The estate has a commercial function as well as providing extensive practical facilities and is the perfect location for its courses. 8 Learning environment Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Plumpton College offers the ideal setting and facilities to study landbased courses. Setting Established in 1926, Plumpton College is located at the foot of the South Downs National Park, in an 800-hectare estate with excellent facilities for our wide range of courses. The estate is one of the largest and most diverse operated by any landbased college. The commercial farm The farm carries 200 dairy cattle, 650 ewes, 130 sows, 35 beef cattle and a vast range of animals in the animal care unit. The college manages a further 50 hectares in Sussex. Animal care and veterinary nursing unit The unit houses a wide range of animals and a specific veterinary nursing teaching facility. Outdoor training resources The college estate and surrounding area offers excellent facilities and a wide range of activities such as kayaking, mountain biking, hill-walking and climbing. Winery and vineyards Our new state-of-the-art semi-commercial winery, produces award-winning wine, and has a bottling capacity for 50,000 bottles. There are three vineyards covering eight hectares growing over 10 different varieties of grape. Equine yards There are two well-equipped equine yards with two indoor riding schools, an outdoor ménage, a horse walker, a mechanical horse and a cross-country course, as well as extensive riding facilities on the college estate. 12 Agriculture Foundation degree UCAS code D400 (campus code P) Duration Full-time: 2 years Part-time: 4 years This broad-based course is designed to provide you with the practical, technical and managerial skills required to pursue a career within agriculture or allied land-based industries. Your learning environment includes Wales Farm, situated on the college s 800-hectare estate. Wales Farm has a range of enterprises including organic beef and lamb, conventional pigs, dairy, winter wheat, winter barley and organic spring barley, winter oilseed rape and maize. Course structure The course is delivered through a combination of lectures, fieldwork, laboratory-based practical sessions, group workshops and site visits. Areas of study You will develop a solid foundation of the fundamental knowledge needed to work in agriculture. Optional modules on this course also allow for a choice of specialisations including: converting to organic production; animal welfare; grassland and forage production as well as more business-oriented subjects such as business and financial management and agricultural business planning and development. Career and progression opportunities This course is vocational in nature. Graduates are well-equipped for a wide range of careers in agriculture such as dairy manager, agricultural sales executive or land agent. Module in focus Farm Animal Health and Welfare In this module you will examine welfare legislation in the UK for a range of farm animals and identify best practice in order to achieve these welfare standards. You will learn about the diseases of common farm animals, and learn to identify, understand, prevent and control the key problems. You will use real farm data to analyse problems and use this analysis to draw up a preventative health plan. You will assist with practical veterinary visits and look at the financial implications of disease. By the end of the module you will be able to: recognise the symptoms, and evaluate treatments of the main disorders of farm animals in the UK plan and operate an effective programme of preventative treatment for farm animals prepare a system to record the health of farm animals evaluate the welfare of livestock. You will have developed skills and knowledge in: the symptoms, treatments and prevention of disorders in a range of farm animals interpreting legislation and relating it to practice preparing a preventative health plan consulting with farm animal health professionals analysis and evaluation of farm survey and software data. 10

13 Animal Science Foundation degree UCAS code D300 (campus code P) Duration Full-time: 2 years Part-time: 4 years This course will equip you with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required for successful employment in animal management, the animal welfare sector, animal sciences or for progression to an undergraduate degree. Plumpton College s Animal Care Unit has developed substantially to include areas specialising in small mammals, aquatics, exotics, veterinary nursing and a dog grooming unit. Course structure The course is delivered through a mixture of lectures, fieldwork, laboratory-based practicals, group workshops, guest speakers and site visits. Students opting to take the Wildlife Conservation module have the opportunity to go on the college organised trip to South Africa. Areas of study You will explore subjects including anatomy and physiology, behaviour, ecology, nutrition and health. Students can also opt for choices, which include animals in education, wildlife management, immunology and applied animal health. The work placement of 4 5 weeks provides a valuable insight into the industry and possible contacts for future employment. Career and progression opportunities Career opportunities include animal welfare, zoological parks, education and animal advisory services. Graduates may also progress to a top-up degree course or to year 3 of an honours degree course. Module in focus Animal Husbandry This module will give you practical animal husbandry skills, and enables you to put your theoretical animal care knowledge into practice. You will be able to reflect on your progress within the module, setting goals and reviewing accomplishments. The hands-on skills learned here are needed for many forms of employment in the animal care and management industry, adding to your employability after graduation. 