2 OUTSHINE PROGRAMS: Students will be engaged in learning about two dynamic programs: Integrative Thinking and Maximum City. They will have an opportunity to combine the learnings from these two programs in tackling a complex real world challenge. Students will use integrative thinking and expert knowledge in urban economic and social development to collaboratively solve an authentic business problem. This work will culminate in pitches to a live client. Integrative Thinking Integrative Thinking is an approach to creative problem solving developed at the Rotman School of Management. At its core, it is about making better choices when facing challenges that have no one right answer. Integrative Thinkers seek to build new ideas by rethinking and combining apparently divergent choices without having to make costly trade-offs. They dig into and leverage the tension between conflicting ideas to generate new ways of doing things. Integrative Thinking is about helping students engage with an ambiguous and changing world and wade through complex problems with creativity, rigour and optimism. Students in this program will apply integrative tools to a real-world problem in order to build new solutions for a Toronto-based urban challenge. Maximum City Maximum City believes that young people can be key contributors to the understanding and shaping of our urbanizing world. They have their eyes on the future, are creative risk takers, have fresh ideas, and are eager to join the conversation. Through the Maximum City program, students gain a specialized understanding of how things are built, planned, and governed in our city from a team of leading experts and teachers. They work side-by-side with these experts and contribute their own perspectives and ideas through hands-on lessons, authentic learning, modelling, charrettes, and field visits. The goal of the program is to formalize urban studies curricula at the high school level. outshine 2014 page 2

In 2012, UTS had more AP National Scholars than any other school in Ontario Ellie Avishai is the founder and director of I-Think, a unique initiative at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto which adapts the pioneering Integrative Thinking curriculum to the world of elementary and secondary education. Ellie has taught in public schools and in education-focused NGOs. Other experience includes a decade in the notfor-profit sector, project management, public relations and recruitment. She was also a a strategy consultant with the NeXus consulting group, which applies social enterprise models to non-profit organizations. Ellie teaches in the Rotman School of Management s Executive Education and Commerce programs. She was a 2005 recipient of the Bealight Fellowship for Social Entrepreneurs. Christopher Federico has taught at both the secondary and postsecondary levels in the disciplines of history, geography, politics, and economics. He is currently Coordinator of the Department of Canadian and World Studies at UTS, seconded to the I-Think Initiative at the University of Toronto s Rotman School of Management. Christopher is particularly interested in exploring the processes used by individuals and groups to model and resolve complex problems, especially in matters of public policy, and peace and conflict. In 2006, he served with the United Nations in the disputed Abyei region of Sudan. Josh Fullan is the founder of Maximum City and a teacher working at the intersection of sustainable urbanism and education. He has over 10 years teaching experience at a variety of levels and a strong track record of impactful civic engagement, community consultation and leadership in the Greater Toronto Area. His social enterprise, Maximum City, has been recognized locally and internationally as a model for bringing civic literacy, urbanism, and sustainability education to youth. Josh has written and presented widely on community, urban planning, civic engagement, and education topics in the media and academic contexts. outshine 2014 page 3

4 Stay at the University of Toronto s University College Students will stay in residence at Sir Daniel Wilson Residence at University College, on the University of Toronto s St. George campus. Close to all outshine program venues and with easy access to public transport and city attractions. ROOMS: Each single room is well-appointed with a bed (and bed linens), desk and chair, closet, ceiling fan, and ethernet and wireless internet access. MEALS: Students will receive breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day. (Specific dietary needs can be accommodated.) AMENITIES: Students will have access to 2 common rooms 2 kitchenettes Coin-operated laundry facilities 2 music rooms with pianos Games room in nearby Whitney Hall, with billiards and ping-pong tables Ethernet and wireless internet access outshine 2014 page 4

5 Toronto Islands Beyond the classroom Beyond the classroom and the lab, students will participate in after-class, evening and weekend programming that is engaging, interactive and fun. They will have time to socialize, discover the city of Toronto, and participate in interesting, educational and entertaining field trips and activies. Each week, students will enjoy two or three evening excursions in the city and one weekend day-trip, in addition to programmed activities on-campus or in residence. What s in a week? Days begin at 7:00am with wake-up followed by breakfast in the dining hall. From Monday to Friday, students participate in their chosen program from at 9:00am until noon at various locations around the university campus. After lunch, afternoon classes run from 1:00pm until 4:00pm. Students then return to the residence to relax for an hour before dinner at 5:00pm. Each evening there will be an organized activity, such as a trip to the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), one-on-one meetings with admissions officials from the university, shopping, or going to see a professional baseball game. On the weekend, students will tour Niagara Falls and local attractions. Toronto skyline Teacher-supervisors To ensure a high-quality experience for residential students, a core group of three supervisors will reside on campus with the students and act as traditional Resident Advisors. They will lead evening and weekend programs as well as provide supervision for all excursions. These supervisors have strong leadership skills and extensive experience working with young people with different interests. outshine 2014 page 5

