This round table event, The Future of Industry Accreditation: Disrupting the Profession, deals with the impact on accreditation in professional areas, in particular in accountancy, as tertiary education pathways expand to offer greater choice for learners. Free public access to online courses has challenged the traditional university operating model, allowing outside organisations to be able to become licensed providers of educational services and professional qualifications which are available to students everywhere. The purpose of the round table is to: offer new potential models for professional accreditation bodies; solicit informed perspectives from business and university sectors on new models; consider practical future scenarios for the profession. 1
2 An Introduction Just as online learning is becoming more mainstream in the tertiary sector, business and industry is also showing greater interest in globalisation and technology impacting professional development, employee training, recruitment and even public relations strategy. MOOC provider Coursera, for example, recently announced a professional development category for education. Udemy is both a platform and a marketplace where businesses can access a suite of over 1,000 targeted training courses, create custom learning portals for corporate training and build their own online courses. Coursolve is an initiative that connects MOOCs with organisations to empower participants to solve real-world problems. According to the founders, the model appears to be delivering better experiences and career opportunities for students, with companies and participants staying engaged with one another long after course completion. The launch of the IMF Online Economics Learning for a Global Classroom is relevant to an organisation such as CA ANZ because of the size and scope of their training program. In partnering with edx, the IMF is able to transform their training courses in economics and finance for officials in 188 countries. The modules are a mixture of online podcasts and workshops supplemented by face-to-face sessions. Participants download datasets and crunch the numbers themselves to ensure they have understood the macroeconomic concepts and can use the tools. Understanding is tested more frequently and systematically than would be possible in a classroom setting. The feedback has been positive with participants using the courses to refresh their memory, with the online information serving as a virtual coach. Free public access to online courses has challenged the traditional university operating model which allowed them to be the gatekeepers for the professions because of their monopoly on the granting of qualifications. Now non-university organisations may be able to become licensed providers with the potential to engage with a wider reach of students through online access. This has profound implications for professional accreditation bodies. The round table will address: university developments in online learning; business needs and preferences; opportunities available to professional bodies; the feasibility of continuing status quo; the feasibility of micro-credentialing badges. 2
