14 Absence Policy Non-Prep Year Students by the end of semester (end of January/beginning of February) you must have at least 1 completed subject (with a grade better than 1 fail ) in case you do not, an official letter will be sent out calling you before a committee to explain your absence from classes if you do not respond to this, we will respond to our legal obligation to forward your case to the Immigration Office (BÁH)
15 Prep Year Students A. if you do not respond to this, we will respond to our legal obligation to forward your case to the Immigration Office (BÁH) B. if you miss more than 25% of your classes (= 25 times 90 minute slots in your timetable), you will not get a grade and have no credits if you miss your classes for 2 weeks in a row, an official letter will be sent out calling you before a committee to explain your absence from classes if you have no credits, you will have passive student status in Spring semester This means having no active student status. You will not be able to show a certificate of active student status before the Immigration Office (BÁH).

18 Services of the Department of International Affairs to serve all incoming and currently enrolled international students to give information on application, finances and enrolment to prospective students to handle new applications and register student to advise applicants about visa issues and immigration-related services and connect you with the local authorities to help you find the type of housing that best suits your needs to keep the international student community up-to-speed by sending out circulars, notifications and updated information related to deadlines in cooperation with the International Study Center to participate organizing social programs and cultural excursions in order to create a closely knit international student community to liaise with educational consultancy agencies in order to increase the number of incoming students

21 Office of Immigration and Nationality (BÁH) If you are a student from the European Economic Area (EEA: member states of the EU and Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, and Lichtenstein), you are required to obtain a registration card. If you are a student from the non-european Economic Area (EEA), you are required to obtain a residence permit, and after your arrival in Hungary you need to register your accommodation. After you arrive in Budapest, you can arrange your registration card (EEA) or residence permit (non-eea) at the Office of Immigration and Natoinality (in Hungarian: Bevándorlási és Állampolgársági Hivatal, abbreviated as BÁH).

24 Getting your residence permit The following documents are required from all third country nationals: your valid passport; 1 passport photo (without glasses or hat); wholly and legibly completed, signed application form certificate of full health insurance (which covers daily hospital charges); tenancy agreement of your rented apartment OR a certificate about your accommodation in a dormitory - issued by the dormitory OR any other legal documents from your landlord / housing provider; certificate about your financial assets for the period of your stay in Hungary by a recent bank account statement OR certificate of your scholarship or any other resources OR any other legal documents; administrative service fee of 18,000 HUF (only if you did not pay 60 EUR yet in your home country) student registration certificate Hallgatói jogviszony-igazolás in Hungarian from the Department of International Affairs.

28 Start getting your Student ID processed Registration Office (Okmányiroda) You have to go to an Office of Government Issued Documents. In Hungarian we call it Okmányiroda; here is a list about where you can find one nearby: Nearest address: Baross utca 52. There they will take a photo of you and have your main data registered. You get a form with a unique code on the top right corner called NEK identifier. (Just tell them you would like to apply for a student card - diákigazolvány in Hungarian - and they will help.

31 Student ID card 1) Register at the Registration Office (Okmányiroda, see previous slides) and request the processing of a Student ID card (in Hungarian: diákigazolvány-igénylés) 2) Get your Certificate of Student Status from DIA (collect this document 2-3 days after your registration in the Neptun system). This certificate is issued for you at the Faculty. 3) Proceed to the Quaestura Office. 4) Start getting your Student ID card processed. 5) Leave with your temporary student card and wait for further notification from Quaestura Office. 6) You will have to re-validate your Student ID card at beginning of each academic year.
32 How to use WiFi at ELTE Step 1 Connect to the network called ELTE-Guest Step 2 Open a this page in the browser: Step 3 Click on Belépés below (belépés means login ) Now you can switch the language of the website into English. Step 4 Select authentication via Neptun by clicking on the Neptun icon in the top right corner, then type your Neptun ID (6 characters), your password, then log in. Step 5 Now you can choose your own IIG username (which is Választott IIG Azonosító ). Note that the number of the characters in your username have to be between 3 and 12 and it can only contain lower case letters of the English alphabet, numbers and hyphens (-). Note that it cannot start with a hyphen or a number and it cannot contain space, dot (.), low line (_) or two hyphens following each other.
33 Step 6 Choose your password and type it to Választott IIG Jelszó (chosen IIG password) and the same password to Választott IIG Jelszó Megerősítés (validating your chosen IIG password). Your password should be at least 6 characters long, but it cannot be your username. Step 7 At the bottom of the page there is a sentence Kérem a WIFI azonosító létrehozását is (which means: I also would like to create a WIFI identifier ) and a box beside this sentence. Put a tick into the box and then click on Igénylés (application). You will be redirected to a page where the system confirms your request. Then you are done, your IIG identifier is ready. Step 8 Disconnect from the network ELTE-Guest and try to connect to ELTE when your IIG username and password will be requested. After you type them in, you have access to the internet. 34 Student status: active vs. passive It is important that you clarify your student status during the registration period of each academic year. If you are staying in Hungary as a student admitted by the Faculty of Humanities of ELTE, it is compulsory for you to keep DIA informed about your desired status. In case you need to leave Hungary temporarily (due to a medical emergency in your home country), it is your duty to inform us about your departure. It is strictly forbidden to have an active status while you do not attend any of your classes. Students who are active and do not attend classes will be reported to the concerned authorities.

39 Traveling in Budapest Buy a monthly student pass for your local transport. You are only eligible to make use of the discount if you have your temporary or permanent student card. a single ticket: 350,- HUF a Budapest 24-hour travel card (1.650,-HUF) a 7-day travel card (4.950,- HUF) a 14-day pass (6.300,- HUF), a monthly Budapest pass (9.500,- HUF). The monthly pass allows you to travel day and night on any vehicles run by BKK in the inner city and its suburbs
40 Controllers! Always travel with a valid ticket You must have a ticket or a valid pass before boarding the vehicles. The tickets should be validated by the punchers before starting your trip on the Metro lines, or right after embarking other means of transport. BKK officials are authorized to check the validity of your ticket or pass any time during or after your trip. Passengers without valid ticket or pass are to pay a heavy fine ,- HUF (approx. 55 EUR) if paid by check.
41 Budapest by taxi All taxis in Budapest are painted yellow. Flat rate: HUF 450. Mileage rates do not vary from company to company. Avoid being cheated! Always ask for a receipt at the end of your journey and remember the plate number. Ordering a taxi by phone is always safer and more reliable than hailing a taxi on the road or getting into one on the taxi deck (especially near train and bus stations the airport being an exception). Do not get into a taxi near Deák Ferenc tér, Blaha Lujza tér, in front of Astoria (Burger King, McDonalds), all railway stations. You will be heavily overcharged in the majority of cases.
