member of the Architects Registration Board of Victoria, and a board member of the Linking Melbourne Authority. In mid 2011, Shelley co-chaired a review of the planning processes for Barangaroo, a 22 hectare development located at the north-western edge of Sydney's CBD. She is a current member of the inaugural Victorian Design Review Panel and recently served on the Riverbank Design Review Panel. Shelley is the National President of the Australian Institute of Architects and Chair of the National Capital Authority. Page 8 of 10

9 Susan Phillips Susan Phillips is a founding partner of Phillips/Pilkington Architects and has been Director in charge of many of the practice s award winning buildings, including Seymour College Performing Arts Centre, Woodcroft College Administration Building, Wilderness School Hall and Monarto Zoological Park Visitor s Centre. Susan has significant experience working with Adelaide City Council. She was a member of the Urban Design Panel and the joint State Government City of Adelaide Development Plan Review Committee. She has led a number of workshops with elected members and planning staff on achieving good design outcomes. She has a commitment to Environmental Design as evidenced by the Environmental Awards received for the Practice s work. Susan has extensive community engagement experience and has a keen interest in urban design, having been a member of a number of Urban Design Panels and running workshops for State and Local Government. Andrew Russell Born in Chester England Andrew Russell immigrated with family to Hobart, Tasmania where he received his early education and developed his love of designing and building things. Having then moved to South Australia Andrew received a Bachelor of Architecture (Hons) and an MBA from University of Adelaide. Andrew then commenced a career in local government with the City of Adelaide becoming Chief Architect, restoring and redeveloping the Adelaide Town Hall, designing and implementing housing as part of the residential program in the 1980 s and 90 s and was the inaugural Urban Design Manager initiating Streets, Parks and Parklands, the City s first urban design public realm guidelines. In 1997 Andrew started his career in private urban design practice as Urban Design Manager with KBR and later as Managing Director of boutique planning and design consultancy QED Pty Ltd where he led master plan teams for the University of Adelaide and many urban design frameworks across Australia. Andrew Russell is currently Manager, Environment and Advisory with Aurecon and is recognised for his role on the leadership team for the Adelaide Riverbank Master Plan and as project leader of the design competition winning Riverbank Pedestrian Bridge team. Andrew also lectures in urban design in the planning course at the University of South Australia and is recognised for his urban design advocacy role in the development assessment process and urban design panels. 10 Jason Schulz Jason is a registered architect with nearly 20 years experience in practicing architecture in South Australia. As a Director of DASH Architects, he has extensive expertise across the full suite of project delivery services, in particular specialising in architecture that is responsive to context - physical, social and cultural. Jason also specialises in the conservation, policy development, and adaptive reuse of heritage places, and has been appointed to the Department of Environment and Natural Resource s Heritage Council, and is also a member of the Department of Planning and Local Government s Local Heritage Advisory Committee. Siobhan Toohill With a focus on creating long-term value for organisations and communities, Siobhan evaluates emerging issues (from climate change risk to social wellbeing to supply chain ethics) as seen through the eyes of stakeholders - and typically reframes these issues as opportunities. Previously, Siobhan established the sustainability function at Australian property group Stockland, garnering senior leadership support, and leading significant cultural change, culminating in the organisation recognised as the world's most sustainable property group by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index in Further recognition included membership of the Corporate Knights Global 100 (World Economic Forum, Davos) , Australia New Zealand Climate Leadership Index , and Ethical Investor's Most Sustainable Company of the Year With over 15 years experience in architecture, urban design and sustainability, Siobhan has played a significant role in placemaking and the masterplanning of globally awarded large-scale urban projects across Australia, including the Rouse Hill Regional Centre, Sydney ($1.5B), Victoria Harbour, Melbourne Docklands ($4.5B) and numerous Sydney town centres and harbour foreshore sites. As a director (now Deputy Chair) of the Green Building Council of Australia and the Australian Building Code of Australia Siobhan shaped national building standards and rating tools including the recently launched Green Star Communities. Nick Tridente Nick has been the principal designer for Tridente Architects since its inception in He participates at all levels of design and project development to ensure a rigorous standard is maintained within the studio. He has extensive experience with the design of facilities in every market sector.
