2 The Hong Kong Polytechnic University The origin of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) can be traced back to 1937 with the founding of the first publicly-funded post-secondary technical institution in Hong Kong the Government Trade School. The School was renamed the Hong Kong Technical College in In August 1972, the Hong Kong Polytechnic was formally established, taking over the campus and staff of the Hong Kong Technical College. The Institution assumed full university status in November In terms of number of students, it is the largest tertiary institution in Hong Kong funded by the HKSAR Government through the University Grants Committee. It has a total student population of over 32,000 by headcount in 2013/14. Most of the classes, studios and workshops will be delivered at the HKAS premises. Aims and Objectives The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Applied and Media Arts provides a creative, experimental and interdisciplinary study of applied and media arts, developing students as creative practitioners with critical framework for analytical reflection of the practices in the culture and creative industries. Career Opportunities Graduates are expected to become reflective contributors in their respective fields, capable of pursuing careers as professional designers, corporate image creators and media artists. They will be able to capitalise on their all-round trainings in creativity and aesthetic sensibility, which are essential elements of success in a knowledge-based economy. Entry Requirements A recognised Associate Degree or a Higher Diploma or equivalent qualification in related disciplines. Applicants from unrelated disciplines but with demonstrated foundation knowledge in applied and media arts may also be considered. Those who do not possess the above-mentioned qualifications but have reached the age of 25 at commencement of study may apply as mature applicants. Mature applicants should possess relevant working experience in supervisory/ managerial positions and have completed post-secondary studies in related fields. 50 PROGRAMME FEATURES AND CAMPUS FACILITIES Academic Staff PolyU SPEED has a faculty of more than 60 academic staff, with a doctoral degree ratio approaching 65%. To ensure a sustainable quality faculty, the ratio of academics with doctoral degree qualification will be progressively increased to around 75% within the next three to five years. The School also encourages and promotes scholarly activities with a view to underpinning the teaching of top-up honours degree programmes. The faculty members of PolyU SPEED are experienced academics and professionals in their own fields and are committed to providing quality learning experience for students. They hail not only from Hong Kong but also from overseas and the Chinese mainland, enabling students to benefit from a wider range of international expertise. Learning and Teaching All PolyU-SPEED award programmes are developed and taught by full-time faculty members as well as experienced visiting lecturers of PolyU SPEED. 51 Study Pattern Full-time students are normally required to study 15 credits in each semester. Generally speaking, they may enjoy a summer break after two semesters in an academic year. Part-time students normal study load is 6 credits in each semester, except that during the summer term the normal study load is 3 credits. Under the normal study load, the number of class contact hours per week is about 15 for full-time students and 6 for part-time students. While most of the classes for full-time students will be held in the daytime, some classes may be arranged in the evening. Classes for parttime students will normally be held on weekday evenings and/ or Saturday afternoon. Assessment To enable students to demonstrate that they have met the intended learning outcomes of the academic programmes and fulfilled the requirements of each subject, appropriate methods of assessment will be employed. These methods usually include assignments, projects, tests and examinations. State-of-the-art Campus Facilities Most of the classes of PolyU-SPEED top-up honours degree programmes will be held on PolyU Hung Hom Bay Campus and PolyU West Kowloon Campus. Classes of part-time programmes will normally be conducted on PolyU Hung Hom Bay Campus while those of full-time programmes will be conducted on PolyU Hung Hom Bay Campus or PolyU West Kowloon Campus.* Both PolyU Hung Hom Bay Campus and PolyU West Kowloon Campus are equipped with state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities that offer a vigorous environment for all-round student development. All students of PolyU-SPEED top-up honours degree programmes will have access to libraries, computing and sports facilities. Full-time students will also be eligible for health services. * For Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Applied and Media Arts, most of the classes will be held at the premises of the Hong Kong Art School (the collaborating institution of the programme), while some classes will be delivered on PolyU Hung Hom Bay Campus and PolyU West Kowloon Campus. 54 Co-curricular Activities (mainly for full-time students) Complementary Studies Programme The Complementary Studies Programme is offered to supplement the formal curriculum. It is intended to widen students horizons, broaden their intellectual outlook and develop their skills and knowledge in different areas. A combination of interesting and uptrend courses are organised within the Programme. Physical Education Programme Through physical activities and sports, the programme is designed to help students train their physique. Talks, Seminars and Workshops Various professional talks, seminars and workshops are conducted to facilitate students career and personal development. 