WELCOME TO E-LEARNING! e-learning courses offer convenience and flexibility to busy, adult learners. We provide students with the same quality courses offered on-campus without the classroom attendance. We are accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and operate on a 15-week semester schedule (Fall, Winter, Spring/Summer). THREE CO MMO N MISCONCE PTI ONS ABOUT E-LEARNIN G: "I can take this class and do the work whenever I want." Generally, e-learning is not open enrollment or open entry/open exit. The courses follow the college semester calendar with starting and ending dates, testing period dates, and homework assignment dates. "I can do it all on the Internet." Some e-learning courses require campus attendance for review sessions, lab sessions, and testing. "This will be so easy!" It is not an easier method of learning than traditional, in-the-classroom courses. You will need to be a selfmotivated, independent learner to be successful. WH AT IS "BL ACK BOARD"? Blackboard is an Internet course content management system. Faculty place their course materials at the website, and students access their on-line courses there. Personal Computers (PCs) come with Internet Explorer installed, and we recommend you use this browser to access Blackboard: MacIntosh computers have Safari Internet which also works with Blackboard. HOW D OES AN E-LE ARNING COURSE W O RK? STEPS FOR COMPLETING AN E-LEARNING COURSE 1. IMPORTANT: To better ensure student success in e-learning courses, students MUST enroll in and pass the DLES prep session (DLES100/101) prior to taking any e-learning or Hybrid designated courses. Please be sure to enroll so that you can complete the session prior to the start of your e-learning course. Students who fail to enroll or pass the course will be automatically withdrawn from any and all e-learning sections. This applies only to students who have never successfully completed an MCC e-learning course. Register Online (WebAdvisor) or in person at Registration, Counseling or Advising--N O T T H E E -LEARNING O F F I CE. 2. Each e-learning course has a "Start-up Session" either online in Blackboard or by faculty choice on campus. This session is your opportunity to meet with the instructor and find out what will be expected of you in the class. To identify which version your instructor has chosen go to and click on the Start-up Tab If you are unable to make the on campus Start-up Session, check with the instructor for the back-up version for the class. It may either be in the form of a video for viewing in the Library, or an on-line version. 6 4. e-learning courses start on the first day of the semester. Your course is available in Blackboard ( ). Pay special attention to your syllabus and any announcements that the instructor posts. Look over any dates and times posted in the syllabus and mark your calendar so that you don t miss reviews or tests. Be sure to set plenty of time aside routinely for your class work and assignments. USE THIS START-UP CHECKLIST: Attend or View the course Start-up Session Print out your class schedule Print out your Syllabus Textbooks Mott College ID Familiarize yourself with Blackboard by viewing the "esupport" on the main Blackboard page 5. esupport As e-learning students your hours and days of activity in class vary throughout the semester. We have created an esupport (esupport.mcc.edu) page to assist you during off business hours if you experience difficulties in your online class. We provide FAQs, tutorials and downloads that we hope you will find useful throughout the semester. Please familiarize yourself with this page HOW D O I RE GIS TER F OR AN E-LE ARNIN G COURSE? You register for e-learning courses the same way that you register for on-campus classes online using WebAdvisor or in person. All the same rules apply. You must be admitted, attend an MCC new student orientation, and take all applicable placement tests. All prerequisites for courses apply. You may also register at all Extension Centers. Remember: students MUST complete the DLES prep course successfully to enroll in any Mott e-learning or Hybrid classes. ARE E-LE ARNI NG CO URSE S EASI ER? Their advantages are convenience and flexibility, not simplicity. e-learners are typically working adults, often with both family commitments and jobs, who cannot easily attend campus classes delivered in the traditional face-to-face mode of instruction. e-learning courses cover the same material and require just as many hours of work as the same course taught in a classroom. Moreover, the courses require independent study skills such as good reading skills, selfdiscipline, good time management and motivation.

E-LEARNING STUDENTS ARE: Self-disciplined Highly-motivated Independent Willing to take on new challenges WILL I HAVE TO CO ME TO CAM P US? Probably. MCC s e-learning program is not "campus-free." How often depends on factors such as the delivery method of the specific course and your home equipment. REASONS FOR COMING TO CAMPUS THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER MAY INCLUDE: Register Purchase textbooks and other materials Attend e-learning Start-Up Session Take exams Use campus computers or other equipment WHY IS THIS E-LE ARN ING COURSE F ULL? Even though a course offered through e-learning doesn t use physical space in a classroom, there are limits to the number of students that the professor can teach. Your professor grades papers, homework and tests, and, also, answers your questions oneon-one. The personal attention takes more time than addressing questions in a classroom. AS AN O N LINE S TUDE N T, WILL I HAVE TO GO ONLINE AT CE RTAI N TIMES? The courses are located at the Blackboard Website Blackboard.mcc.edu and are "open" at all times. Your instructor posts information on Blackboard, including testing dates and assignment due dates. There may be threaded discussion, but you don t "meet" with your class online on a specific date or time, unless your instructor has indicated you do so. Some instructors require testing at the Testing Center check your syllabus. E-LEARNING INFORMATION ACADE MIC PRO BATION Please note that students on Academic Probation are not eligible to enroll in any e- Learning sections. ADDRESS / CH AN GE OF AD DRESS If you have moved recently, check your address on the college records and, if necessary change your address at the Registration Office located on the lower level of the Prahl Center. To do this, you must present a valid photo ID (driver s license, State of Michigan ID card, etc.).

