2 An energy technology revolution is under way. International Energy Agency, 2010
With new energy to new levels of growth Welcome The energy industry is facing a fundamental transition. Conventional sources of energy are challenged by increasing supply risks and the threat of global climate change. At the same time, the dynamic pace of innovation in the renewable energy sector gives rise to new technological and regulatory risks. Incumbent energy firms are challenged by new entrants from other industries, and the emergence of new business models extends the boundaries of energy markets into areas as diverse as buildings, transportation, information technology and finance. Finally, decision makers in the new energy industry need to strike a balance between listening to their existing stakeholders and identifying new markets and customer preferences. New challenges require new competencies. The University of St. Gallen (HSG) has always been at the forefront of developing leaders who see beyond the turbulence of change and embrace new opportunities. In this spirit, it established in 2009 the Good Energies Chair for Management of Renewable Energies, the first of its kind at a leading Euro pean business school. In cooperation with the University s Executive School, the new Diploma of Advanced Studies programme in Renewable Energy Management (REM-HSG) has been launched to provide comprehensive training for future leaders in tomorrow s energy markets. World-class faculty from the University of St. Gallen, combined with thought leaders from academia, government and industry, will provide participants with the skills and knowledge they need to manage growth in the renewable energy industry. Participants The programme is especially designed for: Managers and entrepreneurs in the field of renewable energies Management in energy technology and engineering companies Energy portfolio managers in electric utilities, oil and gas companies Investors in the renewable energy market Business development managers in energyrelated industries (IT, automotive, buildings, retail etc.) Representatives of energy agencies or non-governmental organizations who would like to leverage their impact by gaining a deeper understanding of business perspectives on renewable energy Founders of new firms in the area of renewable energies In addition to getting equipped with the latest management and strategy tools and gaining insights into up-to-date research findings, participants will become part of a high-level network of future leaders in the emerging renewable energy industry, one of the most important growth markets of the future. We are excited about welcoming you as a participant in this exceptional programme! Yours sincerely, Prof. Dr. Rolf Wüstenhagen Professor Dr. Rolf Wüstenhagen, Director of the Institute for Economy and the En vironment at the University of St. Gallen 3

Programme committee The renewable energy sector provides a wealth of projects and business opportunities. Achieving competitive advantage in this new in dustry requires top managers who understand the specific challenges of renewable energy markets and who know how to successfully deal with them. Johann N. Schneider-Ammann, President, Swissmem (Association of The Swiss Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Industries) Outstanding business leaders support and advise the academic director of REM-HSG as members of the programme committee. The committee guarantees that the programme meets the highest practical requirements and covers all important topics which are decisive for success in the field of renewable energies. Successfully addressing the global energy and climate challenges is not just a matter of public policies, but requires a new generation of decisionmakers with a thorough understanding of the tremendous oppor tunities in the renewable energy market. With its new executive education programme, the University of St. Gallen as one of the leading European business schools offers bright people the essential tools to shape our energy future. Even today, an energy mix without renewable energies would be inconceivable. Nevertheless, we are far from utilizing their full potential. This requires not just excellent engineers, but forward-looking managers with the courage to chart new paths. Prof. Dr. Fritz Vahrenholt, CEO, RWE Innogy There is no doubt that protecting the blue planet is our most urgent task and an obligation for generations of today and of the future. Dirk U. Hindrichs, President and CEO, Schüco International KG To navigate the sea of change in the energy sector, there is a clear need for well-trained portfolio managers who know how to balance the technology and regulatory risk of individual energy options. Albert Filbert, CEO, HEAG Marcel Brenninkmeijer, Founder, Good Energies Inc. 7
You can expect practical, top quality course content University of St. Gallen Internationality, practical relevance and an integrative perspective have been the trademarks of education at the University of St.Gallen in Switzerland ever since it was established more than a century ago. Today, the University of St.Gallen (HSG) educates almost 6,000 students from 79 nations in the fields of Business Administration, Economics, Law and Social Sciences. The HSG has shown itself to be highly successful, having been consistently ranked among Europe s leading business universities (Financial Times Ranking 2008: 1st place in German speaking Europe). Its holistic education, which meets the highest academic standards, has earned it the seal of approval of the EQUIS and AACSB accreditations. Academic degrees can be obtained at the Bachelor s, Master s and Doctoral Levels, as well as in the university s first-class and comprehensive courses in Executive Education. HSG-Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) After successful participation in the programme (i.e. participation of at least 40 days in class and the acceptance of the diploma thesis), participants will receive the Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) in Renewable Energy Management (REM- HSG) of the University of St. Gallen. Modular structure The REM-HSG consists of 8 modules, each of which lasts one week. This means that the programme can be easily attended alongside your job. Development of a personal management challenge An important building block of the REM-HSG programme is the development of a personal management challenge for each participant in the field of renewable energies. The management challenge is not only the subject of the application procedure, but it can also be brought into the individual modules. For example, company specific situations, entrance into new markets, developing new strategies or marketing activities for renewable energies, etc. Teamwork Based on evaluation of the personal management challenge by the programme management, teams of three participants with different backgrounds will be compiled. The teams will work together throughout the programme. They will perform follow-up course work and the team members will help each other to develop the personal management challenge. The contact person for the single teams is the programme manager. Within Module 1 there will be a briefing for the teamwork and the members of the team will present their personal management challenges to each other. During the programme, the teams will have the opportunity to develop specific questions which can be brought into the programme and which should help them to solve their personal management challenges in the best possible way. Interactive learning experience Following the integrative approach, which is typical for University of St. Gallen, REM-HSG provides an inspiring learning experience. Parti cipants will take part in different learning formats, such as case studies, teamwork, group discussions or in-class presentations, etc. 8
Meet the Energy Entrepreneur During several modules, there will be meetings with energy entrepreneurs. In the context of an informal discussion, participants will have the possibility to network and to discover more about the opportunities and challenges which are involved in founding a renewable-energy start-up. ECTS-Credits The European Credit Transfer System defines how many ECTS- Credits can be earned with courses and how credits can be accumulated and transferred. Participants will get 24 ECTS credits upon successful graduation from the REM-HSG programme, including 6 credits for successful completion of the diploma thesis. Social programme There will be a social event within each module. The social programme will provide the participants with the opportunity to get to know each other better outside the classes and also help to foster a creative study atmosphere. REM-HSG Coaching on-the-job Each participant is entitled to two personal coaching sessions up to two years after successful graduation (maximum 3 hours). The coaching will be provided by the REM-HSG programme manager. 9
