7 track 1: The Technology Innovation Foundry 1 technology It is clear that the pace of technology innovation in the data center will be highly disruptive even revolutionary through this decade. The combination of virtualization, fabrics and cloud computing are creating a perfect storm of investment challenge for data center leaders. This track will explore the evolution of data center technologies, the ways that technology boundaries are becoming blurred, and the strategies for maintaining a balance between investment and legacy leverage. Hosted Virtual Desktops The Required Data Center and Infrastructure Investment Hosted virtual desktops may save many things, but money is not necessarily one of them! As HVDs are beginning to mature in deployment questions surrounding costs and savings remain unanswered. Are the initial anticipated savings been realized to their full extent? Or are costs that are being realized in the data center offsetting the savings? This presentation examines data center dependencies for HVD deployments and looks at how to measure the associated costs and data center investments for a successful HVD. What are the data center dependencies for HVD deployments? How can you measure the associated costs and data center investments for a successful HVD? Which best practices should be considered in the data center for HVD? Mark Margevicius, Gartner Does the Server Have a Role in the Fabric- Enabled Data Center? The server market has been evolving ever more radically since the dawn of server virtualization and the more recent infl uence of cloud computing. Now fabrics have emerged as yet another discontinuity. But the adoption rate of virtualization, cloud and fabrics will vary according to data center culture, workload demands and the need to amortize legacy investment. This presentation will spell out the market conditions and dynamics that are forcing change, and help data centers defi ne their blueprint for onward server deployment whatever that may be. What factors and dynamics are shaping the server market, now and in the future? How is the emergence of fabrics changing that evolution? Andrew Butler and Carl Claunch, Gartner The End of the Database as We Know It: No DISK, No SQL and Very Cloudy There is major disruption afoot in the database management system (DBMS) world again. We have the nosql movement, maturing open-source DBMS, true cloud models, and a technically possible shift to in-memory DBMSs the nodisk movement. Unlike past distractions (e.g., OODBMS, PICK and others), is there real value in the new models? Are we about to abandon the relational model? The future of DBMS is about to change. What is wrong with today s DBMSs? Are there fundamental changes in technology driving disruption? Is there business or technological value in a major DBMS shift? Don Feinberg, Gartner Fabric-Based Infrastructure: Transforming the Way Data Center is Bought, Managed and Evolved The concept of fabrics has emerged over the past two years as a means to converge separate storage, networking and server technology in the data center. User interest and demand is partly fueled by vendor enthusiasm and partly by the growing number of workload scenarios, such as cloud computing and virtualization, that support this new way of buying and implementing technology. But many factors infl uence what ideal approach organizations should take when planning to implement a fabric-based infrastructure (FBI) policy. This presentation charts the likely evolution of the market for fabric-based infrastructures, to help IT leaders determine the most appropriate vendor approach. What is fabric computing and its impact on DC transformation in the next fi ve years? How should IT organizations evaluate vendors promises of unifi cation and convergence? What steps should IT take to evaluate the benefi ts and risks of fabric architectures Andrew Butler, Gartner Storage Scenario Getting to Underwhelmed Storage has changed dramatically in the last few years. Previous rules and practices may no longer ensure optimum results as organizations seek improved levels of service, agility and availability of their data. In the next fi ve years business requirements will push IT to examine new storage capabilities, architectures and improved management techniques in order to address the ever increasing demands for storage. How and where do emerging architecture, virtualization and the cloud impact storage? Which storage vendors are best positioned for the data center of the future? What are the best practices for improving your storage strategy? Valdis Filks and Sheila Childs, Gartner Your Summit Your agenda! 8 track 2: Pursuing Operational Perfection 2 vendors, Achieving and maintaining IT Operational Excellence is mandatory to harness the power of technology innovation to provide services to the business. This excellence will be necessary to lower TCO, improve service quality and lower business risk. Sessions in this track will discuss how to exhibit Operational Excellence, how cloud computing and virtualization will impact IT Operations in a heterogeneous and complex IT environment; the benefi ts and challenges of process frameworks such as ITIL; trends and evolution of management technology and and the importance of running IT Operations like a business. Application Performance Monitoring: The Road Ahead A number of critical technology trends, most notably the availability of public cloud based infrastructure, platform and application services on the one hand and increasing complexity and obscurity of the edge of the internet