The address form inside the start-up packet is for the e-learning office use only. Your correct address is very important as additional communications will be mailed to you during the semester. ASSIGNME N TS / H OME WO RK Refer to your syllabus--most instructors give very specific instructions for submitting assignments. The options for submitting your work are: ing to your instructor as an attachment. Check the syllabus to see if your instructor allows this and for specific requirements. FAXing to the e-learning Office at Be sure to use a cover sheet with the following information: your name, student ID number, home phone number (in case there s a problem), course, instructor s name, assignment number, and number of pages sent. Mailing to the e-learning Office. Please write your name, student ID number, and name of the course on each assignment, make a copy for yourself, write on the envelope in bold letters, "Contains e-learning Assignment," and mail to: Mott Community College e-learning Office, CM E. Court Street Flint, MI Turning in at the e-learning Office, CM2124. The e-learning staff is happy to receive your assignments unless the instructor has clearly indicated that another method of submission is required. All papers must be clearly marked with your name, course, instructor and assignment number. Your assignment will be date stamped as received and forwarded to your instructor. In the event that the office is locked, there is a drop slot for assignments. The e-learning Office will date stamp deposited material with the date prior to the lock up. Turning in at the Testing Center. Some instructors require that assignments be turned in at the Testing Center at the time you report to take your exams. Check your course outline/syllabus for your instructor s requirement. HIGHLIGH TS PAGE e-learning has incorporated a Highlights Page our website e-learning.mcc.edu This provides, information about your class(es), such as the review and test schedules, instructor notes, changes, Testing Center, Prepatory course and general information about e-learning information. ATTE ND ANCE The federal government requires the college to report absences. This includes e- Learning classes. There are several measurements of attendance in e-learning classes, including coming to the start-up meeting, turning in assignments, taking exams, participating in online discussions. Read your syllabus for your instructor s attendance policy. You may jeopardize your financial aid if you don t attend your e-learning class.

BLACK BOARD Blackboard is an Internet course content management system. Faculty may place their supplemental course materials at the website, and students access their on-line courses there. Personal Computers (PCs) come with Internet Explorer installed, and we recommend you use this browser to access Blackboard: blackboard.mcc.edu (note: no "WWW"). Macintosh computers have Safari Internet which also works with Blackboard. Blackboard is an Internet course content management system. It is very important to LOG OUT when you are finished. If you are registered in more than one class, you will only need to activate your Blackboard account once and all your courses will be available to you. To do your coursework, you do not have to "meet" online at specific times. The information is always available and updated by your instructor regularly. Exams taken on Blackboard, however, will only be available during the testing period established by your instructor. Some instructors require testing at the Testing Center--check your syllabus. CL ASS SCHED ULE You are required to present a current printed class schedule To check out instructional materials from the Library Reserves (Circulation Desk) To take any e-learning exams in the Testing Center If you need to use the Testing Center to finish the work for a course for which you have an "Incomplete," you will need to provide a transcript or other grade sheet showing the "I" grade. A copy of the Incomplete Contract between you and the Instructor is preferable. You can print your schedule from any computer with Internet access from MCC s main Web page, "WebAdvisor," then "My Schedule." Your schedule will allow use of open computer labs for the first two weeks of the semester (along with a photo ID) Your schedule will be given a temporary barcode by the Testing Center if you need to check out materials.

You should also refer to your schedule when signing up for your start-up session and when purchasing your textbooks. COM PUTE R LABS Mott Community College provides computer labs as a service to all its students and they are especially important to e-learning students. Computer labs are open on a walk-in basis. TUTO RI AL SERVI CES e-learning students are encouraged to use the Tutorial Services provided in the Learning Center, second floor, Prahl Center. They have tutors for Accounting, Math, computer courses, History and some English classes. Call (810) for information and to make tutoring appointments. WRI TIN G CEN TE R The Writing Center is a walk-in service for all MCC students who would like help with their writing. The staff is happy to help you at any point in the writing process from selecting or narrowing a topic to examining the final draft and every step that falls between. English faculty and student tutors are available. There are no costs, no grades, no appointments. You will be given friendly help on a first-come, first-served basis. There are several computers available to use in preparing your papers. There is also a Grammar Hot Line at the same number to answer brief grammatical questions by telephone. The Web site contains many useful handouts dealing with common writing problems as well as links to other sites that feature writing tips. CM 2031, (810) [email protected]