14 Arboriculture Foundation degree UCAS code D510 (campus code P) Duration Full-time: 2 years Part-time: 4 years This course offers you the opportunity to develop your understanding of current trends in arboriculture whilst building your knowledge of related safety, technical and business issues. The course content reflects the industry s recent move toward a more holistic approach to tree care and management. By the time you graduate you can expect to be equipped with a broad base of management and technical knowledge. Course structure The course is delivered via a mix of practical and theory sessions in the classroom and on site visits. Within the programme there are opportunities to achieve additional qualifications and industry-recognised certificates of competence in chainsaw use and tree climbing (additional fees may apply). Areas of study The syllabus reflects the wide range of knowledge required by the arboriculture industry, with a mixture of biologically focused tree management modules and industry-related modules. Optional modules allow you to specialise in areas of personal interest including science and forestry. Career and progression opportunities Graduates are well prepared for a career in arboriculture or related landbased industries at a technical or supervisory level. Career opportunities include arboriculture consultancy, local authority tree officer, tree surgery, estate management or arboriculture research. It is also possible for graduates to further their academic studies by progressing to the university s Ecology and Biogeography degree. Module in focus Arboricultural Planning Arboricultural Planning introduces you to the theories and practice involved with arboricultural planning and to tree care management systems. You will also carry out tree surveys and inspections and apply your findings to arboricultural works. This knowledge is key to the successful management of trees in the urban environment. 15 Countryside Management Foundation degree UCAS code D440 (campus code P) Duration Full-time: 2 years Part-time: 4 years Countryside Management provides broad work-focused training for those wishing to enter the industry whether as countryside rangers, biological surveyors or environmental educationalists. It is developed in consultation with a number of Sussex based countryside organisations to meet current and future employment needs. Plumpton College is the ideal place to study countryside management. The 800-hectare estate includes a commercial farm, ancient seminatural woodlands, chalk downland and a network of small streams. The estate is managed for multiple land uses and provides a first class learning resource for the course. Course structure The course consists of a balance of theory and practical with site visits and fieldwork forming an important part. The course may be studied on a full-time or part-time basis. Plumpton College maintains a strong network of contacts with the Sussex countryside management industry and weekly work experience is a compulsory part of the course. In addition, students have the option of being involved in New Leaf, the student-run conservation volunteer group. Areas of study First-year modules give students a broad background in the principles of countryside management, and include Ecology, Soil Science and Botany as well as associated practical expertise such as Field Biology Skills and Estate Skills. In the second year, compulsory applied modules such as Habitat Management build on the knowledge and skills acquired in year 1. Students also choose from a wide range of modules allowing in particular vocational areas or develop greater scientific knowledge, particularly in ecology. Career and progression opportunities Graduates are equipped for employment in a range of countryside jobs, for example wildlife rangers, nature reserve/ site managers, conservation officers, education officers, rights of way officers and environmental consultancy. Alternatively, they can progress on to related degree courses such as Ecology and Biogeography, Biological Science or Environmental Science. Module in focus Landscape Assessment Landscape assessment is a very important part of successful countryside management, and requires an understanding of the geological and historical processes behind the landscape around us. You will build up this understanding through a combination of lectures, off-site trips and fieldwork on the Plumpton estate. By the end of the module you will have: a clear overview of the geology of south-east England a thorough understanding of the historical trends and factors which have shaped land use in Sussex from prehistory to the present day a detailed knowledge of your study area, and how it has changed and developed over the centuries. You will develop skills and knowledge in: applying a landscape assessment checklist to a selected site conducting documentary research in assessing current and past land use conducting extensive fieldwork in assessing current and past land use making an assessment of the age and provenance of local landscape features such as ancient and recent woodlands, downland earthworks, field systems, lime kilns, hammer ponds writing a detailed landscape assessment report for a selected site. 16 Equine Sports Performance BSc(Hons) Amanda Bliss Equine Sports Performance BSc(Hons) After completing the foundation degree in Equine Studies at Plumpton College, I chose to top up with the Equine Sports Performance course. The standard of instruction was excellent and I was encouraged at every turn to pursue my interests within the degree. This allowed me to develop my skills as a researcher, and to gain contacts in the industry. In my final year, due to a placement gained through my coursework, I was able to present some of my work conducted during the placement at a European equine conference, and am continuing to pursue stud work and research in equine reproduction as a career UCAS code DC46 (campus code P) Duration Full-time: 3 years Part-time: 5 years On this course you will develop your skills in equitation, training and coaching whilst also