on the other hand are beginning to shake foundations of Application Performance Monitoring (APM) processes and technologies. While Gartner believes that APM will survive the tremor, it will survive in a modifi ed form, the outlines of which we will sketch in this presentation. What is the optimal way of combining inside out and outside in monitoring architectures to establish a comprehensive picture of application behaviour? What is the right mix of analytic technologies for making sense of application performance data? What are organizational structures and process frameworks evolving to get the most out of the new generation of APM tools? Will Cappelli, Gartner A T IT DevOps and the Cloud Operating Model New approaches are happening as a result of cloud computing and are pushing cloud computing itself to new advances. The merging of development and operations (eg DevOps), BigData, Hybrid Cloud deployments, and Information as a Service are some prime examples. We explore how vendors, IT departments and other key players will need to deal with these potential dramatic changes to exploit opportunities and to avoid becoming irrelevant. What is causing the rise of DevOps and the cloud operating model? What are the key concepts surrounding DevOps and the cloud operating model? What will be the impact of DevOps and the cloud operating model on enterprise IT organizations? Cameron Haight, Gartner How to get Value From ITIL, COBIT and Other Best Practices This presentation builds on ITIL and service improvement and is relevant across all best practices sources. An introduction to process control theory, COBIT and explain how COBIT can benefi t ops vs. being a purely audit/info sec reference. What are the various best practices IT operations should be aware of? How can IT operations actually obtain value from them? What are some of the pitfalls to avoid? Ian Head, Gartner A T IT Having Your Cake and Eating It Too: How Desktop Virtualization Can Be Used to Lower Costs and Increase User Satisfaction Client computing combines two worlds that are increasingly in confl ict. On the one side, users are increasingly empowered by technology in their personal lives and expect IT to do the same for them at work. They want their opinions heard in the choice of devices they carry around and expect to perform personal and work tasks from the same device. On the other side, beleaguered IT organizations are working with static or shrinking budgets, and face growing concerns over security and compliance. For IT, it would be better if the world of personal computing stood still, so they achieve more standardization of confi gurations and better meet their objectives. But with the explosion of the use of mobile devices, many of which are personally owned, this is getting harder all the time. What does desktop virtualization technology do, and why should customers care? How will the use of virtualization technology in client computing evolve through 2014? What are the best practices for deploying and managing virtualization technologies in end-user devices? Mark Margevicius, Gartner T B IT Operations Management: Critical Factors in Your Future Success IT operations continues to undergo signifi cant changes to help the business grow and innovate. IT operations is required to be innovative and agile while also achieving higher levels of availability, meet compliance requirements and reduce per-unit service delivery costs. As the same time IT operations has been challenged to implement and manage new technologies, such as virtualization, composite applications, and cloud-based services, as well as investing in ITIL and process improvements. What IT operations management trends should organizations monitor through 2016? What immediate actions can be taken to improve ITOM investments and effi ciencies? How can the business value of IT operations be better communicated and improved? 9 track 3: Virtualization Goes Viral 3 deployment Virtualization in the shape of server virtualization might be an accepted practice throughout the data center; but the pace of demand for virtualization in other guises storage, network, client etc is gaining pace rapidly and still at a nascent stage. This track will address the ways in which virtualization can be taken to the next level in the entire IT environment servers, clients, storage, networks, databases and applications. Along with an assessment of vendors, products and strategies, we will examine best practices and critical factors for successful and real cost effectiveness. Virtualization and the Data Center Network The promise of cloud computing is ubiquitous access to a broad set of applications and services, which are delivered over the Internet and related networks, to multiple customers. To deliver on that promise, the cloud must provide a rich set of network services to a broad set of applications and services. Not all applications are the same: some will only require the basic capabilities available on the public Internet, while others may require an overlay on top (the augmented Internet ), or even a private, Internet Protocol network with applicationspecifi c capabilities. What may work for one subscriber of a cloud-based service may not be appropriate for another, so cloud computing providers need to understand network delivery issues and be prepared to deliver multiple cloud network options to their subscribers. This research explains the different types of cloud networks and identifi es application characteristics, which will drive the selection of a particular type of cloud