55 FEES AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Registration Fee Successful applicants will be required to pay a registration fee of HK$5,000 (being part of the tuition fee for the first semester) normally within 10 days from the issue date of the School s notification of offer. Registration fees paid are normally neither refundable nor transferable. Applicants who have settled the registration fee but are subsequently admitted to any undergraduate programmes funded by the University Grants Committee (UGC) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) or other PolyU s self-financing programmes* may apply for refund of HK$4,000 (HK$1,000 will be deducted as administration fee) according to the timelines specified below: Application for refund on or before 15 August 2015: within 2 weeks from the issue date of the offer letter from the institution concerned Application for refund after 15 August 2015: within 2 working days from the issue date of the offer letter from the institution concerned Refund of registration fee will not be considered for applicants who do not observe the above timelines after receiving the offer from UGC-funded/ PolyU self-financed programmes. Tuition Fee The tuition fee is charged on a semester basis. Balance of the tuition fee for the first semester together with the caution money of HK$390 will be due for payment in mid- July Financial Assistance Local full-time students enrolled in PolyU-SPEED award programmes are eligible to apply for means-tested Financial Assistance Scheme for Post-secondary Students (FASP) or Non-means-tested Loan Scheme for Post-secondary Students (NLSPS) while local part-time students are eligible to apply for Extended Non-means-tested Loan Scheme (ENLS) offered by the Government s Student Financial Assistance Agency (SFAA). 57 Admission Policy Applicants must prioritise their choice of study. They are required to indicate their preference on programmes on offer, and may make as many as 4 choices. Applications will be processed according to applicants preference of study. Applicants are not allowed to submit more than one application for the PolyU-SPEED award programmes. In case the applicants wish to change their indicated choice after submission of their applications, they may submit written requests to the School. The School reserves the right not to consider any requests submitted after the commencement of the selection process. Applicants may at the same time apply for PolyU award programmes offered by PolyU Faculties/ Departments through SPEED (For details, please refer to the respective brochure obtainable at SPEED). The applications for the programmes leading to PolyU awards and PolyU-SPEED awards will be handled separately and an applicant may receive offers for both types of programmes. However, each applicant is allowed to register on one programme only, between the PolyU and PolyU-SPEED award programmes. Those who have registered on a PolyU-SPEED award programme and subsequently wish to accept an offer from a PolyU award programme offered through SPEED will need to inform SPEED for withdrawal from the registered programme first. Applications for refund of the registration fee paid for the PolyU-SPEED award programme will be considered according to the refund policy stated on P.53 of this brochure. Admission of Non-local Students A "non-local student" is defined as one who requires a student visa to study in Hong Kong or is staying in Hong Kong under the "Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates" (IANG). Non-local applicants who possess only a visitor or a tourist visa can neither be registered as students nor commence their studies until they have obtained student visas. If one holds a dependent visa, s/ he does not require a student visa and will be regarded as a local student. If one holds a work permit and takes up a part-time programme, s/ he will also be regarded as a local student. If one holds neither a work permit nor a dependent visa, it is unlikely that the Immigration Department of the HKSAR Government will grant him/her a student visa to take up a part-time programme. Throughout the course of study, it is the responsibility of individual students to ensure that their visas are valid. For details, please contact the Immigration Department of the HKSAR Government (Tel: ; Website: Applicants who apply for admission with non-local qualifications are required to attain the English language requirement below: IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 550 (paper based) / 213 (computer based) / 80 (Internet based) The above requirement may be exempted for applicants who have completed sub-degree programmes with English as the medium of instruction. Non-local students are not eligible for financial assistance of any kind provided by the HKSAR Government. Apart from tuition fee, there will be other expenses such as those for air tickets, accommodation, local transportation, insurance and textbooks. Selection of Applicants Applications will be considered on the basis of the information (such as academic achievements, professional qualifications and working experience) provided on submission of applications. Interview and/or test as part of the selection process may be arranged and shortlisted applicants will be notified by post, via or by phone. Additional information provided after the commencement of the selection process will be considered only if time permits. Announcement of Application Results Application results will be announced via the admission website at Successful applicants will receive an official notification by post normally about one month after the closing date for applications.