building your knowledge of equine science and business management. By graduation you will have developed a critical understanding of the well-established principles of sport performance and the ways in which they relate to equitation. You will also be equipped with a range of skills in relation to the preparation of competition horses and riders. The large equine unit at Plumpton College has two well equipped yards, two indoor schools, an outdoor school, horse walker, and cross country course. Whilst studying for the degree you can choose to train for the British Horse Society (BHS) examinations. This is optional and not included in course fees. Students are expected to register independently with the BHS. Course structure The course has a broad base of modules delivered in a variety of ways including lectures, practical sessions on the college yard, equitation sessions and field trips. Areas of study Core subjects in years 1 and 2 include anatomy and physiology, equine nutrition, equine reproduction, research methods, equitation, equine biomechanics, exercise physiology, and sport psychology. There are also optional modules in subjects such as animal welfare, applied animal behaviour and microbiology. All students complete a major project on a subject of their choice and additional modules offered include evaluating equine performance, advanced nutrition and applied sport psychology. Career and progression opportunities Graduates are well-equipped for careers including yard management, competition grooming, stud management, instructing riding, equine nutritional science, mounted police, equine veterinary nursing and equine rehabilitation and therapy. Students with an Equine Studies foundation degree (or equivalent) may be able to join the course in years 2 or 3 depending on grades achieved. Module in focus Sports Psychology This module covers the main psychological theories involved in sports psychology. Personality, motivation and anxiety are examined and you will discuss their application to a sporting environment, emphasising equestrianism. This module is usually delivered through an intensive week of lectures followed by supported private study. You will develop a sound knowledge of sports psychology which is essential in the training of professional horses and riders. You will identify the psychological barriers to success, particularly in sport, and explore suggestions for overcoming these barriers based on current research. By the end of the module you will be able to: demonstrate an understanding of personality theories and their application within a sporting environment demonstrate an understanding of motivation and its practical application demonstrate an understanding of stress, arousal and anxiety and their effect on performance. You will develop skills and knowledge in: psychodynamic, trait, situational and interactional approaches to personality and their methods of measurement components of motivation, different views on motivation and suggestions for building motivation arousal and anxiety and how they are measured the major sources of stress and anxiety and their effect on performance.

17 Equine Sports Coaching Foundation diploma Application is direct to the college Duration Part-time: 2 years Developed in consultation with a number of Sussex-based equine establishments in order to meet their employment needs this course provides broad vocational training for those wishing to enter the equine industry as coaches/instructors, or for those already in the industry who wish to develop their qualifications. Plumpton College offers the ideal location to study equine sports coaching, with a range of resources including two indoor arenas, stabling for over 40 horses, a simulator horse and video analysis equipment. Course structure Foundation diplomas have been developed with working people in mind. The programme is offered on a part-time basis over two years, and is delivered over one to two days per week. Areas of study First-year modules give you a strong basis of theory and practical skills through a mix of academic modules such as anatomy and physiology, and the more practical modules including equitation. Second year modules include subjects such as biomechanical analysis and sport psychology. You will also undertake a project on a specialised area of your choice within equine sports coaching. Career and progression opportunities Plumpton equine graduates have achieved a high rate of success in finding courserelated employment in a range of jobs. Students from the foundation diploma can also apply for the Equine Studies foundation degree or the Equine Sports Performance honours degree. Module in focus Biomechanical Analysis This module is usually delivered though a combination of theory lectures and practicals; and benefits from regular input by guest experts in the field. You will benefit from the use of state-of-the-art motion analysis equipment that has been specifically engineered to analyse the kinematics of the equine gait. The main aim of this module is to introduce you to the principles of biomechanics with particular reference to the equine and to identify the different stages of locomotion. By the end of the module you will be able to: recognise common terms related to locomotion and biomechanical functions of the horse demonstrate an understanding of biomechanical principles understand the structure and function of locomotory structures and tissues. You will develop skills and knowledge in: planes of reference of the quadrupedal body the definition and use of anatomical descriptors analysing the stages of gait, movement and investigating the forces involved explaining static and dynamic conformation anatomical adaptations of the horse. Carol Taylor Equine Sports Coaching Foundation diploma Equine Sports Coaching is totally unrelated to my career as a surveyor, but I have my own horses and learning about their care and what makes them tick was really appealing. I first felt enrolling on this course was completely