network. Neil Rickard, Gartner Setting Your Virtual Ceiling Height Before IT Falls Down Virtualization is present in nearly 100% of IT shops, and seems done and dusted. It isn t. Today only 40% of server workloads are virtualized, we expect this to double over the next three to fi ve years. This is astonishing virtualization growth, but puts increased emphasis on thing that you can t or things that are diffi cult to virtualize. How do you determine what is your ceiling for virtualization today and how this will change? How do you prioritize the next workloads you should virtualize and which ones to keep on bare metal? What strategies are there to manage virtual server hosts and physical (bare metal) workloads? Philip Dawson, Gartner Virtualizing SAP and Oracle: ERP Optimization Virtualizing and optimizing platform selection for ERP deployments is not a new issue. However, if the systems vendor competes with the ERP vendor who competes with the DBMS vendor? One marketing move or acquisition can make a best fi t solution into a misfi t! This can create new silos and legacies in you portfolio that may take serious investment. How to select best of breed application and DBMS platforms? Deploying Oracle: caveats and best practices. Deploying SAP caveats and best practices Philip Dawson and Don Feinberg, Gartner Recovery-in-the-Cloud: The Hype and the Reality Recovery-in-the-Cloud services are being offered by an increasing number of providers and has the potential for both improving IT operations continuity as well as lowering the capital cost of a secondary recovery facility. However, are these benefi ts actually being realized? This session will discuss the current state of service adoption, early adopter experiences and related adoption pros and cons. What are the most salient technology, implementation and cost attributes of current RaaS service offerings? What has been the experience of early adopters of RaaS? How should IT assess the merits of RaaS adoption? John Morency, Gartner A T IT Bringing Cloud To Earth for I&O: Practical Advice and Implementations There is confusion in enterprise I&O as to opportunities and reality of cloud computing. Why wouldn t I&O want to increase effi ciencies, drive costs down and enable business agility? But how do they do that and where? We aim to bring cloud computing to earth by providing practical advice and case studies showing the value propositions of private cloud. What attributes of private cloud computing can be applied to the internal data center and what are the benefi ts? How have enterprises been implementing private cloud and real-time infrastructure architectures and what are the early best practices? Milind Govekar, Gartner F Gartner Analyst One-on-One Meetings Gartner Events give you more than what your normal industry event offers. Meeting face-to-face with a Gartner analyst is one of the key benefi ts of attending a Gartner Summit. 10 track 4: Evolving the Extra-Structure 4 facilities Data Center modernization doesn t start with what goes into the building it starts with the very premise of what design a modern generation data center should follow. With IT Infrastructure and Operations (I&O) consuming 60% or more of the total enterprise IT budget, the need to deploy effective information security, procurement, power and cooling, facilities, environmental (green IT) and governance have never been greater. This track will guide data center leaders to drive initiatives for cost optimization, sustainability, security, licensing, business continuity and planning. Getting the Deal you Want: The Art of Obtaining and Maintaining Buyer Control The path through a software evaluation is fraught with endless opportunities to stray off-course. This session shows you, fi rst, how to structure an evaluation to keep your real needs constantly in focus; and, then, how to recognize and circumvent vendors attempts to change your priorities and established evaluation criteria. How can you stay focused on your true needs throughout a software evaluation process? What are the ways you become vulnerable to the software vendor s playbook? What techniques can you use to garner and retain control? Stewart Buchanan, Gartner S B Looking Towards the Future: The Evolution of Shrinking Data Centers Through a combination of new technologies, effi cient design and the exploitation of cloud type services, next generation data centers could evolve into environments that are 40%- 60% smaller. What are the key trends in data center design? What can CIO s do to extend the life of existing data centers? How can external services be leveraged safely as part of data center planning? David Cappuccio, Gartner Road Stories: Lessons Learnt (and Fingers Burnt) in IT Risk Management Risk management is more art than science. The best way to learn risk management is to practice it. And the risk management approach must suit the culture of the organization. This presentation will share experiences, pitfalls and best practices encountered by Gartner analysts during their travels and daily interactions with clients. What are the challenges and realities inherent in fi nding the cost/control sweet spot? What are the risk management and assessment approaches and experiences amongst Gartner s clients? How to identify and avoid the common pitfalls? Tom Scholtz, Gartner A T IT Modernizing Recovery Into Resilience This presentation discusses the substance of disaster recovery modernization initiatives, along with its associated business, technology and operations drivers. What is disaster recovery