Houston Power Services Company Power Factor Correction Sales and Service for Today s Commercial and Industrial Customer

Power Factor Introduction This tool will provide you and your company an easy explanation of what power factor is, and to answer the following most asked questions: What is Power Factor? Why should I improve My Power Factor? What is the Return on Investment? What is the next step?
What is Power Factor? PF Power factor is the term used to describe how efficiently a facility utilizes all of the electrical power it consumes. KW- is working power (also called Actual power or Active Power), the power used for inductive loads, such as compressor motors, computer power supplies and lighting ballasts. KVAR- is reactive power, which is power that creates the magnetic field for inductive loads. All inductive loads require magnetic current to operate. KVA- is apparent power, which is the combination of both KW (working power) and KVAR (magnetizing current).
Power Factor Correction Systems Once a power factor correction system has been installed on a customer s side of the utility metering, power factor penalties or reduction in billing demand is achieved. Houston Power Services Company has over the last twenty years (20) installed over 6,000 successful power factor correction systems nationwide. At no cost to Honeywell or it s clients, HPSCO will generate a proposal guaranteeing savings versus cost.
A simple analogy: After a long day at work, you order your favorite draft beer to settle the dust. The golden amber, hopefully, smooth tasting part of the beer is represented by KW. KW
The beer arrives and you are delayed on settling the dust of the day due to the foamy head atop your cool mug of ale. The foamy head represents KVAR. KVAR
The total contents of you mug of ale is KVA, which is a summation of KW (the golden amber beer) and KVAR (the foamy head). KVA KVAR KW PF = KW» KVA Power factor (PF) is the ratio of working power KW to apparent power KVA. Looking at the beer mug, the power factor would be the ratio of beer (KW) to the beer plus foam (KVA). PF = KW PF = Beer KW + KVAR Beer + Foam
Thus, for a given KVA: The more foam you have (the higher the percentage of KVAR), the lower your ratio of KW (beer) to KVA (beer plus foam). Thus, the lower your power factor. The less foam you have (the lower the percentage of KVAR), the higher your ratio of KW (beer) to KVA (beer plus foam). In fact, as your foam (or KVAR) approaches zero, your power factor approaches 1.0. Our beer mug analogy is a bit simplistic. In reality, when we calculate KVA, we must determine the "vectorial summation" of KVAR and KW. In the mug of beer analogy with a corrected power factor KVAR would be very small the foamy head would be almost zero KW and KVA would be almost equal or more beer less foam
Why Should I Improve My Power Factor? Lower utility fees by: a:) Reducing peak KW billing demand. Recall that inductive loads, which require reactive power caused your low power factor. This increase in required reactive power (KVAR) causes an increase in required apparent power (KVA), which is what the utility is supplying. So, a facility's low power factor causes the utility to have to increase its generation and transmission capacity in order to handle this extra demand.
b:) Eliminating the power factor penalty. Utilities usually charge customers an additional fee when their power factor is less than (In fact, some utilities are not obligated to deliver electricity to their customer at any time the customer's power factor falls below 0.85.) Thus, you can avoid this additional fee by increasing your power factor.
What is the Return on Investment? Power Factor Correction Paybacks or return on investment is 12 to 24 months Overall energy savings ranges from 5-30 percent Guaranteed savings for 3 years
What is the next step? Houston Power Services Company can help determine if your facility is a candidate with as little as one month s utility statement. 4 easy steps to job completion: 1. Qualify the customer 2. Review 12 months utility bills/generate customer proposal 3. Customer purchase order/site survey 4. Installation of Power Factor Correction System