self indulgent as I was only doing it because I wanted to, however, it has been unbelievably rewarding for me and hopefully for my horses too. I ve been really surprised at other rewards doing the course has brought, like new friendships and a rekindled enthusiasm to learn and participate in all things new. 18 Equine Studies Foundation degree Brenda Smith Lecturer in the Equine Studies I have worked at Plumpton College for twelve years and teach on the foundation degree course in Equine Studies and the degree course in Equine Sports Performance. My specialist subject is biomechanics, which is the study of how a horse moves and why it moves in certain ways. Alongside this I also teach stable management and equine practical management. Modules in practical riding are very popular with our students and we now have a simulator mechanical horse at Plumpton for students to improve their position, balance and confidence. I also teach dressage and jumping. Students also have the opportunity to gain the British Horse Society (BHS) Assistant Instructor (AI) qualifications alongside their academic studies. This practical qualification is invaluable, and students could use this if they wish to work as a leader on American summer camps. UCAS code D422 (campus code P) Duration Full-time: 2 years Part-time: 4 years This course is one of only a small number available in the UK that offers you both a foundation in equine science and a grounding in the practical skills required by the industry. You will develop your understanding of the breeding, training and care of horses whilst building practical skills in stable management and equitation. Our large equine unit has two well-equipped yards, two indoor schools, an outdoor school, a horse walker, and a cross-country course. Professional accreditation Whilst studying for the degree you can choose to train for the British Horse Society (BHS) examinations. This is optional and not included in course fees. Students are expected to register independently with the BHS. Course structure Modules are delivered in a variety of ways including lectures, practical sessions on the college yard, equitation sessions and field trips. Opportunities are also available for you to undertake work experience abroad. Areas of study We offer a wide range of modules which bring together academic and practical aspects of the subject, including biomechanical analysis, equine health and disease, equine management and coaching skills. Business management and career development modules provide a fully rounded course. Career and progression opportunities The course prepares students for careers including yard management, breeding and stud farm management, competition grooming, instructing riding, equine sports coaching, equine rehabilitation and therapy, equine events organisation and management. Foundation degree holders can continue their studies for a further one or two years, depending on grades achieved, on the Equine Sports Performance honours degree. Module in focus Equine Practical Management Skills This module is mostly taught on the equine yard, with some theory sessions to support practical knowledge. You will be equipped with the knowledge and practical expertise required to look after equines to a high standard and to manage an equine yard environment. By the end of the module you will be able to: demonstrate how to handle horses effectively in a range of situations demonstrate care of the competition horse demonstrate how to fit basic tack and associated equine equipment demonstrate an understanding of basic feeding and fattening principles demonstrate safe travelling preparations recognise signs of good health and condition in the horse identify suitable housing and facilities for equines. You will develop skills and knowledge in: recognising dangerous situations and the potential for injury to horse and/ or handler, and fire and evacuation procedures different types of, and the correct fitting of, tack and equipment rules of feeding and watering and common feedstuffs development of basic fittening plans different methods of transporting the equine, travelling equipment and preparations for journeys signs of good and poor health shoeing procedures cause and remedy of stereotypical behaviour in the domesticated horse different housing systems, modifications and improvements, fixtures and fittings. 16

19 Forestry and Woodland Management Foundation degree UCAS code D500 (campus code P) Duration Full-time: 2 years Part-time: 4 years The Forestry foundation degree course meets the training needs of the forestry industry in aspects of woodland management and multiple-use forestry. Particular emphasis is placed on the environmental and ecological factors which influence forestry in the south of England. You will develop a combination of practical skills and scientific knowledge required for a career in forestry and other related land-based subjects, enabling you to contribute to the management of woodland and other natural habitats. Course structure The course is delivered via a mix of scientific theory and practical sessions in the classroom and on-site visits. You will also benefit from a 30-day work placement. Within the programme there are opportunities to achieve additional qualifications and industry-recognised certificates of competence in chainsaw use (additional fees may apply). Areas of study A wide range of forestry and woodland management topics are covered, including silviculture, ecology and the application of ecological theory, and multiple use forestry. Career and progression opportunities Graduates are prepared for a career in forestry or related land-based industries such as forestry consultancy, woodland and estate management, woodland officers, private consultancy, conservation work or forestry and woodland research. Graduates can also apply to study the university s Ecology and Biogeography degree. Module in focus Tree Pests and Diseases Tree Pests and Diseases introduces you to a range of pests and diseases