modernization and why is it becoming an increasingly higher IT operations priority? Which technologies are improving the feasibility and effectiveness of disaster recovery modernization? How do I defi ne the business case for disaster recovery modernization? John Morency and Sheila Childs, Gartner A T IT Best Practices in Data Center Rationalization: How to Save Millions and Create a Federated Data Center Architecture The economy has put added pressure on many organizations to more effi ciently utilize the capacity they have in place, whether it is the physical data centers they have or the servers that reside within them. As such, even though many organizations have past experiences with consolidation projects, they are fi nding they are under increased pressure to optimize their costs and possibly further consolidate. The good news is that advances in technology have made second and third wave consolidation projects now viable. We will look at some key trigger points in deciding when to consolidate, best practices in how to get started and recommendations for each phase of a consolidation project, including best practices in relocation or closure of an existing data center. What best practices and processes should you follow when consolidating data centers? 11 track 5: Preparing for Cloud 5 to For many data centers, it is time to start designing their fi rst cloud. A large majority have already decided to build an internal or hybrid cloud using public alternatives and have selected a HIaaS (Hardware Infrastructure as a Service)platform rather than a PaaS or SaaS. However, many questions remain on the table. Building an internal cloud is a challenge that requires the effort and coordination of many departments. Mistakes occurring now could signifi cantly delay IT transformation. This Summit track addresses many of these questions; helping organizations focus on their priorities without getting overwhelmed by options or marketing hype. Gartner Internal HIaaS Cloud Reference Architecture and Maturity Model Many enterprises have started down the path to building a private cloud, but the road to private cloud is diffi cult to navigate. This technology deep dive will focus on the key building blocks required to transform the traditional data center into one capable of delivering infrastructure as a service (IaaS). In addition, the new Gartner ITP maturity model for building an internal cloud will be described, followed by an open discussion on the technical and operational nuances associated with IaaS delivery. What are the architectural components of an HIaaS cloud? How can an IT organization transform itself to build and operate an internal cloud? How can an IT organization measure its progress towards increased effi cacy through cloud solutions? Richard Jones, Gartner Technical Insights: The Internal Cloud Key Building Blocks: Self-service Provisioning, Capacity Management This session takes a close look at two key building blocks for every internal infrastructure as a service (IaaS) cloud: selfservice provisioning portals and capacity management tools. Portals and IT service catalogs are mandatory components to turn virtual infrastructures into internal clouds. The former empowers end users, while the latter allows the IT organization to standardize and control the offering. Capacity management is also critical to meet operational challenges. However, implementing provisioning portals and capacity management tools requires navigating a crowded and slowly maturing product landscape. IT organizations need to ponder available choices and develop new management strategies to succeed. How IT organizations can rethink their capacity allocation strategy, focusing on application performance awareness and deep integration with the management stack? What are the integration complexities behind the implementation of an orchestrator? What are the key attributes of such class of tools? Alessandro Perilli, Gartner A Zoning and Securing the Internal Cloud Internal clouds change the world of the data center. No longer is it easy to identify which application is running on which server. Furthermore, many security teams worry about server virtualization security, from zoning, to protecting moving workloads, to managing malware and confi guration of offl ine guests. Given the hypervisor s role in internal clouds, such issues are no small matter. Fortunately, both the virtualization platforms and third-party ecosystem for securing virtual servers have matured mightily. However, internal clouds raise new questions about virtualization security. How effective are network controls, and how they can be used within an internal cloud? What s the role of self service in the security of internal cloud? Is orchestration more than an operations tool? How does workload visibility change the way security must operate? Trent Henry, Gartner A T IT Bridging Internal and External Clouds Connecting internal and external clouds may seem a simple task, but issues abound. Vendor products, such as Citrix s OpenCloud Bridge and VMware s vcloud Connector promise to ease the integration of internal and external clouds. However, these technologies are in their infancy and customers should proceed with caution. Describe and defi ne the business drivers for hybrid cloud architecture and the various hybrid cloud connection technologies Illustrate how cloud interconnect solutions enables hybrid cloud computing Show the benefi ts and weaknesses that cloud connection technologies promise Offer guidance on how to best proceed with building hybrid