Who is it for and how long will it take? 1:1 or a group, working in pairs or small teams. Takes minutes. What is needed? Savvy Storage Quiz for each person Savvy Storage: Do s & Don ts and Reminders Sheet Pens or pencils Savvy Storage Answers for yourself A to Z of Food Tips RUNNING THE SESSION Before you begin Introduce the topic: Food lasts longer and tastes better when it is stored properly. Also, you will end up throwing less away, saving money. This activity is all about what is best kept where and how. Do you have everything you need? Check you have the Savvy Storage Answers handy. How to run the activity 1. Give the person or each pair/team a copy of the quiz sheet. Allow 10 minutes for completing the quiz. If you like, you can read out the questions. 2. When everyone has completed the quiz, go through each question. Try to get the person or pairs/teams to give their answers. Use the Savvy Storage Answers to check. 3. Give out the Savvy Storage: Do s & Don ts and Reminders Sheet to take home. After the activity 4. Ask everyone for a savvy storage action they are going to use from now on. 5. No freezer? Ask people for tips about other ways to store or use up food. 6. Ask people if they can guess how much they could save by storing food better?
2 O O O Activity 8 - Savvy Storage What have we found out? By being savvy about storage we can keep food fresh, tasty and safe to eat. The right temperature to keep your fridge at. That wasting less food, by being savvy about storage, saves money. What else could we do? Do the quiz again with prizes such as storage boxes or bag clips. If you need a tie-breaker question, use: Q: Why should we wrap food well before storing it in the fridge? A: To stop it from drying out/going hard. Next time the group meets, check if we are still savvy about storage. Try out some different storage ideas, such as buying frozen or dried foods instead of fresh. BANANAS APPLES ONIONS CARROTS PINEAPPLES POTATOES 6. So then, where is the best place to keep the foods that don t go in the fridge? Give your answers: Section 3: Freezer foods 7. Which food is NOT OK to freeze? (Circle your answer) CHEESE MILK BREAD LETTUCE BANANAS Section 4: Your fantastic fridge 8. What is the best temperature to keep your fridge at? (Tick your answer) Below 5 degrees Above 5 degrees Below zero 9. Your fridge is actually a dry place. What can you to do protect your food from drying out? Give your answer:
4 Activity 2 - Lovely Meals with Leftovers Savvy Storage Answers Section 1: Storing leftovers 1. For how many days should you store leftovers in the fridge? 2 Days 2. How should you safely store cooked rice, and for how long? Cool quickly, (rinse with cold water) ideally within 1 hour. Once cold, cover and keep it in the fridge for no longer than 1 day before re-heating. 3. What if you had 1/2 a tin of food- How should you store this safely? Put into airtight container or covered bowl. Section 2: Storing fruit and vegetables 4. Most fruit and vegetables will stay fresher for longer if kept in the fridge in the bag they came in. TRUE - the packaging food comes in has been cleverly designed to keep it fresher for longer. Remember to follow the on-pack instructions. Tip: you can re-use an old bread bag to store fruit and vegetables that you bought loose, in the fridge. 5. Which foods should NOT be kept in the fridge? BANANAS ONIONS PINEAPPLES POTATOES 6. So then, where is the best place to keep foods that don t go in the fridge? BANANAS Separately from other fruits, as they cause them to ripen. ONIONS In a cool, dark place. Away from other foods, which might take on the strong smell. PINEAPPLES - Just keep them somewhere nice and cool. POTATOES In a cool, dark place - to stop them from going green. If you get any green, cut it out before use. Then find a better place to store your spuds. Section 3: Freezer foods 7. Which foods are NOT OK to freeze? LETTUCE How to freeze other foods: Cheese - grate before freezing. Milk - drink or use a small amount before freezing. Shake well after defrosting. Bread - gently bang a sliced loaf before freezing, so that slices freeze seperately. Bananas - peel, for ease when using later, before freezing. Section 4: Your fantastic fridge 8. What is the best temperature to keep your fridge at? Below 5 degrees 9. Your fridge is actually a dry place. What can you to do protect your food from drying out? Use cling film, foil or a bowl over food on a plate. Re-use plastic takeaway containers, storage tubs or food packaging, such as an old bread bag.