commonly effecting trees in the UK. You will learn identification of a wide range of fungi, insect and mammal species, how they spread, their effects on trees and possible ways in which they may be controlled. By the end of the module you will be able to: demonstrate a knowledge of important pests and diseases of trees in both woodland and amenity situations describe the biology of a range of tree pests and diseases and the impacts on the host trees describe and evaluate potential control measures for a range of tree pests and diseases apply the knowledge of tree pests and diseases to management activities and plans. You will develop skills and knowledge in: identifying common pest and diseases affecting trees in the UK pest management plans interactions between fungi and trees. Bill Daniel Forestry and Woodland Management Foundation degree There is a good balance of lectures and field trips, as well as some interesting talks from people from different parts of the industry. The emphasis on ecology and sustainability is particularly interesting and I m looking forward to applying my knowledge when I go back to full-time work. 20 Garden Design Foundation degree Harriet Cherriman Garden Design Foundation degree It s been brilliant to learn in such a beautiful setting and to have the opportunity to work with practicing garden designers, some of who are known internationally. UCAS code K300 (campus code P) Duration Full-time: 2 years Part-time: 4 years This course enables you to develop in a range of new and established techniques in garden design. You will have the opportunity to develop the horticultural knowledge, design ability and business skills required to become a professional garden designer. Course structure Studio-based activities are a significant feature of this course where staff and students can share experiences in the process of learning individually and as a group. Project work, group critiques and individual tutorials promote reflective learning and the development of generic skills. Practising garden designers contribute to the course as visiting tutors. Areas of study There is a balance between theoretical and practical subjects offered, from plant knowledge and use, history of garden design and drawing skills, to more general modules which include business management and career development. Career and progression opportunities Graduates are well-equipped for a career in garden design. They may also progress to further study at a higher academic level. Module in focus History of Garden Design This module is taught by an experienced professional garden designer and expert on garden design history. Emphasis is on the nineteenth century and onwards. This module provides an overview of great people, movements and ideas that have shaped the design of both large-scale parkland and the domestic garden. The influence of the industrial age, art deco, arts and craft, and modernism will be explored. This module brings garden design history right up to date by looking at the impact of current environmental and green issues. 21 Garden Design Foundation diploma Application is direct to the college Duration Part-time: 2 years Developed in consultation with employers in order to meet industry needs in Sussex this course offers horticultural knowledge, design ability and business skills enabling you to become a professional garden designer. Plumpton College is the ideal place to study garden design with our recent achievements at events such as the Hampton Court Flower Show. Course structure Foundation diplomas have been developed with working people in mind. The programme is offered on a part-time basis over two years, and is delivered over one to two days per week. This course also offers studio-based activities, a significant feature providing individual and group tuition where staff and students can share experiences. The compulsory work placement allows you to experience the work place and to develop contacts for the future. Practicing garden designers contribute to the course as visiting tutors and share their expertise in a range of new and established garden design techniques. Areas of study First-year modules give students knowledge and vocational skills through a mix of academic and practical modules which include garden plant identification, plant establishment and maintenance, site surveying and construction drawing, and garden design and the arts. Career and progression opportunities Successful completion of the course enables graduates to enter the horticultural industry some as practising garden designers, others are employed in established studios while some find other niches within a more general area of horticulture. Module in focus Garden Plant Identification This module will help you get to grips with anatomy and detail of garden plants. The course tutor is a professional horticulturist and plant tissue scientist. You will explore the fascinating life stories and curious adaptations of garden plants while increasing your ability to recognise and name a large number of plants. You will also examine botanical Latin and the classification system. This is an essential module for anyone interested in garden plants. By the end of the module you will be able to: discuss the role of plant taxonomy and the importance of being able to classify plants accurately recognise a range of characteristic plant components which aid identification identify an extensive range of plants by their botanic names and variety/cultivar describe the selection of plants, hybridisation, and their provenance. 