clouds Kyle Hilgendorf, Gartner Building an Infrastructure and Cloud Cost Model IT decisions about how and where to host applications and how to set chargeback rates should be infl uenced by the cost of delivering the infrastructure. Unfortunately, many IT organizations are hamstrung by a lack of detailed knowledge about costs associated with data center infrastructure. In addition, public cloud pay-as-you-go pricing can paint a deceptive picture as these listed prices do not include the costs of resiliency, data protection, disaster recovery, and regulatory compliance. In this session, attendees will be walked through creating a cost model for IT infrastructure, and understanding the hidden costs of an external cloud solution in order to make informed decisions. How does an IT organization build a data center cost model for space, power, cooling, network, servers, and storage? What cost areas must be modeled to understand the costs of an internal data center? How does an IT organization model additional cost required to make a public cloud offering enterprise worthy? 12 Pre-Summit Tutorials, Roundtables and Workshops Tutorials Jump-start your Summit experience with our early morning tutorial sessions. Use these valuable briefings to deepen your understanding of the vital issues, emerging trends and opportunities which will be central to the Summit. How to Significantly Reduce IT Infrastructure and Operations Costs IT Infrastructure and Operations (I&O) is typically 60 percent or more of the total enterprise IT budget. Although CIO s and I&O leaders have made signifi cant progress to reduce costs here, intense budget pressures continue. Fortunately, Gartner has identifi ed ten key areas to focus efforts to further reduce cost structure. For most, full implementation of these ideas can reduce I&O costs about 10% over twelve months and 25% or more within three years. Jay Pultz, Gartner S B New Approaches to Enterprise Information Archiving in 2012 Storage and application management, e-discovery and compliance and preservation of historical data have never been more important than they are today. Enterprise information archiving underpins these functions as data ages, and helps IT establish a strategy that allows them to rapidly respond to audits and discovery requests while keeping data management infrastructure costs low. Archiving continues to evolve; nearly half of archives are being deployed in the cloud while on-premises archiving of other content types such as fi les or application data is becoming more vertically focused. Sheila Childs, Gartner A T IT Gartner Analyst/User Roundtables Join us for a hosted group discussion with your end-user peers, along with a Gartner analyst lending his or her expertise to assist you. But by learning from and following in the footsteps of those who have been successful, enterprises can simplify their efforts and increase the probability of successful HVD projects. Mark Margevicius and Philip Dawson, Gartner My Service Catalog is My Salvation Defi ning and managing a portfolio of IT services and presenting an actionable IT service catalog to business users is no longer an option, but rather a requirement for IT organizations. Best-in-class IT organizations are realigning staff resources and bringing in new tools to manage IT services throughout the service life cycle, offering capabilities for service requests, service fulfi llment, service-level reporting, service pricing and communicating the business value gained from the IT services. This workshop will examine best (and maybe some worst) practices in service catalog implementation. Ian Head and Milind Govekar, Gartner T IT Data Center DR Best Practices IT Disaster Recovery Modernization (IT-DRM) projects are delivering increased levels of operations recoverability and availability that go way beyond traditional disaster recovery. This workshop will examine effective and credible business cases that have been developed for these projects, including specifi c case study examples. Rakesh Kumar and John Morency, Gartner Building Internal Clouds: Tales from the Trenches Throughout history, isolated cultures have made identical technical advances. Today we re not inventing the wheel, but many IT organizations are building internal clouds that include low-level attributes and processes that mirror those of their peers. This workshop takes a deep look at lessons learned from 17 end user organizations that participated in Gartner s internal/private cloud contextual research project. While often acting independently, many organizations drew remarkably similar conclusions with regards to architecture, operations, and governance. 13 Maximize Your Summit Experience Augmenting Internal Clouds with Amazon Web Services Amazon Web Services (AWS) innovation, ease-of-use, and unique business model continues to defi ne cloud computing. Although AWS is an easy-to-use, general-purpose, cloud platform, IT organizations are asking how they can use AWS as a partner to their internal cloud and better meet business requirements. In this Gartner workshop attendees will participate in a facilitated discussion that examines AWS capabilities to be used in hybrid cloud architectures. Kyle Hilgendorf and Trent Henry, Gartner A Data Center Cost Optimization Through Use of x86 vs RISC Processing Devices The requirements for the IT DCs at Telco s are changing both from a regulative perspective as from the ongoing integration from IT and OT. The workshop will focus on the challenges, changes in requirements, and a possible roadmap to improve.