6 Art Gallery of Ontario Who should apply? We are seeking outstanding students with strong academic records, a passion for learning and a desire to expand their thinking. The UTS summer program is open to intellectually curious students from grades 9-11 (ages 14-17) who are looking for a unique global learning opportunity. This is a distinctive program which is designed for individuals who have strong written and verbal communication skills, draw well-reasoned conclusions, enjoy problem-solving, and consistently adhere to a high standard of personal and professional conduct. Level of English required International students are encouraged to apply to this program. While applicants are not required to submit any test results indicating their language proficiency, students need to have a strong grasp of both speaking and writing in English. These are rigorous programs aimed at outstanding high school students. If English is not the native language, students should be able to easily read a long article from a magazine such as The Economist and be able to discuss it with native English speakers. In addition, students need to be capable of writing a response about the article so that thoughts are clear, even if the grammar and spelling still have mistakes. 7 FAQs Will participating in this program help me get into the University of Toronto? You will have an opportunity to meet with an admissions officer both individually and in groups to discuss university programs and the application process. Where are classes held? Classes will generally be held on the main university campus primarily at Rotman and UTS. Is there a dress code? There is no dress code for the program. We recommend that students wear comfortable weather-appropriate clothing. Students might also want to bring outfits appropriate for the evening and weekend activities such as a bathing suit, a business casual outfit and some comfortable shoes. May I still be in the program if I am 17, but still in grade 11? Yes, students may participate in the program as long as they have not yet completed grade 12. When will I be notified of an admissions decision? You will be notified within two weeks of applying. Do students have access to campus facilities? Students will have access to University College facilities including: music rooms (with pianos), kitchenettes, common rooms, Morrison Hall, University College Quad, Commuter Student Centre, dining hall, Reznikoff s Cafe. Will I have access to a computer? Should I bring a laptop? Is the Campus wireless? Students will have access to the library and computers on campus. A laptop is not required but the campus is wireless and students will have access to the internet at their residence building. Are there accommodations for disabled students? There are limited accommodations for students with physical disabilities. Is there an ATM on campus? Yes there are many ATM s on campus as well as a few major banks within easy walking distance. Will I be sharing a room/washroom? All of the rooms in the Morrison Hall are singles. The washroom facilities are shared. Showers are not communal they are individual shower stalls with an outer door, changing space and shower area. Is there a curfew in the residence? There will be a curfew established by our supervisors in coordination with the residence staff. How much supervision is provided after classes? Live-in resident advisors provide round-the-clock supervision. Scheduled group activities will also take place in the evenings after dinner and on weekends. Are there vegetarian and vegan meal options? Are there kosher or halal options? Yes, students can indicate on their application any dietary preferences so accommodations can be made if necessary. All ingredients to each dish are posted and there is a vegetarian option for all meals. Some halal options are available if requested. The kitchen is not kosher but we can arrange to order meals from a kosher kitchen facility nearby if needed. Are there telephones in the rooms? Yes. A long-distance calling card is required for international calls. Will there be sheets, towels, pillows, and toilet paper supplied? Sheets, pillows and toilet paper are all supplied. However, we ask guests to bring their own towels. Will there be someone to meet us at the airport? Yes, one of the three live-in supervisors will be on hand to meet students at the airport. outshine 2014 page 7

I learned that being a leader doesn t mean I have to be assertive and convince everyone I m right. [It s] about creating open space where we can share and build on ideas. Participant I found the idea that you don t evaluate problems you instead consider multiple options to be my most significant learning from the two weeks. I love to debate with my friends at school, but I now realise that I almost always entrench in my position putting yourself in the shoes of the other side and actually seeing what the good is in their ideas is powerful. Participant I used to think that wherever I was living, I should just accept it and I never once thought that I could change my community.