22 Outdoor Adventurous Activities Foundation degree Jessica Elphick Outdoor Adventurous Activities Foundation degree I love my course! I m one of the youngest at 19 but it s great being with a group of people who all have similar interests and the desire to get outdoors. We cover a lot of theory-based work which is vital for heading into the outdoor adventure industry. The course gives us the opportunity to participate in adventurous activities such as mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking, sailing, mountaineering and canoeing. UCAS code N891 (campus code P) Duration Full-time: 2 years Part-time: 4 years This foundation degree will equip you with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required for successful employment in the outdoor adventurous activities sector. The outdoor education facilities at Plumpton have been developed to include an indoor climbing wall. We also have kayaks and a fleet of mountain bikes which are used primarily at offsite facilities. Whilst on the course you will have the opportunity to study for National Governing Body (NGB) outdoor educationrelated qualifications, and to undertake a work placement which provides a valuable insight into the industry and enables you to make possible contacts for future employment. Professional accreditation Students are encouraged to study for industry qualifications with the Mountain Leader Training Board, the Royal Yachting Association and the British Canoe Union. Course structure The course is delivered through practical and theory lectures, expeditions and day trips. There are also opportunities for expeditions to areas including North Wales, Scotland, the Peak District and overseas locations. Areas of study Areas of study include practical activities, philosophies, environmental education, social and cultural aspects of outdoor activities as well as areas such as business management. These may include outdoor education centres, specialist centres that cater for students with challenging behaviour, the wider national and international expedition industry, adventure travel services and freelance instructional work. Module in focus Practical Outdoor Adventurous Activities This module will develop your skills in land and water-based outdoor activities and develop your knowledge and understanding of their applications to different user groups. You will participate in land and water-based activities and record your experience in a log book. You will undertake a site report on a location in the south-east of England in order to understand the impact that the choice of location has on the activities we undertake. By the end of the module you will be able to: assess a range of outdoor activities for their suitability to meet the needs of a range of participants demonstrate knowledge of outdoor activities available in the UK demonstrate understanding of the importance of the choice of location for practical outdoor adventurous activities self-evaluate practical skills in a range of land and water-based activities. You will develop skills and knowledge in: the key issues surrounding land and water-based outdoor activities and their applications to different user groups how outdoor activities meet the needs of various participants practical land and water-based activities understanding the impacts of weather and choice of location on the activities to be undertaken. 20

23 Veterinary Nursing Foundation degree UCAS code D310 (campus code P) Duration Full-time: 3 years Part-time: 5 years This three-year course is recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. The second year is spent in practice, with the exception of a one-week module at the college. The course is suitable for unqualified veterinary nurses, student nurses who would like to train whilst in part-time employment in a veterinary practice and students seeking to enter the field who will be provided with non-paid placements. The college resources include, an animal care unit and a veterinary practice suite containing diagnostic, anaesthetic, laboratory and surgical equipment. Professional accreditation Students who successfully complete the course receive professional accreditation from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) and will be able to register as veterinary nurses. Course structure Modules are delivered through lectures, laboratory-based practical, group workshops, practical sessions and workrelated activities. Students complete a nursing progress log as part of their overall qualification. Students are required to have a placement in a veterinary practice for the duration of the course. Areas of study Year 1 includes anatomy and physiology modules which develop your understanding of animal structure and function. Small animal nursing provides theory and training in theatre practice, sterilisation, patient care and intra and post-operative care, while animal reproduction covers theoretical reproduction of small animals. During the first year, you will spend two days a week in practice. In the second year, a nursing module will prepare you for your placement year. The placement year allows you to accumulate hours towards the 2,450 work placement hours required by the RCVS. In the third year, you will gain a greater understanding of a variety of veterinary disciplines and continue with consolidating theory with practical elements. You will spend two days a week in practice. Students are required to sit RCVS examinations at the end of their first and third year. Career and progression opportunities This course is designed to develop the professional role of the veterinary nurse within practice. Options open to graduates include a range of specialist roles in veterinary nursing and further study. Module in focus Veterinary Reproduction Detailed knowledge of reproductive physiology is essential in order to identify and assess appropriate husbandry of breeding animals. By the end of the module you will be able to: identify the structures and functions of mammalian male and female reproductive systems identify the process of fertilisation, embryo development, parturition and lactation identify the factors associated with potential breeding stock identify the factors associated with management before, during and after pregnancy of a number of species assess the methods of reproductive techniques used in breeding. You will develop skills and knowledge in: the key characteristics of female and male mammalian reproductive systems assessing appropriate breeding stock researching and evaluating appropriate management for different breeding livestock researching and evaluating modern reproductive technology and relevant ethical issues. Entry requirements GCSE (minimum grade C) At least 5 subjects including mathematics, English language and a science. UCAS tariff 120 points, from an A-level, Advanced GNVQ or BTEC National Diploma in a relevant subject, ie biology. Level 3 Key Skills will count towards the tariff score. Excluding General Studies. International Baccalaureate 24 points, certificates considered. QAA-approved access course acceptable. Students who have the appropriate GCSEs but not 120 UCAS points may be eligible for entry. This will be assessed at interview, using portfolio evidence and employer references. In addition to the academic entry criteria, students are required to have completed a minimum of two weeks work experience in a veterinary practice working as a veterinary nurse. Students should also be aware that any conviction, including drugs offences must be disclosed and the student may not be accepted onto the course as the RCVS requires newly qualified nurses to disclose this information when registering. 21

24 Viticulture and Oenology BSc(Hons) UCAS code D636 (campus code P) Duration Full-time: 3 years Part-time: 5 years This is the only undergraduate degree in wine production delivered in English in Europe. Plumpton College is the Centre of Excellence for training, education and research in wine in the UK. Course structure The course is normally studied over three academic years, but can be completed in a part-time mode. Total timetabled sessions are from hours a week. Students actively participate in the maintenance of Plumpton Estate vineyards and in the production of its award-winning wine. Areas of study The course covers all aspects of wine production and related biological sciences, including practical vinegrowing and winemaking, advanced viticulture and oenology, wine sensory evaluation and wine analysis. The course includes vintage experience and a major research project. Career and progression opportunities Graduates from this and related courses have become vineyard managers, winemakers, wine buyers, cellar managers, wine educators, project scientists and oenologists and have also progressed to further study at PhD level in wine abroad. They are very active in the burgeoning English wine industry and are also employed in other wine-producing countries including France, Germany, Portugal, Greece, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Module in focus Winery Engineering and Practical Skills This module teaches the practical skills required for the transformation of grapes into wine, starting with the processing of the fruit, through fermentation and finally onto blending and bottling. It enables you to participate in all aspects of the production of Plumpton s award-winning wines using Plumpton College vineyard grapes in the well-equipped college winery. You will also develop a theoretical understanding that will enable you to play a key role in the purchase of winery equipment and in winery design. By the end of the module you will be able to: undertake key winemaking operations that optimise wine quality effectively monitor and record the development of a particular wine relate winemaking theory to practical situations in a commercial winery evaluate important elements of winery design. You will develop skills and knowledge in: grape, juice and wine handling in a commercial winery situation operation of winery machinery including de-stemmers, crushers, presses, pumps, filters and bottling equipment safe and accurate laboratory analysis needed to monitor winemaking processes making appropriate addition to juice and wine as required keeping records for legal and quality assurance purposes. 22

25 Wine Business Foundation degree UCAS code D690 (campus code P) Duration Full-time: 2 years Part-time: 4 years This course is designed specifically for students who want to work in the wine trade or who want to start their own wine-related business. It combines a practical and theoretical understanding of wine and the wine industry and includes work experience and visits to European vineyards. Course structure The course provides a strong academic framework for business management in the wine industry. It covers wines and spirits of the world, basic vine growing and winemaking, wine tasting and food and wine matching. Business modules cover marketing, finance, IT and people management as well as an overview of the wine trade. You can study a choice of European languages. This broad study will enable you to plan your career path within the wine trade with confidence. Areas of study The course focuses on marketing, the wine trade and business planning and development, plus modules that correspond to the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Advanced Certificate and Diploma syllabus. This allows you to gain the WSET Diploma as an additional qualification during your two years at Plumpton College (the cost of exam entry is additional to fees). The proximity of London, one of the world s key marketplaces for wine, provides a good opportunity for keeping up-to-date with new developments in the wine trade. Module in focus The Wine Trade This module analyses the UK wine trade but also examines the global trade in drinks, especially wine. Students will build from a practical base of the principles of commercial on and off trade wine selling, through case studies of UK wine traders, to multinational and global corporations. Students will trace the progress of a bottle of wine from vineyard to consumer along a number of different possible paths, taking in purchasing and shipping options along the way, as well as current tax and legislative frameworks. Students will also examine the different roles within the wine trade and stay abreast of contemporary developments in the UK wine trade in real time as they happen.
